Mike Trout Suffers Minor Calf Strain

By Mark Polishuk | July 15, 2019 at 10:22pm CDT

MONDAY: An MRI revealed a “small” calf strain, Hoornstra was among those to tweet. Trout’s day-to-day.

SUNDAY, 6:52PM: Trout’s injury isn’t considered to be serious, manager Brad Ausmus told J.P. Hoornstra of the Southern California News Group (Twitter link).  Still, Trout will undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of his calf problem.

5:31PM: Mike Trout left today’s game after two innings due to what the Angels described as right calf tightness, and the star outfielder’s condition is day-to-day.  The injury seemingly wasn’t caused by any obvious play on the field — Trout softly lined to first base in his only at-bat of the game, and he didn’t make any defensive plays during his two innings of work.  Trout was replaced in center field prior to the beginning of the third inning.

While the removal could have simply been precautionary in nature, any type of injury to baseball’s best player is certainly worth noting.  Trout is in the midst of yet another incredible season, with 30 homers and a .305/.455/.666 slash line over 402 plate appearances.  He leads the league in any number of categories, including wRC+ (191), fWAR (6.5), offensive bWAR (5.9), on-base percentage, runs created, and walks.  (In fact, Trout’s 77 walks top his 70 strikeouts.)

Los Angeles entered today’s action with a 47-46 record, five games behind Oakland for the final American League wild card slot.  Needless to say, the Angels’ playoff chances would take a big hit should Trout have to go on the injured list for any lengthy amount of time.  He is such a singular driving force in his team’s success that, if the worst-case scenario occurs and Trout does indeed need a significant IL stint, his absence could convince the Angels front office to explore selling veterans at the trade deadline.

No one is saying the Angels can’t win. Just a warning to heed…

Hear the Rime of the Seattle Mariners.

It’s hard to make the playoffs. Ask them to tell their tale.

But, even they escaped the curse of an albatross contract in Cano.

But ya. Our fans are silly. Except…I’m guessing Pittsburgh here, but…when was the last time the bucs were in the playoffs? 2013? And before that? 92…? Yeah keep trolling Trouts wasted years.

I’d take wasted Trout for his career. And you know…12 more seasons. Totally won’t win.

They haven’t contended for 4 years now, and they have a crappy minor league system.

That’s a bad sign. That’s a team that can’t accept it was time to rebuild and will try to plug holes with overpriced free agents and the ditch will only get deeper.

The fact is, the last 4 years they have lost all but one of their starting pitchers due to injuries, and the one that wasn’t hurt was the worst of the 20.

Because they tanked in September. In late Aug they were the second wild card team.

How are the Phillies doing? Are you ripping the Phillies. The Angels have a better record. How are the Cardinals doing? Are you ripping the Cardinals. How about the Padres? The Angels have a better record than all three.

The Angels are not good enough to have 19 out of their starting pitchers go on the DL over the last 4 years. Few teams are. They’ll be in contention when they get that when they only lose two starters. But if they lose five again, like they have each of the last three years, they wont be.

They need pitching badly. They have a half dozen hitters having career years and they are still a .500 team. They need to sign a couple starters in the off season. Ryu and Cole are probably the best two options, but there’s also Hamels, Bumgarner, Miley, Odorizzi, Wheeler… Sign two of those and find one in a trade and they would have a great start for next year. They need to get serious because Trout and Ohtani aren’t getting any younger.

Don’t forget Ohtani will pitch next year too. Definitely need pitching, in the worst way. I say Cole (local big, went to Orange Lutheran, about 5 miles from the Big A, and IIRC Angels radio voice and former SP Mark Langston coached there..?) and one mid-range starter
with Ohtani and Heaney and Canning…

Would definitely be improved. I like the youth and depth offensively, outside of 1b. Trout, La Stella, Fletcher, Simmons, Thaiss, Calhoun, and heck even Upton with Adell waiting in the wings…? Things are trending up.

No dummy, that’s a collection of stiffs having better than normal years in the year of the juiced ball, WHAT A SCHOCK!

The angels have Trout, Simmons, adell and Ohtani.

Outside of that they are probably the least talented organization in MLB from top to bottom.

That describes literally none of the players mentioned (too early to tell on La Stella)
          Calhoun: return to form year after two down years.Slight HR uptick but mostly playing like he’s played before. Comparable rate stats;
Upton: Injured most of the season. Rate stats under career norms
Thaiss: 5 games, 19 PA in the majors. Rookie. \o “normal years” to compare to.
Fletcher: 2nd season in majors. Improvements thoroughly uncontroversial/unsurprising for a 25 year old.

          Buncha stiffs, I tells ya.

“The angels have Trout, Simmons, adell and Ohtani.”

Buncha other players too. They’re this whole baseball team.

“Outside of that they are probably the least talented organization in MLB from top to bottom.”

Remove him and what is it ranked?

Remove trout, Ohtani and Simmons and they might as well be the Orioles.

They can’t see they should of rebuilt, and will try buying free agents to make it work.

You’re just wrong Boog. Fletcher has proven consistent on offense and defense in his short MLB career, but it’s a large enough sample size. Calhoun has been a consistent solid defender that has saved countless runs by taking to the air, like he did yesterday. And his power is better than ever. LaStella, look at the numbers. They are probably one of the most talented group of guys in baseball with a top notch farm system. The Angels have scored 3 more runs than the first place Astros this season. Their problem is they’ve given up too many which tells me they need pitching.

I could keep going down the roster, but you should do your own research. The only weak spots I see aside from pitching are Bour who has options, Cozart who is done, and Upton.

My guess is you don’t watch the Angels and you come on here to stir the pot like you used to do on the Angels site threads.

The Angels have a half dozen players having career years? Huh?
HUH? Exactly who are these six players. Are you including rookies and first full year player.

Tommy LaStella is having his best year and his WAR will end up below 2. Is he one of your six?

Your take is laughable. The Angels starters need to stay heathy, but even that is now impossible because Tyler Skaggs is not getting resurrected and he was a big part of the 2020 plans.

The lack of Iron Maiden knowledge in here is offensive.
