Luke Voit To Undergo MRI On Core Muscle Injury

By Connor Byrne | July 30, 2019 at 9:48pm CDT

Yankees first baseman Luke Voit departed the team’s game Tuesday with a core muscle injury, the club announced (via Bryan Hoch of MLB.com). Voit will undergo an MRI.

Voit already went to the injured list with an abdominal strain earlier this month, though he returned after missing the minimum amount of time. The 28-year-old’s offensive production has dipped somewhat since he came back, but not to an alarming extent. Voit has slashed .278/.392/.493 (135 wRC+) with 19 home runs in 416 plate appearances this year, giving the Yankees their most productive full-time first base option since a brief Mark Teixeira resurgence in 2015.

New York replaced Voit on Tuesday with Gio Urshela, but he doesn’t figure to line up at first regularly if the former’s forced to head back to the IL. Urshela, after all, has unexpectedly emerged as a valuable third base regular for the Yankees. Meanwhile, the club has designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion and infielder DJ LeMahieu on hand as more logical first base possibilities. Those two and Mike Ford, who’s currently in the minors, handled the position during Voit’s brief absence a few weeks ago.

How utterly typical. All the other contenders making trades to improve themselves before the deadline but the news from the Yankees is about ANOTHER injury. We’ll lose in the ALDS because we don’t have the balls to make a single move. There’s not ONE starter in this rotation I’d feel comfortable in by handing the ball to in the post season… if we even make it. Truly sad.

This stuff should have been fixed in the off season for nothing more then cash MONEY! Over the years I learned anytime I get a notifacation on my phone about who the Yankees are interested in I just swipe it up and never look back , read it or anything.

I know for the past too they it would always ALWAYS come to the last day for them to do NOTHING and just give out some lame excuse on how these guys we have right now will come around.

I have not watched one Yankee game this entire season and I plan on watching not one post season game. They are not build for a world series and have SP problems. And on top of all the bringing back Brett Garbage had left a really really bad taste in my mouth.

Your best bet is hope they lose and lose real bad cuz maybe the’ll actually do something.

Don’t fall for their smoke and mirrors this teams finished SP wise before the seaosn started

I’ve seen some of your arguments before and thats great you chose to boycott. yes the sons do take in more $$ than George did. G would reinvest whatever it took. But that strategy also only goes so far. Percentage wise, the son’s are not reinvesting the same amount. But thats also business. Perhaps their perspective is to not want to give free money to teams that really don’t try to win. The Lux tax does not increase enough per the yanks revenue. It increases based on the mlb as a whole. This season has been great baseball not just HR and SO yankees. You are missing out.

Actually I think the Yankees Mgt is smart as a stros fan we say the same thing every trade DL. But seeing as My Astros and your Yankees and the dodgers are nearly tied with best record I think speaks for itself. The way I see it during post season it is whom gets hot at that time as when you compare the big three the differences are not much at all.

One difference though is your game one and two starters…. and if we get through you it’s the dodgers entire rotation (and their back end goes to fortify their iffy pen).

Of the 3 the yanks currently have the bronze medal odds

Dodgers rotation is superior but when Yanks get Betances back (IF), then they clearly have the best bullpen in baseball with Green, Kahnle, Betances, Ottavino, Britton, and Chapman.

The reason for not making that single move is the new philosophy of Hal Steinbrenner. He just wants the team to be competitive instead of reeling off WS appearances and victories. He is the master of cheapness the direct opposite of George Steinbrenner.

People always forget that King George’s “money fixes everything” philosophy only really worked right after he bought the team, because the league hadn’t caught up yet. They won the pennant in ’76 and the Series in ’77 and ’78. They were lousy (4th in the division) in ’79, won the division in ’80, and got hot and won the pennant in ’81 despite finishing 5th in the second half.

        After that:

        ’82: 79-83, 5th in division
        ’83: 88-74, 3rd in division
        ’84: 87-75, 3rd in division
        ’85: 97-64, 2nd in division
        ’86: 90-72, 2nd in division
        ’87: 89-73, 4th in division
        ’88: 83-78, 5th in division
        ’89: 71-90, 5th in division
        ’90: 65-97, 7th (last) in division

He was suspended in 1990, and people who actually knew what they were doing (Gene Michael, Bob Watson) ran the team and built the dynasty of the ’90s. When George returned from the suspension he nearly as involved in personnel decisions, so they kept winning. But he was still willing to spend money, so it was the perfect arrangement.

Hal clearly is willing to spend money, he’s just not as willing (Jacoby Ellsbury aside) as his father or even his brother Hank to spend it stupidly and/or in a reactionary way. His style is far more suited to sustained winning than his father’s was. I mean, it’s great to spend insane amounts of money because you want to win, but when you’re finishing where George’s teams did throughout the ’80s it obviously wasn’t doing any good.

Hopefully DJ can come back tomorrow. Worst case scenario Encarnacion can play 1B until Voit gets back. Definitely don’t go and make a panic move for a 1B because of something like this. Need 1 SP tomorrow. Hopefully Bumgarner. If not then go after Wheeler, Ray, Minor, or Thor. I doubt the Mets are motivated to trade Thor now that they got Stroman. Wheeler is definitely getting moved tomorrow tho. In a perfect world Yankees get Greinke tomorrow. Play for them instead of against them. Have money coming off the books next year with CC retiring, Chapman (who will probably opt out after this season and be a free agent), and Betances who will be a free agent after this year. Would love to have Greinke in the rotation for a couple of years.

Im so tired of my fellow Yankee “fans” that have memories that last all of 1 week.

@louiebeans and @keena Quit your yapping about the Yanks always being quiet during the deadline. Last July the Yanks traded for Happ (went 7-0 in 11 starts), Voit (hit 14 homers with an OPS of 1.095), Britton (who had a 2.88 ERA in 25 appearances), Lance Lynn (ERA of 4.14 in 11 starts) and then by the August 31st deadline acquired Andrew McCutchen
(.892 OPS in 114 pa) and Hechavvaria who played some great defense. How in the world is that being quiet?

And stop the bull about the Steinbrenner’s being cheap. Cashman has done agreat Nov of building this team with enough depth via trades that a team with about 20 players on the IL this year still have a sizable lead.

Spent so far: $124.555 million (Adam Ottavino, DJ LeMahieu, Zach Britton, Troy Tulowitzki, J.A. Happ).

Yanks spent the 2nd most in annual salary for 2019 in free agency and all have been himeruns with exception of Happ and Tulo which basically was a minimum salary longshot expense that hurt no one.

I personally wanted Harper/ Brantley/Markakis but he decided to pass and brought back Gardner to place hold Frazier. Frazier looked great with the bat (.283/.330/.515 w/ 11 hrs) but suddenly showed an inability to catch the ball although he had always been very competent in the field before.

Most all of us wanted Corbin but felt he wasn’t worth the 6/$140 he received nor wanted to part with the young players being demanded for Kluber, Carassco or Bauer. But whos to say Corbin would have the same great numbers playing in NY. See Sonny Gray. Maybe Cashman had questions regarding Kluber’s and Carrasco’s health. Both have combined for a whopping 100 innings thus far. Cashman isn’t the greatest GM but he’s definitely proven to be top 5 because the core of this team were either homegrown or acquired using prospects that he felt comfortable parting with. Hicks for JR Murphy. Didi for Shane Green. Voit for Gallegos. Relax. Chad Green for Justin Wilson.

How are they cheap when they traded for the most expensive contract in history prior to the Harper, Machado and Trout deals? This version of the Yanks are ran MUCH better than those of the papa Steinbrenner’s. Back then we traded all our top prosoects for deteriorating vets past their primes. Handed out long term contracts that seldom paid off. You can always criticize but do with things like, hmmmm, facts and logic being used.

you do not understand how to grade Cash. So i will repeat what i typed the other day- since its actual statistical fact and not subjective. I am not critiquing Cash’s handling of the bats. he has been shrewd and won more than he’s lost.

You think MLB is fair and equitable like the NFL or NHL. So there is no margin to grade GMs on other than W/L.

In your fantasy land world, Cash is graded against the marlins and Baltimore of the league. Ergo he is so awesome.

so lets quote Forbes “The New York Yankees are the most valuable team ($4.6 billion) and had local revenue of $712 million last year, the most in MLB and more than the bottom six teams (Miami Marlins, Tampa Bay Rays, Oakland Athletics, Kansas City Royals, Cincinnati Reds and Baltimore Orioles) had combined. The Dodgers ($3.3 billion), Boston Red Sox ($3.2 billion), Chicago Cubs ($3.1 billion) and San Francisco Giants ($3 billion) round out the list of teams worth at least $3 billion.”

I’ll help you with math for a second. The Yankees have about 40% more value – 1.3 Billion in dollars more than #2 and the revenue to match.

with that he has the best paid front office, an army of the top scouts, analytics guys and tech geniuses analyzing every aspect of the game. he has spent more on payroll in the last 15 years than anyone. so no, they are not cheap with only adds salt to the Cash is the greatest of all time argument.

Yet somehow since 2004, The Red Sox have won 4 WS, the Cubs broke a 100 year old drought just 3 WS ago, and the Giants have won 3. That’s 8 world series for the high revenue teams in the last 15 years plus the 2-3 the dodgers have been to. The Royals have 2 WS appearances, Tampa/Mets/Colorado one each. Detroit and St Louis also have been to several.

Yup- Cash has done a great job dregging up Tauchman, Urshela, and Maybin. However, you will excuse though for not caring as i watch Boston celebrate.

So I say, and the facts back it that graded against a real curve he has under performed and specifically in the Pitching area and that has cost us dearly.

Honestly- after 18 years of falling short 17 times while the rivals have won 4 its just time for a change. I like the way the GMs in Cleveland and Tampa conduct themselves.

That they let him do those ridiculous work outs is just that… ridiculous! He is getting paid to play baseball not compete in strong man competition. His injuries are a direct result of that. It is one thing to stay in shape, it is a completely different thing to do hard core training when you have a 8 month long season ( spring training and postseason) !

core muscles have nothing to do with weight lifting.

thank god Dr flipistheflop was here to offer his expert opinion on the definite cause of this injury. It absolutely must have been related to weight training and couldnt possibly have been from any baseball related activities…….wow.

That’s OK. Voit will still make his WWE debut against Stone Cold this winter.

Not Dr just observant. His crazy workouts are not necessary To baseball is the point. Wear and tear and overuse is a real thing if you were even slightly intelligent you would understand that.

That’s way too much for the Yankees to give up and Smith isn’t needed. EE/DJ can play some first base while Voit is out so let’s not write off the position.

That rather seems fair, but Yankees fans are gonna crap all over it. You’ve got to understand their prospects are the greatest in the world, until they’re in someone else’s system, than their worthless.

it’s not about overvaluing prospects. btw, that’s what industry ppl are saying about Garcia, not just Cashman. But why trade him for an rental guy just off the IL and an unneeded 1b?

And I stand by what I said. It’s the GMs job to put together a collection of talent and I’ts UO to the talent to do their jobs. In the last 5 years Cash has done an amazing job with the farm and with the mlb team. Do I place blame on him for the failures of Sony Gray or Happ this year? Hell no. You can’t predict how a player is going to handle NY. Both pitchers were good when acquired mid season. They, for some reason, didn’t perform well the next full season. That’s not on him that’s the player. But huge amounts of cash were not the train why this team is where they are the last 3 years. Honestly, winning a title is the ultimate goal but I understand that Cash isn’t pitching, catching or hitting. But the teams ate good enough to win a world series. Is the Red Sox GM a genius because Eovaldi went into a hot streak? Then is he a genius for giving him that absurd contract?

Who knows how this year will end but what I do know is that we’ve had just about every player on the IL and have been without Andujar, Betances and Stanton for about the entire season and Hicks, Aaron and Didi for significant times this year and we still have the best record in the AL East and for a while, the mlb. Pitchers are finicky. We’ve been unlucky. But you can’t predict a pitcher’s adjustment to NY. The last 5 years he’s been a top GM and im okaaay if you disagree.
