The Rays are working the phones on multiple fronts, with the evident aim of adding pitching as well as a bat. In that latter pursuit, the team has engaged the padres regarding corner outfielders Hunter Renfroe and Franmil Reyes, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times (Twitter link).
It’s not surprising to see those particular names pop up, if only because of the prior rumored Tampa Bay targets. The club has been tied to numerous powerful right-handed hitters, most of whom would represent full or part-time options in the corner outfield. It seems that’s a particular profile of interest.
What’s particularly interesting about this slugging San Diego duo is that it consists of a pair of young and controllable players. That’d presumably increase the price tag, though perhaps there’s also some logic in the Rays going after pieces with long-term as well as short-term value.
There’s obviously a tough balance to be struck here by the Tampa Bay front office. Even as hopes of a division run have melted away, the club has made clear that it wishes to “do everything we can not to take this season for granted and see if there is a way to help this team in a responsible fashion.”
Renfroe and Reyes each possess an abundance of power. They’ve also both put it into play in game action at the MLB level this year. The former has a .238/.297/.563 slash and 29 dingers, the latter a .253/.312/.535 mark and 27 long balls. Both of those lines translate to a 116 wRC+ and suggest equal parts intrigue and concern as to sustainability.
The sluggers each have a little more swing and miss, and a little less plate discipline, than might be preferred. Barring an adjustment, their fortunes will rise and fall on their ability to square up the baseball consistently. That sort of high-power, low-OBP profile hasn’t been favored in recent years, though perhaps that could create a bit of an opportunity for the Rays.
It remains to be seen how aggressively the Padres will market their corner sluggers. While the club has yet to resolve its general outfield crunch, it’s not as if the organization is desperate to clear a path for a can’t-miss prospect.

Not sure I want to lose either Renfroe for Franimal. Rather trade Margot. I think Reyes would be a great DH though

Who is the CF if they trade Margot?

Who is the CF if they don’t trade Margot? The fact that it’s a legitimate question gives credence to considering moving him. Perhaps his value is higher now than it will ever be.

Jank
petcopadre
All defense-no offense.-good base stealer He’s a good back up but not a starter.
jbigz12
You talking about Jankowski or Margot? because the description fits both. Margot’s .281 XWOBA tells me he’s a deserving 4th outfielder or a 2nd division ML starter.
petcopadre
I was actually speaking about Jank. Margot has more potential and a higher ceiling IMO. Jank has been around for a while and appears to have hit his offensive ceiling.
mrpadre19
Myers/Jankowski
Unless they work another deal involving Yates for a CF….like with Atl for Inciarte.
or one of their AA prospects Pache/Waters.
Koamalu
Myers would probably be handed the job like was earlier this season when Margot was struggling. Jankowski can handle CF on defense with the best of them. He has no power but can hit for similar BA and OBP as Margot. Why would there be a problem replacing Margot if the return was good enough?
truthlemonade
If they trade Margot, I guess Myers becomes the CF. Jankowski will also be back soon. Myers has been coming around with the bat lately. Also, Renfroe has been making some appearances in CF. Neither is a great solution. They might just deal with the bad defense, or upgrade over the offseason.
I am optimistic that Myers will snap out of it.
Socrates Curveball
Padres shopping Franmil due to defensive deficiencies? Makes some sense. But he’s a 23 Yr old Power hitter driving the ball out of Petco Park. Maybe a little patience would serve the Padres well. And I find it hard to believe they’d part with Renfroe. It’s time for the Pads to start consolidating not adding more prospects.
Koamalu
I can’t think of any reason the Padres would not move Reyes as part of a deal for a Top of the Rotation starter. They have other outfield options including Myers who is untradeable and the Padres have to find a place for him to play. What they don’t have is a horse that will lead the staff. Lots of talented young pitchers. Just not a single one that can go 6-8 innings every 5th day.
Show Me Your Tatis
You have spent the last few months trashing Green for playing Myers in CF and now you mention him as an option there if Margot is traded?
I like Jankowski but he’s a bit on the injury prone side.
mlbfan1978
Renfroe not in today’s lineup.
99socalfrc
He’s been slumping a bit lately, with Myers hitting a little better it’s probably on OK time for a day off regardless.
DarkSide830
i wouldnt move Franmil unless the return is very good. defensive woes aside, he hits well enough for those deficiencies to be somewhat manageable. a team like the White Sox could have enough needs in OF/DH going forward to provide a good package, but Franmil strikes me as a guy valued more by his team then by others.
lowtalker1
No he doesn’t. Because of his build his defense is hinder. If he plays the field, that basically makes him a replacement level player.
420ambassador
best thing preller can do now is nothing.. likely not going to find as good of a rotation arm or for as cheap as the mets got stroman. can’t imagine a scenario in which moving a position player is beneficial at the moment either
Show Me Your Tatis
I’d trade Stammen (take what they can get) but beyond that staying put probably works best for now unless someone gets desperate for a closer and overpays for Yates.
truthlemonade
I saw a proposal on frangraphs:
Padres trade Wil Myers and Kirby Yates to Washington for a mid level prospect.
The Padres get salary relief, and Washington gets an elite closer, and they might be optimistic that Myers can snap out of it and replace Zimmerman at 1b for next year.
Show Me Your Tatis
I’d do that. Nats wouldn’t.
lowtalker1
reyes to the rays? that makes the most sense.
petcopadre
Reyes hits for average,, not a great average but higher than Renfroe. Renfore is clearly better in the field than Renfroe.. It’s a wash. Keep them both.

^ Have the Padres traded Wil Myers for Trevor Bauer or Noah Syndergaard yet? Or traded for JT Realmuto and then flipped him later on for a better return than they gave up?
hotcorner
Renfroe keeps improving and should definitely be kept for the long haul. He is also overshadowing on both offense and defense our $20 million dollar players like Myers and Hosmer. The fans love him. Reyes has value and should be only sent for an important piece the Padres need. He is an American Leaguer for certain.
User 1104686089
Rays should come get Hunter Pence, its been fun to watch him here in Texas and I want to see him get another playoff shot.
damascusj
He can only DH tho, renfroe or Reyes are better in every aspect
User 1104686089
Nope he still plays the corners, he has just hit so well we have had to DH him a ton to get his bat into the lineup. He actually made the team as the 4th OF. Hunter is a good hitter and wouldn’t cost as much as those guys, you could do a lot worse

Renfroe has improved his defense big time this year, his plate discipline seems to get better and then regress again. Reyes looks like he could end up being a decent all around hitter as he uses all fields better than Renfroe. Tough decision they both still seem to be improving. Clearing a spot for Naylor would be nice, he can probably be a better hitter than both of these and adds a left handed bat, his defense offers it’s own issues, Reyes and Naylor in the same outfield daily is defensively challenging.
Show Me Your Tatis
Naylor is an outfielder like Miguel Andujar is a 3rd baseman.
Moonlight Graham
Franmil just turned 24, while Renfroe is 27. Renfroe might still have some upside, but I could see Franmil continue developing into one of the most devastating sluggers in the league… I’m speaking as a Giants fan contemplating which one would present a bigger problem for my team moving forward.
Giantsfan775
I agree with your assessment. With that said, I would not mind being trading partners with the Padres for one of their outfielders. Cordero would be a nice pick-up, probably cheaper given the recent injuries.
jeffmaz
I don’t know, how many teams have 2 guys hitting 40+ HRs with TatisJr who will hit 30 this year and maybe 40 if he wasn’t injured? OBP can be improved, as well as fielding for Reyes.
damascusj
Don’t forget Machado too, Padres could legitimately have 4 30/40+ HR guys
petcopadre
Which Tampa Bay Ray would help us out the most or are we giving away an outfielder for more prospects. I believe we need an immediate impact player.
musha203
Well you won’t get pitching if any consequence out of the Rays and the only position they can afford to give up right now is middle infield so unless they are gonna take that it will be most likely a prospect package
Koamalu

Koamalu
Instead of Weathers? I think many in the baseball community would agree.

As fun as it is to watch both players on the Padres.. they really need to trade 1 of them because they are too similar. Renfroe has stepped up defensively and would be better suited on the Padres where as Reyes could use some DH days.
mhdunbar99
Renfro should be the Padres RF for a decade. His power is top 10 in the league. Plus, he hits excellent in clutch, pressure situations. His plate discipline is improving and his defense is vastly better compared to recent history. Andy Green just needs to play him and leave him alone!
petersdylan36
Fun fact… over his last 162 games, Renfroe has hit 50 homers… I say we trade Reyes
petcopadre
Reyes Offensive stats
2019 :ABs-316 career AB’s -577
2019 Hits-80 career 153
Renfroe Offensive stats
2019 AB’s 320 Career AB’s 1203
2019 Hits- 76 Career Hits 292
Food for thought. It appears Reyes has a higher ceiling offensively. I’m not suggesting we should trade Renfroe but rather it would make sense to keep both of them.
Koamalu
Offense is only half of the game. Renfroe is one of the best corner OF in baseball. Reyes is one of the worst. If they are roughly even on offense, then Renfroe is the better player.
truthlemonade
Renfroe is already tied for tenth all time on the Padres HR leaderboard with 85.
petcopadre
He’s only 140 hits above Reyes and has 626 more at bats. Home runs are impressive but….
Show Me Your Tatis
Reyes = DH
genre99
Trade Reyes, he’s a defensive liability. And he’s got slump and injury written all over him.
He’s not an NL player; trade him while there’s interest.

Won’t Olivares be in the Padres starting OF next year?
Is he an option in CF if Margot doesn’t pan out there?
mrpadre19
Maybe next year if pressed into duty…more likely 2021 if he continues to improve.
bradthebluefish
Rays bring back Wil Myers?
Koamalu
Not with Myers salary.
towinagain
Stay the course! Don’t trade either one. Pads will get screwed in a trade!!!
hoosierhysteria
Myers go back! Wishful thinking. What does TB have that PADRES need? No mention of that. No prospects…we have plenty.
musha203
The only place on the major league side they are dealing from is middle infield so short of that it would have to be a prospect package of some sort or a guy in triple A the padres feels is ready
