Blue Jays Release David Paulino

By Jeff Todd | August 12, 2019 at 7:58pm CDT

The Blue Jays announced that righty David Paulino has cleared release waivers, making him a free agent. He had been designated for assignment recently.

Once a major prospect, the 25-year-old hurler has not developed as hoped. There have been quite a few hiccups along the way, most notably arm injuries and a PED suspension.

Paulino now seems likelier to end up in a big-league relief unit, but he had been functioning as a starter this year at Triple-A. In seven outings this season, he worked to a 3.45 ERA with 8.5 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9 over 28 2/3 innings.

Unfortunately, Paulino has missed the bulk of the campaign with an as-yet-unreported health issue. While no organization was willing to utilize a 40-man spot to add him — notably, he won’t be optionable in 2020 — it stands to reason that one will be glad to take a chance on a minors deal.

I’m assuming they think he’ll never be healthy again or they aren’t willing to find out.

Maybe they don’t like he’s a PED user.

He’s shown a significant amount of talent in the minors. Would be shocked if he doesn’t pretty much immediately find another team willing to take a chance on him. He’s still only 25 years old! I do have one question though — how is it that all of his minor league options are already used up? Seems early for that… no?

Kept going up and down between minors and majors from 2016 to 2018…..

He’s optionable this year only. Which further limits his appeal. He’s certainly not done playing professional baseball but his stock is real low. I’m not sure how bad his injury was either. That could be another consideration. To go along w the PED use and makeup concern

He hasn’t pitched much for a nearly 26 year old former starting pitcher. Someone will take a flier on him but post PED use he hasn’t shown a tremendous amount. I’d say there’s a good amount of durability concern there as well. There’s some hope for a useful reliever that relies on the fastball/curve combo but his ceiling has dropped significantly. More of an old top prospect name at this point than anything else.

As the giants continue to stock pile cast off talent I can see him signed this week and sent to Sacramento

Reports are that he has huge character issues. He had a fight with Giles in preseason because he refused to join in mandatory PFP drills.

Buyer beware. If Ken Giles has to be the guy to put a guy in his place there are some serious issues.

Decent arm. I wonder if Houston knew they were giving up someone with character issues. The Jays don’t scout the minors very well, not as nearly as well as amateur scouting,

Had to be bad enough to get rid of a guy pitching better than most guys in AAA, when healthy. Blue Jays used to be an organization capable of handling bat attitudes, if Paulino’s attitude is the issue here. Too bad. Paulino could have had a real chance with this club.

He hasn’t made double digit starts in 3 years, and really hasn’t been that impressive when he has pitched. He was released because they waived him while he was on IL, they had no choice but to release him. Not out of the question they sign him back, but he’s a major project on and off the field so it’s not a huge issue if he doesn’t.

You didn’t understand anything I said about Paulino and AAA. Then you had to come up with this comment. No choice? There is always a choice. Do not kid yourself.

Last year Paulino looked decent out of the bullpen. He could have converted if he is better suited for short outings. Clearly there were bigger issues at-play than injury. There were plenty of Buffalo arms primed for a pink slip before Paulino.

    I don’t understand this front office….
Our VP leaves yesterday for an NFL team (which is fine to most people especially the media)
Galvis gets moved for nothing like this front office can’t make a decent trade (Sanchez, Donaldson, Stroman etc) but the media spins it like it’s a good move for both sides.
I feel like something is wrong with our front office behind doors. Maybe a disconnect or something.
I fear how the Giles situation plays out. Hopefully they can make a great move soon.
I can see them trading Biggio this offseason and bringing back Galvis lol. Why not! Our front office seems backwards like that…..
I agree that this front office doesn’t seem able to handle anything with players. Look at the track record since they got here. Wasn’t this guy the best prospect in the Osuna trade? Smh

Is this your first year following baseball? Galvis was not traded at the deadline because nothing was offered. Sanchez was traded for little because he literally had the worst pitching peripherals in MLB this year and is coming off of two bad years. What did you expect the return to be? Donaldson was injured the whole year and was on an expiring contract. The Indians took a flyer on him in case he could get healthy. Stroman got the top two pitching prospects in the Mets system. After the Pirates got fleeced in the Archer trade last year, GMs are wary on giving up too much. With that though, Stroman was coming off a terrible year so I don’t know what you expect.

Galvis was not traded because the front office wasn’t willing to grind out an negotiation that involved taking back a contract. Sanchez shouldn’t have been traded because his value was low. Stroman was traded for very little.

This must be your first year following baseball. DMan clearly sees what’s up.

Sanchez trade value was going to go up continuing to struggle this year on a bad team and then costing more salary thru arb next year on an expiring contract?!?! Wow. It’s called logic, try it out some time.

Sanchez was very much a non-tender candidate at seasons end.

Galvis had no interest. Eating a bad contract would’ve been a bad deal for this team. Now they don’t owe him anything the rest of the year.

I don’t agree with everything the FO does but have almost no issue with this year to date.

Letting Galvis go was doing him a huge favour. He was having a great season, but he knew with Bichette coming up his playing time was going to be reduced. Jays let him go and the Red’s grab him for whats left on his contract, and he moves from a team not going to make post season this year or next to a team that maybe a contender this year and next. I wish him good luck.
Sanchez was having a terrible year with the Jays and they were able to trade him and get something in return, he has now won his first two starts with the Astro’s pitching lights out ball. Sometime all that is needed is a change of space.
Everyone knew Stroman was going to be dealt. His attitude was his worse enemy, voicing a negative opinion about the team direction in spring training, arguing with Montoya in the dugout when he got pulled, and commenting on the small market mentality of the management. What Stroman expected was to be traded to one of the top contenting teams, instead he got dealt to the Mets.
Giles was the key piece in the Osuna trade and as much as I liked watching Osuna. I think the trade for Giles and what he’s done its pretty much a straight push.
I think the Jays would have traded Smoak, if there had been an offer, but as good as Smoak has been, he’s a F/A this year and likely won’t be offered another contract with the Jays.

The PED issue is one of the Jays no-no’s. They haven’t kept a player who was suspended for PED. Also when you read the article it mentions being in Buffalo and missing most of the season with an “undisclosed health issue”. Given the PED and the incident with Giles in spring training and health issue, it might just be getting rid of a player with an attitude and feels he’s entitled.

Here’s an interesting question, I have been down on what Shapiro and Atkins have done with the Jays. I truly don’t believe you can win the brass ring without a mix of veteran’s and youth.
That being said these young kids are playing lights out ball. Yes they make some rookie mistakes, things they could get away with in the minors they can’t in the majors (running, throwing) but these are infrequent. They hit and they are fast.
The other night Shapiro said the plan was that once the core team was in place, they would jump into the market for pitching, via trade or F/A.
The question is do you hold off on that until 2021 season wanting to see if what we are seeing right now is a flash in the pan or do they jump in before the 2020 season. They have a couple of potential good starters, that should get better.
