Brewers To Sign Tyler Austin

By Jeff Todd | August 13, 2019 at 8:17am CDT

The Brewers are slated to sign outfielder/first baseman Tyler Austin to a minor-league deal, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post (via Twitter). Austin was cut loose recently by the Giants.

While Austin will have to earn his way up to the MLB roster, he could fill a role in the majors. At the deadline, the club shipped away right-handed-hitting slugger Jesus Aguilar. He’s now raking in Tampa Bay while the Brewers appear to be in need of a righty power bat — if only for pinch-hitting and first-base platoon purposes.

Austin, 27, found himself out of a job in San Francisco after a tepid showing in part-time duties there. Over 147 plate appearances in seventy games, he slashed just .185/.279/.400. But Austin was much better against southpaws, as has been the case for his entire career. Through 556 career plate appearances, he’s carrying a spread of more than two-hundred points between his OPS against right-handed (.647) and left-handed (.865) pitching.

Honestly, the articulation and pure depth and reverence of this comment is almost impossible for the typical mind to comprehend, even high capacity minds like my own can barely comprehend the word play, description and just plain beauty of this opinionated piece of art that this user commented here. May we thank him for his great thinking and for feeling the need to share it with poor souls like us.

Looks like the Grandal at firstbase experiment may be coming to an end. The defense has been bad and his hitting has stalled. I wonder if Gamel will be the odd man out…

I think you’re spot on about Grandal but Gamel isn’t going anywhere, my friend.

Why even put Grandal at first base? He’s one of the best framers in the league.

Austin could be a good pickup for a bench bat/platoon. On the Giants, he flashed excellent power, but he couldn’t hit right handed pitching. He has 20hr power, but he couldn’t pass the Mendoza line in SF. Nevertheless, he’s a power threat, and I hope he can excel with the Brewers.

idc what he does with TB. hope he succeeds. He was terrible for us and we cant wait around for a potential turn around. Brewers gave him all the chances in the world for success

yeah, i don’t blame Milwaukee, he was only an All-Star last year. they always shuffled Thames in there and even Shaw. Counsel overthinking things like usual instead of letting a player get out of a slump.

We dont have time to wait around for players to get out of slumps. you perform you stay you dont you get demoted or traded. its really that simple.

How long have you been waiting for that bullpen to get out of a slump ?

        • johnrealtime

And that mentality is how you end up in the situation you’re at now, in need of a player like the one you just traded away who is currently playing well.

Being patient with a slumping hitter can do them good and that can pay you back when they start to succeed again

But yet very true. Aguilar was begging the team down.He wasnt helping the team and taking up a roster spot because we couldnt send him down for reinforcements. Which indirectly hurt guys who got sent down and didnt deserve it

He’s the same player that came up with the Yankees. Unplayable against righties, yet he keeps getting ran out there against them.

Needs regular ABs. On the Giants he’d start maybe once a week against a lefty to give Belt a day off. Flashed his power and hit a couple of long HRs (including one in Miller Park), but was never a consistent option and we already had Pablo Sandoval as our main pinch hitter off the bench.

This is something i noticed when he was on the Yankees. He isnt good for spot starts. He needs consistent AB’s to become somewhat decent, otherwise he is just gonna be a dud.

Austin turns 28 in a couple of weeks. He’s quickly crisping, and soon will be absolute toast.

I’ll never forget the day he and Aaron Judge hit back to back home runs in their first MLB at bats.
