Braves Considering Signing Adeiny Hechavarria

By Jeff Todd | August 16, 2019 at 1:31pm CDT

The Braves are contemplating a move to sign veteran shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network (via Twitter). Hechavarria evidently cleared release waivers earlier this afternoon.

It’s not surprising that Hechavarria was not claimed. He was earning at a fairly hefty $3MM rate. And his deal included big bonuses ($1MM apiece at 100 and 150 days on the active roster) that were close at hand when he was cut loose by the Mets. A claiming team would’ve stepped into those obligations.

The 30-year-old did not hit much in limited action in New York. Over 151 plate appearances, he carried a .204/.252/.359 slash with five home runs. Hechavarria has yet to finish a season in shouting distance of league-average offensive production and owns a lifetime .252/.288/.346 batting line.

That said, Hechavarria has long been regarded as a high-end infield defender. He’d help the Braves fill in for the injured Dansby Swanson. Though Charlie Culberson and Johan Camargo are both capable of playing shortstop, neither has Hechavarria’s reputation for sterling glovework. Camargo has also endured a brutal season at the plate.

Best thing Braves can do till Swanson comes back. Camargo has been a mess with ZERO confidence and Culberson just isn’t an everyday player. NOW IF ONLY they could find a capable catcher behind Big Mac that can actually run without looking like he has a piano on his back!

Dude, Flo has been horrible, agreed. Camargo needs to go to Gwinnett and get back in the groove…

Completely agree. Johan is a guy who needs consistent ABs.

As for Flo, his passed balls are outweighing any framing advantages he brings.

Who cares how he runs. Care about the fact that every other pitch goes to the back stop with Flowers behind the plate.

Agreed except on Flowers. He is fine as a platoon player and there are much worse options. Unless you want a glove only catcher which are a dime a dozen.

Have you watched Camargo at SS? Have you watched him at the plate?

Yes a bad Camargo hits just as good as Hech. Again, if hes the backup option fine but they better play Charlie over him

Do it. Low cost, he can catch the ball & his hitting is still better than what we’re seeing at shortstop.. Camargo has regressed badly, Culberson is just better as a bench bat, & both are costing baserunners. With hitting not strong after 4th ,and an undependable pen, defensive lapses can’t be tolerated.

With so many Mets being IL the last few years, they should’ve kept Adeiny Hechavarria.

was he one of the people AA acquired while in Toronto? I know he was part of the package that went the other way to Miami, but I’m curious if he was someone AA inherited or got on his own?
