Braves Place Jacob Webb On 60-Day IL

By Connor Byrne | August 19, 2019 at 9:10pm CDT

The Braves recalled right-handed reliever Jacob Webb from Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday and placed him on the 60-day injured list with an elbow impingement, David O’Brien of The Athletic tweets. The move opened up 40-man space for outfielder Billy Hamilton, whom the Braves claimed off waivers from the Royals.

This will be a season-ending development for Webb, whose elbow problems have helped prevent him from pitching in the majors since July 12. He had been in the minors over the past couple weeks after coming off the 10-day IL on Aug. 4. The 26-year-old will wrap up his rookie campaign having pitched to a measly 1.39 ERA over 32 1/3 innings. Of course, ERA indicators FIP (4.31), xFIP (5.14) and SIERA (4.54) weren’t nearly as bullish on Webb’s work, while his strikeout, walk and groundball rates (7.79 K/9, 3.34 BB/9, 38.2 GB%) also suggest he’d have had a difficult time upholding his great ERA had he stayed healthy.

In fairness to Webb, he doesn’t simply look like a case of smoke and mirrors. The hard thrower logged a strong 17.5 percent infield fly rate before hitting the IL last month and also emerged as a Statcast favorite. Webb’s fastball velocity (95.1 mph; 81st percentile) and spin rate (88th percentile) have been among the most impressive in the game in 2019, which is also true of his expected weighted on-base average (.287) and real wOBA against (.281).

It’s debatable how much good fortune factored into Webb’s success this year, but what’s clear is that he has been one of the few Atlanta relievers to post overwhelmingly positive results in the run prevention category. Webb is far and away No. 1 in ERA among all regular Braves bullpen arms, so it’s a letdown for the NL East leaders to lose a promising young hurler in what has been a trying season for their relief corps.

Check Faulty’s elbow. Maybe they can find something wrong with him so we don’t have to see him pitch for the Braves ever again.

No really why you calling him a moron? I know he is a terrible pitcher who will never amount to anything, but moron? C’mon!

Give this child a break. I used to give him a hard time until I found out he was way too young to even remember the year 1995. My guess is that abandoned wasn’t even a twinkle in his fathers eye at that point. Regardless, I feel bad now. You are definitely dealing with a child here. I don’t mean that as some kind of insult to cut him down. He is literally a minor. His frontal cortex isn’t even developed enough to make real critical thought. I highly doubt he is old enough to ever remember watching Maddux, Glavine or Smoltz pitch a single game. I wouldn’t be surprised if he never watched Chipper play a single game. He is at that awkward arrogant stage in his life where he thinks he knows everything but somehow knows nothing. He seems to be a little more belligerent than most people are at his age in addition to the fact that he seems to really relish a more than healthy amount of undivided attention. I guess he figures negative attention is better than no attention at all. It’s kinda sad but he does this all the time. I get why people call abandoned a moron but I try not to. It’s a little unfair because he doesn’t have a fully formed brain and has no legitimate point of reference like adults do. Anyhow… It’s okay abandoned. Just be glad you used a screen name instead of your real name. When you are about 10 or 20 years older you will look at your posts and be very embaressed about how immature they are. Just wait until you are actually old enough to legally buy a beer at the Braves game. That’s when you will realize that life can be enjoyable without making a bunch of online posts just to make people irritated enough to give you some attention. He’s a kid people. You have probably seen more baseball games in the past 3 years than he has watched in his entire life. We were all relatively immature at some point in our lives. He will eventually grow out of it and be embarrassed about how these posts he makes show how little he actually knows. A couple years later he will be even more embarrassed about how obvious it is he is only making these posts because he craves attention regardless of which form it comes in. If you didn’t feel the need to make posts like this when you were growing up then you probably had a more nourishing/stimulating childhood than he did. So, at least there’s that… right?

All that effort just for me? Too bad not of this is true. But damn, you seem to care that much about me, you decide to write a wall text of information? I’m flattered!

I wish Faulty put this much effort in his pitching. He might end up an average pitcher.

You know they have nothing better to argue when they critique my intentional misspelling of a badly flawed pitcher. It is actually funny how offended they get just because I’m not pahsitive, when there is no reasons to be.

And then you have this broken Hispanic robot you keeps chirping “Please get help.” He seems thinks I can do something about that.

He keeps repeating that in all posts instead of saying that to the Braves directly. Sorry pal, can’t do anything about it!

I read a post the other day where you admitted that you were too young to even remember the 1995 championship season. I am not gonna point out your misspelling so I am gonna assume you meant NONE of what I said was true. So were you lying in that post or are you accusing me of making that up? Either one of those things is true or your grammar is so bad that no one can understand what you mean even if they fix your spelling for you. If not than you are just lying now.

You really take everything I say seriously huh? Common for people who are over-sensitive and looking to interpret everything to fit their narrative. Personally, I don’t care about you think and I’m just going to allow you to assume whatever you want. No reason for me to defend myself against the white knights of the internet.

Can someone please tell me a DH in that situation where keuchel had to bat in the 4th with the bases loaded can’t affect a teams momentum over the course of a season over and over and over and over again…? More times than not, rather than an automatic out or a hope and a prayer, this game has a way better chance of being 2-1, 3-1..etc. Pitchers hitting is absolutely jurassic plain and simple, get it done and get both leagues on a level playing field for God’s sake.
You traditionalists have fallen on deaf ears, there’s plenty of Billy Hamiltons looking for work to make things much more exciting in this game..

I can look at a guys whip and pretty much know all I need to know. Analytic would talk you out of pitching this guy, but all he did was perform. I do agree, he pitched better than he will ultimately pitch for his career, but if he can get/stay healthy…. I think he will have a solid mlb career in the bullpen.

He has simply not been the same guy since the initial elbow injury. His minor league stats since he came off the IL have been bad, Velho is down, command is off.

Whip, k to BB ratio, BB per 9 and K per 9, tell me more than all this analytic crap. Some of its good but most of it is just pointless, look at the Phillies their manager is all about analytics and he has been horrible.

Why? Alonso, Tatis and Soroka (in no particular order) should be top 3. And if anyone gets a token 3rd place vote it would/should be Aristides Aquino
