Rangers general manager Jon Daniels suggested last week the club could reduce beleaguered second baseman Rougned Odor’s playing time. Manager Chris Woodward was even more aggressive Thursday in saying the Rangers need better from Odor, telling TR Sullivan of MLB.com that he’s “obviously got to show some improvement.” Otherwise, the Rangers will “have to make some decisions,” Woodward said, adding: “We are willing to withstand some lack of production, but this is the big leagues. I hate to say it, but you’ve got to be good to play every day, and he knows.” Woodward believes the rest of the season will be critical for Odor, who has turned in abysmal production for the second time since 2017. Prospect Nick Solak has been eating into Odor’s playing time of late as a result. Contrary to the inexpensive Solak, Odor’s causing a sizable dent in the Texas payroll. He’ll earn a guaranteed $36MM from 2020-22, including a $3MM buyout for ’23. Finances notwithstanding, Woodward will be reluctant to continue penciling Odor into the lineup if he continues putting up bottom-of-the-barrel numbers.
- The Padres are anticipating a heated second base competition next spring between Luis Urias and Ty France, per AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. Urias is the more hyped player of the duo, as he’s not far removed from a run as an elite prospect, but San Diego doesn’t want to simply hand him a starting job. The 22-year-old has recorded weak offensive totals since he debuted in the majors last season, having logged a .191/.302/.289 line through 202 trips to the plate, though Urias has been much more productive this month. He also laid waste to Triple-A pitching earlier this season. France, 25, has been even better this season at that level, where he has performed like one of the premier hitters in the minors with a jaw-dropping .399/.477/.770 line and 27 home runs over 348 PA. However, like Urias, France hasn’t done much at the big league level to this point.
- Pirates GM Neal Huntington is seemingly leaving the door open for the club to promote one of its top prospects, third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes, when rosters expand this Sunday. The 22-year-old hasn’t thrived overall this season in his first action at Triple-A, where he has batted .266/.334/.420 in 459 plate appearances, but he has caught fire since a slow start. Asked if the defensively adept Hayes’ recent success with the bat could lead to his first major league call-up, Huntington told Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic (subscription required), “It could in theory.” However, as you’d expect, Huntington went on to indicate the Pirates don’t want to rush him to the game’s highest level. With that in mind, Pittsburgh “probably” won’t summon Hayes to the majors this year, Biertempfel writes.
- White Sox star Yoan Moncada has already changed positions once during his short career. After playing second base from 2017-18, he has lined up at third for the entirety of this season. While Moncada told Scott Merkin of MLB.com he expects to continue at the hot corner “for a very, very long time,” he’d be willing to move elsewhere if it helps the team. That’s unlikely to happen, per Merkin, though he notes the White Sox could do a 180 if they’re able to land, say, third baseman Anthony Rendon in free agency. In that case, Moncada could shift back to second or even the outfield – two areas that have been weak points for Chicago in 2019.
Aaron Sapoznik
The White Sox are not signing FA Anthony Rendon. Moncada is solid at the hot corner and at the plate. They will prioritize a lefty-hitter this offseason in free agency or via the trade route to balance off a batting order that leans heavily right-handed. That player will most likely be their new right-fielder.
The White Sox are also set at 2B with future AL Gold Glove Batting Champion Nick Madrigal.

So we’re not allowed to make predictions on here anymore? I certainly missed the memo.
I don’t see anything wrong with what Aaron said. If the Sox could sign Rendon, I suppose sure, why not, but I don’t see that happening either. The Sox are more likely to sign a SP than another 3B, especially since 3B looks like a natural position for Moncada. Sure, Rendon would be a defensive upgrade to Moncada, but is he enough of an upgrade to offset the defensive dip by sticking Moncada in the OF? And I don’t see sticking him as the full-time DH (or Eloy either, for that matter).
To me, Rendon’s just a big name the sports media throws out there to generate false excitement in certain fan bases. Basically click bait. Maybe Hahn has his eye on Rendon, I don’t know. I would think he’s looking to add where there’s more of a need for the Sox, like RF, SP, strengthening the pen. That’s my prediction, which, wow, that’s a lot like Aaron’s prediction.
Big Hurt
Yeah – I will say the same thing I said when they were going after Machado (although I like Rendon better)… They need a big lefty bat, and probably not in the infield. If that’s the case, why consider shooting your free agent load on a righthanded hitting IF? Again – Rendon is a stud, just not the right fit knowing what’s on the roster and in the minors. The Sox top offensive prospects are all righthanded hitters (Vaughn, Madrigal and Robert) – there are other needs.

No way the Nats let Rendon walk. He is gonna command a hefty price

They should have went after Harper hard. Not Machado at all.

No chance on Harper. Phillies will be choking on that contract for a decade.

@Plot Thickens
I’m not normally a betting man, but I’d take that bet. I am not guaranteeing he will win those, but seeing how well he’s hit at every level so far in that relatively short amount of time (plus how well he’s played defense so far), why not? I wouldn’t go to Vegas and plunk $10K on it happening, but if it were a bet for $20 with a friend, that’s a bet I’d take.
Dogbone
Yeah sure, Sox will sign Rendon. Just like they were ‘signing’ Harper, Barry Bonds, Manny Machado and the rest.
Merkin is just a delusional shill for the Sox fans. He has been so, for quite awhile.

I mostly agree with dogbone here. It’s as if the reporter tried challenging the “very, very long time” response with a trade possibility of Rendon to see if he’d flounder.
maximumvelocity
If you can sign Rendon, you sign Rendon.
Moncada has been average at best at 3b, and his defensive metrics suggests he’s been subpar.
He could not only be switched to 2b, he could be moved to RF, which is a position of need, or even 1b, as he has size and hands to play there. I never bought the idea that you have to reserve first for a poor athlete.
They don’t have any player who is as good as Rendon. You don’t target guys for need, when you have other guys with potential positional flexibility.
Aaron Sapoznik
If you watch Yoan Moncada on a daily basis like most White Sox fans you would realize he is a natural at 3B, much more so than he was at 2B. His athleticism far exceeds that of most MLB players at that position. Forget the current metrics and consider the plays he makes that most 3B can’t. It should also be pointed out that the hot corner is a fairly new position for him. He was primarily a 2B throughout his professional career with the exception of his brief MLB debut with the Red Sox in September of 2016 when Boston needed help at the hot corner down the stretch.
In my opinion Moncada will be a contender for a Gold Glove at the hot corner, just as Nick Madrigal will be at 2B. Because of his athleticism and instincts, Moncada has a better chance of approaching the defense of Nolan Arenado than most other noted 3B including Anthony Rendon and Kris Bryant.
Moncada himself views 3B as his best defensive position but he would be willing to move to the OF if it benefited the team. That will be unnecessary with the White Sox prioritizing a veteran starting pitcher and a solid left-handed bat this offseason. Additionally, the White Sox will not sign Rendon and forfeit their 2nd round 2020 June draft pick and $500k of international bonus dollars because of the qualifying offer he would receive form the Nationals provided he doesn’t re-sign with them first.
The QO will also be a factor in their pursuit of a more needed free agent like starting pitchers Garret Cole or Madison Bumgarner which is why I would bet on the White Sox signing Mark Buehrle “clone” Dallas Keuchel this offseason. Keuchel cannot be extended another QO since he was tagged with one last offseason.
Aaron Sapoznik
Btw: Any defensive change on the left side of the White Sox infield will more likely involve SS Tim Anderson than Yoan Moncada. Anderson has been a SS his entire professional career and his defense has regressed considerably in 2019, particularly when it comes to routine plays.
I could envision Anderson moving to the OF sooner than Moncada, especially since the White Sox already have an MLB caliber defensive prospect in their system in recently signed international free agent Yolbert Sanchez who was a former teammate of Luis Robert in Cuba. Sanchez is already 22-years old and his major obstacle in reaching the big leagues is his bat. His pro debut in the just concluded DSL showed he had promise with the bat, particularly with his OBP and his 15/12 BB/SO ration in 127 PA’s.
Another possibility this offseason would be for the White Sox to sign pending Yankee free agent SS Didi Gregorius who would make more sense as a lefty hitter with power than Anthony Rendon might be as their new 3B. Gregorius would come a whole lot cheaper than Rendon and would be less likely to receive a QO from the Yankees than Rendon who is a lock to get one from the Nationals. Signing Gregorius would then allow to the White Sox to move Anderson to the OF which would seem a more natural fit than having Moncada do the same. Anderson could also potentially be used as trade bait in order to acquire a starting pitcher or the White Sox future catcher although I would prefer the organization retain him because of his electric bat, speed on the bases and bravado attitude in the clubhouse and on the field. Anderson has a lot of A.J. Pierzynski in him which I view as a good thing for a young team trying to transition from losing to winning.
Grebek7
I will pass on Keuchel. He hasn’t been good in 3 years, is a back of the rotation starter at best going forward. Jerry will not outbid all other teams for Cole or any other big name SP. Sox much more likely to overpay for a Rendon-type bat (Boras client & i don’t see him leaving Washington). Eloy has a lot of work to do in the field & at the plate still. Charlie Blackmon would be ideal if he was a few yrs younger. ChiSox 2020 World Series Champs ! Mercy !
Koamalu
Moncada may eventually be average at 3B. He is not making the plays that Arenado, Chapman, Machado, Bregman, or even Longoria do at 3B. He is not even as good as Rendon at 3B and he certainly is not as good of a hitter. If you can sign Rendon, you sign him and move Moncada somewhere else on the field.
Idioms for Idiots
@Aaron Sapoznik
I agree. I don’t think Hahn has more than an obligatory interest in Rendon. I think Hahn will do his due diligence, as he calls it, but I don’t see it as being more than that. Yet the sports media will link Rendon to the Sox, among many other teams, because the Sox have the payroll flexibility for the enormous contract he will receive. Especially now because of their pursuit for Machado last season.
The Sox absolutely could use Rendon, no doubt about that. But unless you plan on moving Moncada or Mardigal this Winter or making Moncada the full-time DH, I don’t see it happening, at least not to where Hahn’s going to outbid everyone else for him, which he would definitely have to overbid on Rendon. I think Hahn will go for more pressing needs, such as what you mentioned.
Dogbone
Plus, and don’t forget – by signing him – that means paying him money. Reinsdorf doesn’t do that. His biggest expenditure ever, is the current Jose Abreu contract. Hahahahaha.
krillin89
They offered manny over 200 mill
Dogbone
Yeah, knowing he wouldn’t accept it, cause he was being low balled.
cysoxsale
it’s also not necessarily true. I can say the grass is purple that doesn’t make it so.
maximumvelocity
I agree there are more pressing needs, but guys like Rendon don’t reach free agency often.
Like I said, if the team has to move Moncada to RF or even 1B to accommodate Madrigal, so be it, as he probably would max out as an average defender at each position anyway.
This team can’t hit. They are also poor defensively. Rendon + Madrigal+ Robert would address those issues.
If the concern is that Abreu will want to play 1B, or that guys like Collins or Sheets would be blocked, so be it. Abreu can DH, Collins can be a backup who plays against RH pitching and spells at DH and 1B and Sheets can be traded.
chicagofan1978
If they sign Rendon they have no need to resign Abreu.
Rallyshirt
@83sox
I think our pursuit for SP this year is little more than wagging the dog. We have 5-6 young and talented starters all returning next year, and more in the hopper. We sign a multi year contract on a SP now, we might as well trade away that cheap, high upside talent anyway.
Dallas Keuchel? You think were going to throw big cash at scraps after trying to throw big cash at elite players? Oh, no, no.
The best FA out there for this ballclub is Yasiel Puig, for about ten reasons (all of which are more important to the organization now and in the future than his not hitting left side).
krillin89
I would say when you have a shot at a Redon caliber player, then whether they are left handed or right handed doesn’t matter. You could always platoon at a different position.
cysoxsale
because they wont sign anyone. 9 figure contracts wont exist because JR is a horrible disgusting cheapskate snake
Grebek7
Hopefully, they can land a bigtime SP in a trade for TA7. Timmy just keeping Madrigal’s seat warm. Sign or trade for a great bat like Rendon. 2020 ChiSox need to be a playoff contender, they’ve been awful for 10 yrs now & the division is wide open why they signed Alonso instead of focusing on trading for E.E. or adding Nelson Cruz is beyond me. Bring up Robert already.
Aaron Sapoznik
How do you figure Tim Anderson is keeping the seat warm for Nick Madrigal? Anderson has played SS exclusively while Madrigal has been at 2B with the exception of his first pro game in the AZL last season, one in which he made a rare error. At 2B, Madrigal owns a .994 Fld.% in each of 2018 and 2019. His last error this season was on May 31st when he was still playing at A+ Winston-Salem. He has committed ZERO errors since in AA and AAA.
When the White Sox used their 2018 first round pick on Nick Madrigal I was already posting that Yoan Moncada was going to transition to 3B in order to make room for their new Gold Glove caliber player at 2B. Because of Madrigal’s advanced college bat, excellent defense and off the chart baseball IQ most scouts had an early 2020 ETA for him if not sooner. This was another reason that I had championed the White Sox pursuit of FA Bryce Harper last winter over Manny Machado. Harper would have provided the White Sox with a high OPS left-handed bat that the system is still short on to say nothing of what he might have done in putting the White Sox back on the map locally as well as nationally. Machado would have been a fine addition but the White Sox already had enough right-handed bats along with two players who could have filled their decade long void at 3B, Moncada as well as 2017 first round pick Jake Burger who has had the terrible misfortune of missing two seasons with two achilles tendon tears and a bruised left heel. Since then Moncada has established that he belongs at 3B rather than 2B while the organization still has high hopes for Burger going forward, including at the hot corner.
CluHaywood
I agree. I think they focus on Cole and likely Puig. They have been linked to him for a couple years with trade rumors. I also dont know of a left handed bat this FA period that they are going to want to be all in on. It’s a very weak hitters market for younger players, most being 30+
knolln
Hitter friendly is one thing, ty Frances numbers are absolutely absurd. You just have to try him at the next level until it takes. He’s broken the minor league game
Koamalu
His numbers have been bad in the majors and his defense has been worse. France is a 1B or a DH. In the NL you have to play defense and he is bad at every position he has played in the minors and the majors. The best thing the Padres could have done would have been to include him in a trade for a starter when he was hitting .400 in AAA in July.
zippytms
Spoken like someone who has clearly never watched him play. His defense is pretty good at third base and he’s been serviceable at 2B so far. Nobody’s going to confuse him for Manny Machado with the leather, but he’s good enough to hold the job down at 3B and be an option at 2B at the very least.
knolln
I’ll always love the punch, I hope you have many horses and great lands roughned sr.
Strike Four
Solak is better than Odor. Texas should not have locked down a prospect so young like they did Odor, now they have to “eat crow” on him, or keep him and make him change positions because 1B is the only place his bat plays.
knolln
That’s the last place his bat plays. 2b? Maybe, he’s still a roadblock in an AL lineup, and his glove doesn’t justify being one
knolln
Yes they need to eat crow and play solar, he’s not a good defender but his bat is real. But they have Calhoun, choo, pence for a few more weeks.
Coal tender
GM Daniels really screwed up by “locking down” Odor for 5 years. Didn’t think Daniels was a betting man, but he went out on a limb and signed Odor to that insane contract. Chalk it up as a huge miscalculation and hopefully learn from it.
Soapbox
Its past time for Jon Daniels to move on.
madmanTX
JD is a fine GM. He gambles on some players, but wants to lock down homegrown talent that might blossom into a superstar. What’s wrong with that? You can move on.
jbigz12
Daniels has redeemed himself the last 2 off seasons with getting Lynn and minor for a combined 66 million for 6 seasons. It turned out to be a bad gamble for odor but I’m not going to slam him for it. He was a 22 who hit 33 bombs. It wasn’t out of the question for this guy to develop further as he actually reached his prime. He didn’t and the K issues got worse but that’s the risk you take locking in a young player. The guarantee was definitely a little high for that gamble though.
knolln
You’re both trolls or morons. Minor, Lynn, 5 years of complaining about choo, only to realize he’s the exact lead off signed up for. Not to mention the andrus/Harrison gold mine, the best 3rd baseman in how many years. Murphy for the roided up (but fun) gagne. Yes this is just a long way of me calling you morons. You’re morons.
jbigz12
Odor’s bat plays at 1B but not second? In what world did second baseman start outhitting first baseman? Another ridiculous comment from ol S4. A .666 OPS plays nowhere but catcher. That’s what Odor is slashing. I don’t know how you rationalize this crap you say.
Strike Four
ah yes, jbigz12 one again being a clueless troll and not understanding how low the depth chart is league-wide at 1B while its stacked at 2B, and how power-only guys like Odor actually can survive at 1B right now, but 2B is actually more stacked than 1B when it comes to offense. Its not 1970 anymore, genius.
How do you even know about this site, when you have absolutely no clue about baseball, period?
jbigz12
A .677 OPS does not play at 1B. And 2b is not a more “stacked” position. That’s complete nonsense that he can move over to 1B because “his offense profiles better there.” That’s an absolutely idiotic statement on its face. A .677 OPS (64WRC+ ) plays nowhere but catcher for one thing. Doesn’t even play well there.
But I suppose next you’re going to tell me that 2B have higher WAR as an argument for why odor would be better at first? I can tell you why that’s a load of crap as well if you’d like. Or are you going to go to the argument that 2B has more “studs” like Torres and Altuve? Because that has absolutely no bearing on the depth of the 2B position. Either way it’s categorically wrong.
Koamalu
At .192 I am not sure his bat plays anywhere.

What the White Sox did instead is to sign Fernando Tatis Jr.’s brother Elijah during the most recent international signing period. They will keep him around long enough to entice Fernando to return to the organization once he is eligible for free agency. lmao

There are far too many stupid observations like yours on here. The Rangers can’t just assume all their players will tank and not sign their youngsters to long term deals. And for anybody….anybody…to guarantee which players will soar and which will not, well they don’t exist, bubba. Even known superstars have tanked after big contracts and they were superstars! He has also not particularly deserved a call up as he has not developed into a bona fide hitter at this point.
They need to use this last month as a test case for several players more advanced than Hayes.

I think the Odor thing is more of a threat. Than actual playing time.
Do the Rangers have better options waiting in the minors. ?
3 more years at a good price. There is no way this guy gets booted from starting… Just something for him to think about.
It seems he’s a headcase player. Bad start. Got hot. Road it thru July. Then tanked. . . Maybe the team went down and he checked out. Got in a slump and didn’t care to get it together. Also injuries to other players can impact the lineup. All factors.
I rooted for the guy to get over .200 plus. But this month has been the worst. I think more tinkering with his swing is in the works come off-season…….
User 1104686089
Not in the minors, the point is that Solak has been hitting and needs a place in the lineup. Bench odor and let Nick play.
Coal tender
Odor needs to overcome a tendency to “swing for the fences” and it has cost him from helping the team. His SO rates are hideous which seems to indicate not able to pick up pitches thrown at him. The “badass” attitude on the field doesn’t help his image at all.
tsc32
They literally called up his replacement a few weeks ago. The story even mentions him. Nick Solak.
Coal tender
I think it is all in his head! He needs to put away the “macho thing” that’s going on with him. Seems the “Bautista incident” was a “turning point” for him and it has been down hill ever since. As for his lack of production, he needs to throttle down from that HR swing each time he takes a pitch! All he has to do is make solid bat contact, and that can be easily accomplished by dialing down the “gorilla swing!” Get the bat in the hitting zone and zoom your chances rise in getting on base. Some have said that he has poor pitch recognition technique, that may or not be so, but tempering that swing can pay dividends for him. He is a good second baseman though.

The Texas Rangers are currently just running an extended training camp. Daniels pulling ever media stunt he can to put fans in the seats but when all said and done, they are playing terrible baseball. I’m guessing TV rating are bottomed out. Its Bob Simpson and Ray Davis’ club they are the only ones that can turn this around. Team has decent coaching. Jon Daniels cannot judge baseball talent and I question the people around him either their ability or their job is being hampered by interference. He calls it a rebuilding year, We will see. Daniels has done nothing in the past two winters to improve the ball club. I doubted a rumor there are players that will not play for Daniels but now I wonder. Odd but a fact, Nolan Ryan was the Rangers CEO and provided us with playoff teams. Ryan is now The Executive Adviser to the owner of the Houston Astros, who won a world series and have been a playoff-caliber team ever since. Those are just facts. The rest is just observation from a long-time Ranger fan.
Garmo87
Odor was on the cusp. He earned the contract. The problems started after the contract signing. Daniels had the middle infield set. Odor not performing was not predictable. Everyone was excited for the signing. It’s time to bench, deconstruct, trade during the off-season. He is human and he is trying. I’m sure his lack of productivity is just as frustrating for him as it is for fans.
padnastikador
It’s not that Daniels can’t judge baseball talent, it’s that he can’t draft and develop it. The Rangers are one of the worst teams in baseball at developing their young talent. Daniels knows this. He’s targeting teams who are capable of developing players when he makes trades. Tampa Bay, Atlanta, and the Dodgers brought the Rangers Burke, Solak, Gibaut, Allard, & Calhoun. Those were good trades by Daniels.
tsc32
I like Nolan and I think he helps plenty in a front office but the dude joined Texas and later Houston after most of the hard work had been done in rebuilding. I don’t get why people still give him 100% of the credit and act like he’s got some magic touch.
padnastikador
Nolan Ryan convinced Bob Simpson and Ray Davis to buy the Rangers. After they restructured the organization, firing some Nolan guys like Jackie Moore, Nolan resigned and his team ownership was bought out. Simpson and Davis then extended Daniels contract. If you think Daniels is part of the problem, then so are Simpson and Davis.
