Mets Designate Ruben Tejada

By Jeff Todd | August 22, 2019 at 2:13pm CDT

The Mets announced today that they have designated infielder Ruben Tejada for assignment. He’ll make way for righty Chris Flexen, who was recalled.

Tejada’s latest stint with the New York org has to this point been a feel-good reunion story. But the 29-year-old has only been given nine plate appearances over his brief time in the big leagues and hasn’t yet reached base.

It’s possible Tejada will remain with the Mets, but that won’t be up to the team. Every other team in baseball will have a shot at claiming him. If he clears waivers, Tejada will have the right to elect free agency.

Despite a scant recent track record in the majors — he was last a notable contributor in 2015 — Tejada has shown a bit of a spark this year in the upper minors. Over 304 Triple-A plate appearances leading up to his promotion, he slashed a hefty .330/.408/.476 with six long balls.

This doesn’t make much sense to me. You’d think they’d have held on to him until rosters expand a week from Sunday. To expose him just to bring one of their AAAA pitchers up is a headscratcher. If anyone needs to go, it should be Altherr. Guillorme has options, so this seems unnecessary.

Expose him? A 29 year old with a track record of being a below avg mlb player. I think they’re safe

I’m sure there were reasons that aren’t being stated. GMs don’t make stupid decisions or decisions off the cuff.

Guillorme has been good off the bench has gotten some big hits, Altherr should have been the guy to be sent down or DFA

Altherr’s ability to remain in the majors with zero production remains a total mystery.

Can anyone explain this guy’s presence when others with more to offer get DFA’d?

Someone please tell me how in the hell Altherr is still on any major league roster? I mean did he pull the Wilpons out of a burning building and they owe it to him? He’s a complete dumpster fire. A waste of a roster spot. I would rather have Tejada then him on the team.

No big deal. He hasn’t done anything since his call up and was really just a 25th man. Raj Davis is back whom is a much more useful player in a greater position of need.

Don’t believe Reuben can be optioned since he has plenty of service time in the bigs, so dfa was the only way to move him…

He might be out of options anyways.

With JD having his leg issue over the weekend, I understand keeping Altherr until Nimmo is ready.

If Altherr survives Nimmo’s return, he probably has pix of BVW in compromising positions – like, wearing Yankees gear, or something horrible like that!
