The Mariners outrighted three players today, per a club announcement. Corner infielder Ryon Healy is the most notable name departing the 40-man. He’s joined by righty relievers Chasen Bradford and Connor Sadzeck.
All three of these players finished their seasons on the 60-day injured list. They’d have required 40-man roster space all offseason had it not been for today’s decision.
Healy is dealing with quite significant health problems, including a diagnosis of spinal stenosis and ensuing hip surgery. It’s not clear at this point whether and when the 27-year-old will be able to resume his career. Healy projected to earn $2.5MM via arbitration, a hefty sum given the uncertainty. He’ll have the right to elect free agency by virtue of his MLB service time.
Bradford underwent Tommy John surgery two months ago, making it hard to imagine he’ll be much of a factor in 2020. The 30-year-old was a solid performer in his first two MLB campaigns but doesn’t carry the peripherals of a dominant relief pitcher.
There’s quite a bit more potential upside for Sadzeck, a live-armed 28-year-old who rewarded the M’s for taking a shot on him. He allowed just seven earned runs in 23 2/3 frames, racking up 27 strikeouts against 15 walks, before going down with flexor mass issues. He seemed like a potential find for the Seattle organization, but the club evidently decided that the arm issues and Sadzeck’s longstanding control problems were too great to tie up a roster spot on him all winter.

Healy’s hands were so quick I thought he was a sure fire solid major leaguer for a while. Injuries like his are why I have no problem with player in any sport trying to get as much money as soon as possible. His career could possibly be over, and he barely had a chance to earn his potential. Heck, his production in Oakland should have earned him a tad more than his career earnings.
Healy is a terrible defender and average to below average hitter. If he was anything else they’d have kept the rights to him
He’s also an extremely detrimental baserunner. There’s little upside in his profile unless you wish on him suddenly being a 20% better hitter or you can afford to roster a small platoon first baseman. If his career continues he’ll have to do so as a minor league journeyman.
Healy and his sub-.300 OBP with less than average power from a corner IF spot needed to go. Great guy, love his attitude and his love for the game but I’m ok to see him outrighted. Good luck to him.
Injuries folks. Injuries… his healthy years he looked like he had some upside. Everyone act like I said he was a superstar, but I’m simply said I thought he would potentially be a solid mlb player. I didn’t say he should be making $300 mil… y’all get so defensive and feel the weird need to puff your chest out over the littlest thing
Didn’t really think anyone was getting defensive and pumping out their chests, seems like they were rational replies and were pretty spot on. Healy seems like an overseas guy, could probably mash in Japan or Korea. But I don’t see it happening here.
Surprised Sadzeck was outrighted and cleared.
I thought it would be pretty clear cut. Shaky peripherals have to instill some doubt for starters, and then add in eblow problems. Offer him a minor league deal though.
Yeah, I’m for this, too. I’d like to keep him around until he’s out of options. Solid depth piece. Have to keep AAA stocked with relievers who can fill in.
He’s already out of options. Can file for free agency and become a journeyman.
Sadzeck surprised me as well. His injury must be worse than believed.
spinal stenosis is what knocked David Wright out of the game
Healy = Shea Hillenbrand 2.0
Too bad Bradford will miss next year. He’s a guy I wanted the Mets to keep and he turned out solid. Definitely getting a NRI in 2021 and possibly a major league deal
He has pretty bad peripherals and now recovering from Tommy John, it’s doubtful anyone would give him a major league deal.
Tommy John surgery can add up to 3-4 mph to a fastball if recovered from properly. It’s why a lot of high school & college kids are electing for it sooner than later, often times probably too soon.

Kind of a high arbitration projection for Healy Jeff. He had a terrible injury shortened season and he’s coming of a near minimum salary…..
He’s not guessing, them’s the figures. When you hit ARB1 you get paid for everything you’ve done in MLB, not just the previous season.
