MLBTR Poll: Who’s Going To The NLCS?

By Connor Byrne | October 9, 2019 at 1:09am CDT

If you like baseball (you’re reading this, so you probably do), Wednesday evening already looks rather promising. All four of the National League’s remaining playoff teams will square off then in win-or-go-home contests to conclude their thrilling NLDS matchups. The top-seeded Dodgers will take on the Nationals in Los Angeles, while the Braves will host the Cardinals.

To many, a third straight pennant for the perennially dominant Dodgers looked like a foregone conclusion entering the playoffs. But the 106-win club has had its hands full with the Nationals, a 93-69 team that needed a miraculous comeback over the Brewers in the wild-card game just to reach the NLDS. The Dodgers have led this series twice (1-0 and 2-1), but they’ve been unable to stamp out the Nationals, thanks in part to the heroics of Washington co-aces Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg. The latter’s slated to take the ball in Game 5 against Walker Buehler, who has supplanted Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw as LA’s most valuable starter. Buehler put forth his latest ace-caliber effort in the Dodgers’ Game 1 win last Thursday, when he fired six scoreless, one-hit innings.

In Atlanta, the Braves will send Mike Foltynewicz to the mound to battle Jack Flaherty, who – like Buehler – has burst on the scene as an elite young arm. Foltynewicz entered the season as one of the Braves’ clear-cut top starters, though it nonetheless may seem hard to believe they’re turning to him with their season on the line. After all, the team did demote the 28-year-old to the minors in late June on the heels of a horrid few months. To his credit, however, Foltynewicz has rebounded since his early August return, and he continued to roll with seven shutout innings during a Game 2 victory over the Flaherty-led Cards. He’ll again contend with a St. Louis offense that has gotten exceptional production from Paul Goldschmidt and Marcell Ozuna in the series.

The 23-year-old Flaherty will deal with an Atlanta club that has seen outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. continue to stake his claim as one of the sport’s up-and-coming superstars in October. Runs may be hard to come by for Acuna & Co., though, as Flaherty hasn’t yielded more than three in a start since July 2. Dating back to then, Flaherty has given up a ridiculously low 14 earned runs in 113 1/3 innings and 17 starts.

Of course, it would be foolish to only mention the starters who are lined up for these two games. With all four clubs’ seasons on the line, they’ll likely be in all-hands-on-deck mode (or something close to it) as they attempt to reach the final round of the NL playoffs. As is often the case in the postseason, the teams’ bullpens will probably play integral roles in the outcomes. Which clubs do you expect to advance Wednesday?

Whoever said, save your ace for game 3 and never see him again, go fly a kite! That’s not how you win postseason series. This was HORRIBLY managed and should be reckoned with.. Leaving it up to 21 year Olds, keuchel,.faulty and this bullpen and you deserve to be fired for sure.
The Atlanta Braves have been mis-managed when it counts for FAR too long and it’s a shame to watch the waste of the talent come and go. Watching the gnats come back and win this game puts kosher salt in the wounds!

Strasburg has a chip on his shoulder and he knows he has a chance to cash in with his performance. I think the Nationals win game 5.

I expect the Braves/Cards game to be a high scoring affair. Will come down to the bullpens, with _______ winning. I want to say Br……but knowing how predictable the Braves are, the Cards will probably take it. I expect Acuna to play a BIGGGG role in who wins the game and when I say role, I mean he may help the Braves win, or do something to influence a lose.

Why are you expecting a high scoring game? You have one of the best pitchers in the NL starting for the Cardinals and the lowest scoring offense of all the playoff teams, also the Cardinals. Its baseball so you never know but this is a recipe for a low scoring game.

I think the Nats will win because of Strausburg and I think the Braves will win because Jack Flaherty just threw 117 pitches and is coming back on short rest and is a Rookie. If he does deliver then he will have given the most impressive pitching performance by a young pitcher since Beckett shut down the Yankees in 03.

But in today’s age you have to question any pitchers endurance coming back on short rest after throwing 117 pitches.

Everyone in the comments are picking the Nationals (good!), and even though I’m a Dodger fan, I’m merely hopeful but bracing for a first round exit.

It’s probably silly, but the one thing I cling to is the expectation of each fanbase: Washington’s is probably fearful of the inevitable letdown (as a Vikings fan, I know this all too well), and the Dodgers’ fanbase (myself included) expects that they’ll win. The Dodger team is also battle-tested, and many of these guys were on teams that won a road Game 5 against the Nationals, and a road Game 7 last year vs. the Brewers.

Being at home can’t hurt, and while hitting Strasburg is a daunting task, Walker Buehler is equally clutch.

But as soon as I feel any confidence, I realize that’s a scary Nats team and I should expect a letdown. I’m really just glad none of it really matters, certainly none of the babble I just posted.

That’s exactly how I feel every playoff season! I picked Dodgers, Stros, Yanks, and Braves for LCS. Would like to keep my pick in tact. And I’d like to see Atlanta win a series. Shoot, even the Nationals. As a Cards fan, of course I secretly hope they win. But with that season they just had? Hardly deserving.

I can’t be half as sanguine as you about the prospect of another postseason defeat and I doubt many other Dodger fans are either. If that happens the fan backlash will be huge and completely deserving, and nothing less than firing both Kasten and Friedman will do.

Don’t sleep on Walker Buehler. Him and Strasburg in a deciding game is exactly the kind of duel that gets people watching. Yes, pitching still brings eyes to the game.

The other series is Atlanta’s to lose. They should have taken care of business by now.

No, I am not talking about the bullpen meltdown/s, I am talking about a guy hitting the ball to the fence and watching it, he would have been at 3rd 1 out and if he scored it would have made the game 4-1. In the context of the game and the way it finished that extra run makes a massive difference.

I think the point that was being made here is that bullpens melt down, it’s a common occurrence in baseball. Martinez had a bad outing in game 1 as well. A player failing to run out a base hit because he was admiring his work is not a normal occurrence.
Even still the real reason the Braves lose this will be because the bats of their most productive players during the regular season went cold. A team can’t hope to win in the post season if their avg with RISP is below .100.

Acuña is hitting .500 in the series and got on base 4x in that game and had a 2-run HR later in the game and has demolished STL’s closer and gotten in his head, yet your takeaway is that? No matter that the 2nd best player with RISP (Freeman) in the league has done nothing offensively all series.

Kolarek for Soto. Guys like May, Maeda and Julio ( rested this time) are more than good enough to get the job done. If your fear is having a lead in the 9th than your head is not in the right place.

Kolarek will probably get Soto again. Maeda might be in the mix, but I’d say that’s it.

          Buehler
          Maeda
          Kolarek
          Kershaw
          Jansen

That’s the likely extent of Dodger arms tonight. And it could be Buehler to Kershaw and no one else.

Schedule calls for two late afternoon games, probably because they want the Dodgers in prime time for the east coast. 5pm game means people have to leave work early anyway. Could have Washington-LA at 5pm (2pm LA time), then St. Louis- Atlanta at 8pm, which would avoid the late afternoon shadows. But it’s about the TV ratings.

Why didn’t the MLB think of it? You’re going to have a portion of fans that may be late because of the 5pm start time, so why not switch a LA home game to 2??? so that virtually few fans can show up. Let’s promote our product with 2 young pitching stars and a ton of empty seats in a Game 5, but then again people don’t apparently work in LA. Never mind that the Dodgers have the best record in the NL with a Stras/Buehler matchup, all that is meaningless, because as we know the most important factor is shadows are more crucial come beginning of the STL/ATL game than at the backend of the WAS/LA game. I know I sound like a D, but logic wasn’t used in this statement, and it had more homerism masquerading as a bash against ratings. Not to mention Dodger fans deserve a little better than that come an elimination game.

Do you really think MLB cares about empty seats to start the game? It’s 100% about getting more people to watch on TV. That’s where the money is.

Not a homer because none of the teams are mine. I’m from Detroit and my team hasn’t been in it for a few years and won’t be for a few more.

If the Mets were home for the first game, would it start at 7 instead of 5? Then they would want those east coast TV ratings, and LA might start at 7 Pacific time. It’s only about the ratings because that’s where the money is. Baseball is a business first. That’s the reality.

I think the Braves have more talent, but at this stage the Cards have a bit more experience, and it feels like they want it more. I’m guessing a few guys (Waino and Yadi come immediately to mind) might have it in the backs of their heads that there may not be that many more chances for them. Home field hasn’t been a factor in this series…

This game is as much of a coinflip as I’ve ever seen (in advance)! I’m rooting Cards, won’t be disappointed if the Braves advance. Whatever it takes to keep the Dodgers out is fine by me!

Obviously I’m a Nats fan today. Will root for whoever wins the Braves/Cards matchup in the NLCS.

Either way, these 3 game 5s are going to be some of the best baseball in postseason history. Cant remember any other year with this much drama in the division series. Usually theres a clear cut favorite. Im gonna say that the Rays are going to upset the Astros, the Braves come out on top today, and unfortunately, i see the dodgers winning.

idk about that. Even though Verlander struggled last night, hes still Verlander, and having a rotation of Verlander and Cole in a 5 game series works way more against the Yankees than the opener that the Rays would do imo. I expect Cole to be lights out tomorrow, but i still see the Rays finding a way to scratch across a few runs to get the W

This is a perfect type of failure that should prove that this organization does not care about winning. I like being right and I’m right. If they don’t spend this offseason, if they don’t make trades this offseason, they will prove me right again. You have to be a delusional ***** to still root for this team. Just remember, all these players will still come home to their luxurious lives, win or lose. LM and the Braves know money is still and will be coming.

The series was over when they blew game 1. Everything has gone the Cards way since. It does not help when the Braves still put Faulty on the mound even though time and time again he fails at being consistent. Next season, it will be exactly the same again. Same faces, same results!

It is just so frustrating and heartbreaking watching the same **** every year. This is why I don’t care about division titles and why this season is another failure. If you consistently lose in the first round every year you are in the playoffs, the season is a failure. Last year was a failure, and so is this year. This is why I always bring up the Mets and the Phillies. They will only get better, while the Braves stand pat watching their prospects fail one at a time. I truly hope they either trade Faulty or just use him out of the bullpen. I honestly rather see a complete teardown over seeing Teheran, Faulty, Snitker, Jackson back with the Braves. At this point, I couldn’t care less anymore about Freeman either. In the words of Kevin O’leary, he is dead to me.

My only hope now is for the Nats to win their game because there is no ****ing way I want to root for the Dodgers.

I agree for the most part. Game one was mismanaged and as good as Acuna is nobody can get away with not running out of the box. A mistake as he put it but that’s not a mistake it’s a choice. Only part I’d have to disagree is regarding everything going the Cardinals way. They did blow a ninth inning lead in what’s usually a pivotal game 3 with the series tied 1-1. But game one was a big failure for the Braves top to bottom

I couldn’t take it anymore after the first but I do see freeman went 2-4 and donaldson hit a homerun when it didn’t matter, how convenient.. Bullpen and the middle of the lineup doomed us in a big time series once again. If im soroka, I’m demanding the start on short rest in this do or die game and if im snit, I’m giving you the ball and saying “go get em son!”
Folty is wayyy too inconsistent, he’s his own worst nightmare and then the season ends up on his shoulders, who woulda thunk!? Freeman makes that double play and who knows though.. Just like game 1 and game 4, you leave too many whatif’s in the table and you deserve to lose and be snake bitten!
I’ve always liked the cardinals and hope they beat the odds again from here on out.

This year who started game 5? Who won this game?

The common denominator is your answer and they happened either in game 1 or the deciding game. When you go into the season calling Faulty your ace, you deserve to lose.

Braves offense is as much to blame as the pitching, if not more!
