Padres Have Performed Due Diligence On Ron Washington

By Jeff Todd | October 7, 2019 at 8:16pm CDT

As the Padres continue compiling managerial candidates, they’ve taken a look at a battle-tested former skipper. The club has at least performed due diligence on former Rangers manager and current Braves coach Ron Washington, per Jon Heyman of MLB Network (via Twitter).

Washington was among the many names floated when the team decided to part ways with Andy Green. But it wasn’t clear then how serious the interest was. It’s still not entirely clear, but nevertheless remains notable that the Friars are looking closely at Washington. With experience said to be a key factor for the San Diego organization, the ongoing connection makes sense.

As Heyman notes, Preller has worked previously with Washington when both were with the Rangers organization. Washington resigned at the end of the 2014 season but joined the Athletics early in the next year as an infield coach and eventual third base coach. He went on to join the Braves as their third base coach in advance of the 2017 campaign and has remained in that role since.

Snitker needs to be fired. Washington should take over the Braves.

He was MOY in ’18 and has the Braves in the playoffs as division winners two seasons in a row… Why would you fire him?

He got the Braves to the playoffs because of the Marlins (like Teheran). His decisions have not paid off for the Braves at all this postseason. DK is a complete failure. A good team (which the Braves consider themselves to be) does not scrabble around hoping and praying their starters will produce. They have guys they can give the ball to and expect a win. They get what they deserve with DK. He is terrible and they now get to witness it. They are relying on Folty in game 5. A good team does not have such a question mark to pitch for them in the biggest game of the season.

The Cardinals should not be even where they are right now. The Braves outperformed the Cards in all 4 games. However, this is the Braves and they still continue to choke in the postseason and it is a team effort choke at that. Unfortunately, Freeman is breaking my heart so far and like a stubborn wife, I will never forgive him for that. He is (was) my favorite player but that is changing. Swanson may end up taking that card. People know how pessimistic I’am, yet I’ve supported Swanson all year. He is paying me back.

I’m still a firm believer he should be hitting higher in the lineup and Acuna should be hitting 2, maybe even 3 at this point.

I understand but he one of the few who is hitting and his hits are worthless when everybody under him is not performing. It won’t matter this season because they are not going to make any changes but heading forward they should consider it. It is pretty clear whatever they are doing right now is not working.

The bright side out of all of this is the guys I strongly dislike will not be back next year due to their performance this postseason. Hopefully, this is the end of Teheran, DK, and Donaldson.

Sign Bumgarner, trade for Charlie Morton. Have Soroka, Folty, and one of Anderson or Wright round out the rotation.

Not sure if you are being sarcastic but I think he is a reasonable option. The guy has performed in the playoffs in all his outings, including in 2017 with the Astros.

The Rays are not a team that will hang on to Morton for dear life.

Just look at game 162 against the Mets. He overmanaged the bullpen and they blew the game. Their regular season struggles in the last week or so has carried over to the postseason. I’m not going to blame Snit for DK’s incompetence, but the way he handled the bullpen after was bad.

Everything you just described is the GM’s Job (other than making out the batting order)…. The GM and Front Office staff fill the 40 man roster and the 25 man roster….Snit gets a vote sure….but not much more than that….

I really don’t want the Braves to get rid of Wash. He is the best 3b coach in MLB. He should have actually earned a win above replacement last season AS A THIRD BASE COACH! It sounds impossible, huh? On what should have been the last pitch of the game one of our batters swung and missed to strike out and the ball flew to the backstop. The umpire rung the hitter up and the hitter started walking away. Wash ran up to the ump and convinced him that the hitter fowl tipped the ball. The ump changed his mind and let the batter swing again. We had runners on base and I think we ended up winning as a result. On replay, the hitter clearly DID NOT foul tip the ball. Created a game winning at bat when there shouldn’t have been one. No more ther coach would have done that so to me that adds a full win to the team so the coach deserves a full win above replacement.
I’m not sure why anyone would “dislike” Donaldson though and I know Keuchel hasn’t been Cy Young caliber or anything but I wouldn’t go near as far to say he has been “terrible.” I don’t like Snitkers seemingly undying loyalty to Luke Jackson but other then that I think he is good. I would rather just trade Luke Jackson so Snit can’t use him then get rid of Snit. Snit tried batting Acuna deeper in the lineup but he didn’t perform nearly as well and begged Snit to go back to leadoff. When Snit moved him back he started hitting like a beast again. I get wanting him to have runners on base but it’s hard to argue with the results. Especially when they back up the hitters idea.
Tampa Bay is in the playoffs right now and Morton is their ace on a modest contract. They fully expect to contend next year and wouldn’t even consider trading him without getting a boatload in return. He is only under contract for one more year and is considering retiring after that. Trading anything substantial for 1 year of an aging starting pitcher is not smart. He likely wouldn’t be enough to push us over the top and the next year he will be gone and all that we traded for him will be wasted.

Sign A Declining Overpriced player with 3.90 ERA (worse than Tehran & Keuchel) in a Pitchers Park!!! If Bumgarner gets a QO then he will cost a draft pick & a lot of money. If he doesnt get a QO then that just show u his lack of value.

Then Trade for a Guy that is virtually Untradeable for the Ray’s?? (The Ray’s would likely demand a Package that only deGrom is worth or theyd hang up & block ur number).

And to finish it off We should also leave our winningest pitcher Max Fried out of the discussion for a spot.

That’s a terrible plan. Bumgarner had a great record in Playoffs but he was also a GREAT Pitcher at the time.

This wouldnt really make this team better.

Some people on here are getting a little upset because theyd rather lose Snitker than Washington. If Washington is willing to leave the Braves to be a manager the only way to Keep him would be giving him the job here.

          Acuna is a Career .297 hitter batting 1st & he hits .238 batting 2nd.

Acuna is comfortable batting where he is. That’s why he is hitting .500 4 games into the post season.

Swanson has been good & they should move him to the 3-Hole after Acuna & Albies.

They also need to stop starting Matt Joyce & give Duvall a well earned start.

Freeman is playing with a Bone Spur. I know he says he is fine but the stats show he is not fine at all. He has been slumping ever since he showed signs of pain. So I hope you will forgive him “for breaking your heart like a stubborn wife”.

The Braves probably should have started Soroka & Folty 1st & 2nd. (I am aware of the road stats but Soroka would still be on the Road game 4). But we havent lost this series yet. Snitker did a good job in Game 3. You could even give him some credit for Game 2.

He has certainly made a plethora of mistakes so far. He has also done some things right. You should AT LEAST let him finish the season b4 ramping up the “Fire him” talk. We arent officially out of it yet.

The Braves have been successful with Snitker. If they get Gerrit Cole in Free Agency this team could really make a Push next year.

I also know that in addition to beating up on the Marlins, The Braves had a winning record against the Nationals. I’d have to check on the Mets & Phillies but I think he had a winning record against them too.

I agree with virtually everything you say. The only thing I wish more Braves fans would understand is that their is basically a zero percent chance that Atlanta signs Cole. I mean literally less than a 1% chance. Unless people are referring to Cole Hammels. I could maybe see him coming if Keuchel leaves. The Braves are not going to beat out teams like the Yankees or Phillies in terms if offers and he isn’t going to take a discount unless he gets to play in his home state of California. I’m thinking Angels, Padres or Dodgers would be the only team he would take a discount for and he might not even have to take a discount to play for them. Padres and Angels will both offer more than the Braves. Oakland is too cheap to even get into the race. Yankees and Phillies will likely make the top offer and if the White Sox outbid everyone he could sign there. The Braves aren’t even going to try to outbid all of those teams and probably won’t outbid any of them.

People may say that they “don’t want the Braves to get rid of Ron Washington ” but I think what they mean is they don’t want the Braves to lose Ron Washington. I want him to stay with the Braves but not at the cost of Snit. If he has an opportunity to become a manager somewhere else I will miss him but wish him luck at the same time. You can’t stop a guy from advancing his career because you want to keep him in a remedial role. That’s just plain callous.

PseudoStar says stuff like this all the time. He wants the Braves to trade their high level prospects for short term Band-Aid assets. He claims he doesn’t believe the Braves prospects are that good because they are overhyped. He doesn’t like Ian Anderson “because he walks too many hitters.” Ian Anderson doesn’t walk very many hitter at all on a relative MiLB basis at all so I don’t know where he came up with that one. He clearly has never been a scout but somehow believes he knows more than every single major league scout out there even though they have been doing it for decades. He hasn’t said this but my guess is that he would support the idea of trading Ian Anderson’s entire career for what would likely be one single season of Charlie Morton. Not to mention the fact that he thinks the Braves only don’t spend enough money because they are “stupid.” Like there are hundreds of millions of dollars laying around that the Braves are refusing to spend eve though it would bring in great financial returns and the Braves don’t know enough about their own organization to realize it. I think he just wants the Braves to spend a bunch of cash at any cost and trade all of their prospects so he can see what he would envision as the best possible team on the field next year. Then he usually tries to make the Braves sound stupid for not doing what he prefers while not backing it up with statistical facts at all. It seems like he believes that if you aren’t a potential Cy Young candidate you should be in the Braves starting rotation at all no matter what your salary is. He also seems to “dislike” (his own words) some players that are actually very good and never explains why. I think the one that surprised me the most today was Josh Donaldson. He will always complain until the Braves do exactly what he wants all the time. The irony in the whole situation is that if they did that they would lose all of their prospects and have no future payroll to spend (he doesn’t believe the payroll aspect because he thinks Liberty Media will somehow just add $100 million to the payroll every year without question) and the Braves likely wouldn’t win it all anyways. In his opinion the Braves should spend all their future resources to go for it all in one year because everything might go perfect (which it never does in a 162 game schedule). Then when it doesn’t go perfect and the Braves payroll and farm system are screwed for the next decade or so he would still find some reason to blame management like Snitker and call the Braves stupid.

Looking at the situation objectively, the Giants would GLADLY bring Madison Bumgarner back on a one-year deal. Even if they have to pay a bit of a premium for it. He’s 100% getting a QO.

The Braves CAN sign Cole but they WONT EVER SIGN Cole.

Their payroll is really low because almost all of their good players are so young. Mark Melancon is one of the few bad deals on the books for next year.

However THEY WONT SIGN Cole because their Weak Management(From Top to bottom) will come up with every excuse & alternative possible to not do it.

AA will go to a press Conference whining like a little brat throwing a tantrum “BUT I DONT WANNA PAY THE PLAYERS!!!” Then in a Blink of an Eye he turns into every college frat guy ever and starts ranting about how he doesnt want to have to make any long term commitments.

Even without a Budget increase (which they said we would have) they could find the $$ to bid with anyone for him. Especially with Tehran, Keuchel & Donaldson Potentially Departing.

I dont know if there is bad blood with Keuchel & Cole….but he cant hate Keuchel more than any of the Braves Fans I know down here.

I dont know exactly how much the Yankees have to spend. It’s hard to imagine that they’d get Cole tho. I think the Luxury Tax will make that very difficult.

I think he is too loyal to Luke Jackson but if “anyone could take this team to playoffs” why were we picked to finish in 4th place? He has managed 2 teams in a row now that have been projected to be 4th place teams and managed each of them to division championships. That means he’s getting much more out of the players then anyone expected. If he’s that bad and needs to be fired then why did he win manager of the year last season. He is likely to win it again this season. The only reason he wouldn’t is because voters are usually reluctant to give the award to someone 2 years in a row. Taking a projected 4th place team to a division title is manager of the year material. Do you really think Gabe Kapler or Mike Matheny would really have done as well as Snit? Kapler under performs expectations and makes obviously terrible decisions every year. Matheny literally destroys good teams from the inside out.

Great as a coach. One of the best at teaching defense to infielders. Don’t know if I’d say he underperformed winning back-to-back pennants with a strike away twice in one game. Definitely deserves a shot to manage again, but ideally he’d be a highly paid coach on a staff.

You mean the guy who retired?

The guy who said after the season that he will take a month and then determine what he will do in the future. In the interviews he definitely did not sound like a guy that is permanently retired.

Washington was QUITTED (cocaine) and then self-QUITTED (reported sexual assault, admitted extramarital affair).

In a locker room with Hedges, Hosmer and Myers, that’s just what they need, another cancer in the dugout. They need a real jerk who’ll motivate them but who won’t end up in Tijuana on a game day or getting stopped in Clairemont with a stash of drugs (a la Lamar Hoyt and that guy from the Raiders who missed the Super Bowl)

Except that he’s not a cancer in the dugout. His players and the organizations he’s been with absolutely love him. If you’re looking for a saint as a coach, you’ll never find one.

I’m not going to get into the exes and ohhhs, of why the Padres need a Washington or Girardi….I get long-winded when expressing frustration with the Padres. But to those who say, “well Ron is this and that…and he has issues, blah, blah, blah”. I’ll just say this: YOU DO NOT TURN YOUR NOSE UP AT A MAN WHO TOOK A BASEBALL TEAM TO THE WS, BACK TO BACK!”. No…he didn’t get them a ring. But to be one out away from winning, had more to do with Elvis Andrus’s goof, than anything Ron Washington did wrong.

The Padres CANNOT afford to hire anyone less than a man who has DEEP PLAYOFF experience. And Girardi and Washington have that. Bochy is NOT coming back…and I just don’t have a good feeling about Mike Scioscia, for some crazy reason.

Washington does deserve consideration. Being the manager of two AL pennant winners within the last decade helps his case.

As a Braves fan, selfishly, I want him to be in ATL until he retires. But as someone who’s a big fan of his, I hope he gets the opportunity he’s looking for.

Please braves…keep Washington. Not a fit in SD…from fans perspective. However, we might get stuck with him because Maddon and Bochy won’t work for Another Jackass Preller.

Right. Maddon has said the angels are his 1st choice and him theirs. Bochy is RETIRING (don’t know how many times this needs to be said!). But sure, clearly it’s because they won’t work for “Jackass Preller” Good god!

Did you read the articles with interviews of Bochy after the season ended. it does not sound at all like he is retiring. It sounds like he would come back for the right spot if it is offered. He just does not want to go through the rebuild that will be needed in San Francisco. Boch will go fish for a month and then start talking with teams.

“Done Due Diligence”. Meaning they asked around and decided against interviewing him.

Wasn’t Washington a character in the movie Moneyball? Brad Pitt: “Playing first base is not that hard, Scott. Tell him Wash.”
    Ron Washington: “It’s incredibly hard.”
