Tauchman Available For Yankees If Roster Move Needed

By Steve Adams | October 15, 2019 at 4:54pm CDT

It’s only been five weeks since outfielder Mike Tauchman was diagnosed with a Grade 2 calf strain that came with a six- to eight-week recovery timetable, seemingly ending his season. However, general manager Brian Cashman told Joel Sherman of the New York Post prior to today’s Game 3 against the Astros that Tauchman is “healthy end eligible” to return to the roster, should New York need to place Giancarlo Stanton (or anyone else) on the injured list.

Stanton is currently day-to-day with a quadriceps issue and didn’t start either Game 2 or Game 3 of the current series, but he homered in Game 1 and is hitting .300/.467/.600 thus far in a tiny sample of 15 postseason plate appearances. His bat would be a welcome addition against a potent ’Stros pitching staff, of course, but playing shorthanded also does the club no favors. That said, putting Stanton on the injured list is no small decision; should the Yankees do so and then advance to the World Series, Stanton would be ineligible to return. Notably, there’s quite a bit of rain in tomorrow’s forecast in New York, and potential postponement could buy the team some time to further deliberate.

Tauchman, 28, was a godsend for the injury-plagued Yankees in 2019. The 2013 tenth-round pick never got an extended look in the Majors with the Rockies, but he stepped up with a strong .277/.361/.504 batting line with 13 home runs, 18 doubles and a triple in 296 plate appearances. Even if Tauchman isn’t added to the ALCS roster, the Yankees would have the ability to reset their 25-man group between the ALCS and a theoretical World Series berth.

The way Cashman rolled this year, he could resign Refsnyder, and Rob would be the World Series MVP.

Not saying Tachman is an MVP but you haven’t watched baseball this year if you think Tachman is just a AAA player.

3.6 WAR in only 87 games is far above a AAAA player.

Mike Tauchman (over 87 games) accumulated WAR at the same pace as DJ Lemahieu did, and only 8 position players in the AL accumulated WAR at a faster pace over the 2019 season (4 Outfielders : Trout, Judge, Springer, Betts).

Why can’t Stanton return for the World Series if they get there? Isn’t there a 10 day IL? Which would backdate to Monday.

There’s no 10 day IL in the playoffs.

      From mlb.com:

      Postseason roster rules
Teams submit a 25-man roster prior to each round of the postseason comprised of postseason-eligible players. A club may request permission from the Commissioner’s Office to replace a player who is injured during the course of a series, but that player is then ineligible for the rest of that round and the subsequent round, if there is one. A pitcher may be replaced only by another pitcher, and a position player only by another position player.

Teams carry extra players throughout the postseason in the event of injuries, and those players, as well as players on the injured list, can be in the dugout during games, within reason.

Mike Tauchman and Cameron Maybin have very similar offensive numbers. Tauchman offers a LH bat to balance the lineup more. Maybin is faster and better defensively.

Brian Cashman has pulled all the right strings so far.

And there you have it folks Brett Gardner doing nothing in the post season and the best one yet! They continue to BAT HIM 3RD as if anything is going to change. STOP BRINGING BACK THIS GUY HE IS A POST SEASON DUD! I said he was going to bat .155 when it’s all said and done he’s currently at .200.

I watched two first game but when I saw Gardner in the 3 hole I decided not to watch and they lost 4-1.

Keep plugging him in and expect different results!

Hey why stop there? Who else should we get rid of? Let’s see….DJ, Torres and Judge are the only hitters performing well. Let’s forget about what they do over the entire season and let’s focus on these 3 games only. I would say the struggle to score runs has more to do with Cole and Verlander as opposed to hitters “not being good”.

Dude you are obsessed with Gardner. You seriously make me wonder if you guys had any real world interactions? Stole your girl? Took your spot on the varsity team? Denied you an autograph. I won’t go into the “dark side” about other possibilities. Seek help.

This is my point and no matter how many times I say it and it may bother some people. No matter what nothing will change I don’t give a rats bottom what he did during the season. Gardner is a complete DUD DUDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD and what do the Yankees do bat him third MF THIRD! If you don’t sign this guy the lineup gets better and you won’t have this problem but for some ODD REEASONNNNNNNNNNN they keep bringing him back and expecting different results in the PS.

I BET you $100 BUCKS him batting third is OVER when he should have never batted third! If I’m wrong the man will bat third!

Say what you want I hope he signs with another team do you know why………………..I’ll say it once again Yankees won’t win another WS until CC and Gardner are OFF this team. Book it write in down I don’t care what you do. When I tell you to listen to me trust me. I been saying this for YEARS and they are expecting different results.

BRETT GARDNER IS THE WORST COME POST SEASON GET RID OF HIM AND YOU’LL WIN A WS~!

I don’t know the reason why Gardner is batting third and I’m not even arguing that he should be there. However, Gardner doesn’t pencil himself into the lineup.. Boone/Cashman do that. But letting 3 games determine whether or not he should be brought back vs looking at the full season is absurd.

Dude you are insane. First off, CC’s retiring and he’s likely not to start a single game in the post-season so I have no idea why you keep bringing this up.

As for Gardner. You insist that somehow he’s going to cost the team a title. You do realize that he had a 3.6 WAR tied for 3rd with Gleyber Torres right? Gardner has had a very good year and has played great defense as well. He’s the back up CF and one of few lefty bats in the lineup. With all the other higher paid players struggling as well it just sounds odd that you continue to act like the team’s struggle are on his shoulders. Kick rocks dude.

Gardner should not be batting 3rd or even starting. That is the honest answer period.

People like south beach and that moron fits just have the man crush on Cashman.

The Yanks are fighting an uphill battle they didn’t need to fight because Cashman prioritizes the pen and the long ball over the rotation and grinders (DJ, Torres and Judge the exceptions). Of the 300 dingers they hit how many were against the 2 quad A teams of the Al East? 61 or 20% of the total against the O’s……another 33 against Jays, so 94/306 or 31% against 2 of the worst teams., yet they only played 23% of their games against those teams.

also- check who’s pen had better regular season numbers… go for it.

it’s going to take a miracle, but cash is a genius.

The elephant in the room or better yet bullpen CC is needlessly taking up a roster spot. Watch with the way they’re taxing this bullpen they throw him out there to give up a big bomb, or two. Cashman built a predominately right handed lumbering lineup to try and take advantage of the dimensions in Yankee stadium, but that means nothing without home field.
On a different note, the Yankees are not signing Cole this winter..BANK IT!

Louie you’ve been right all season long. Look what happened with CC in game 4, is anybody surprised? Why are they wasting roster spots on an often injured outfielder, and on a over the hill over weight gimp pitcher. This had disaster written all over it. I wonder if the Cashman fan boys will want them to bring Gardner back. SBB, and others (we know who you are) are now on the clock.

I find it funny people said Brett Gardner is ONLY gonna be a 4th outfielder he’s playing every day in the PS.

Your better off sitting him and putting Hick in really cuz if I remember correctly Gardner was supposed to be a 4 outfielder!

Many of you wanna talk about WAR++ tell me that Brett Gardners WAR is in the Post season!

It will never change it hasn’t changed since he’s been on the team.

Get him outta the lineup and when the season is over let him SIGN ELSEWHERE
