Cubs To Hire Chris Young As Bullpen Coach

By Jeff Todd | November 7, 2019 at 9:13am CDT

The Cubs will hire Chris Young as their next bullpen coach, according to Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic (via Twitter). He’ll take over for departing long-time pen leader Lester Strode.

This makes for a notable hire under new skipper David Ross. Young — no, not the former MLB pitcher and certainly not the former outfielder — just wrapped up his brief time as the Phillies pitching coach.

While his tenure in Philly didn’t turn out as hoped, Young’s perspective on the game remains highly valuable. He’s an analytically oriented presence who has had some ups and downs in his efforts to transition to a uniformed role. It remains to be seen who’ll take the pitching coach job in Chicago, but the Cubs obviously feel they can structure a productive combination of voices to guide the team’s staff.

Was Young the scapegoat for the Phillies not solidifying their rotation?

“Scapegoat” implies he wasn’t to blame. Kranitz got more out of basically the same guys. Basically the entire staff regressed under Young.

The Phillies staff and bullpen was garbage. Hiring a new coach won’t change that.

They actually built one of the best bullpens in the league on paper, but injuries destroyed it.

Expectations always run high in Philly when they get household names. What they don’t appreciate is that most of these are not young. Heck many of them aren’t even in their prime anymore. Focus on the talent, not whether widely known or not, and you’re better off.

Hate to break it to you, but “scapegoat” literally means person or people who get all the blame for wrongdoing or failure.

CubsReds Saints you should have quit when you were ahead. That is not what scapegoat means. In the real world scapegoat means- One that bears the blame for others. Literally. Cub fans.

Theo should have hired Ross as the bullpen coach and Young as the manager. What’s the difference? It’s like Theo isn’t Theo anymore. He has morphed into Opposite Theo. He has two years left on his deal and it appears he is going backwards to leave the team the way he found it when he got here. Go-Go White Sox

CubsReds Saints. I’m not ignorant. I don’t lack knowledge or intelligence. I am surprised at Cub fan reaction to the Ross hire. When the Sox hired Ventura I was furious. Cub fans are like sheep.

Tycobb, all fans are like sheep is an ignorant statement. An entire fan base cannot be “like sheep”. I don’t enough about him to like or dislike. For some reason, I don’t particularly like it. I’m far more plugged in than your average fan. You said, “ hire Ross as bullpen coach and Young as manager.” Really?

Makes perfect sense to hire Ross as manager. He’s well respected in the league and the clubhouse, he’s a very knowledgeable baseball guy. He’s not a pushover and will hold players accountable (lacking with Maddon). And he’s open minded enough to take suggestions from the front office on analytics, but strong enough to give his opinion right back.

What’s not to like? That he’s inexperienced as a first time manager? It seems like that’s not a problem anymore. Cora, Roberts, Boone, etc, all have had recent success as first year, former players, hired by big market teams.

CubsRedsSaints. I didn’t say all fans follow like sheep, I said Cub fans follow like sheep. the point is both hires are fails and it wouldn’t make a difference who held either job. As for following like sheep, I’ve heard zero negative or any outcry about the Ross hire. In Dusty we trusty.

Nah, tycobb is right. cubs fans are more like groupies. They rarely question team performance or decisions made by the front office. Sox fans love Ventura, but hated the fact he had no managing experience. Reinsdorf values loyalty over competence (GarPax, Ken Williams), so we’re naturally cynical of moves like that. cubs fans are way too trusting and optimistic about a franchise that has literally done nothing since the T-model Ford was christened.

ChiSox—not sure if your T-model Ford christened statement is an accident or just humorously coincidental. Of all crazy things—–1908!!! So since the christening—both the Cubs and Sox have exactly two championships each. I don’t give you enough credit most of time, but your analogy was very well played.

everyone who returned this year regressed until they stopped doing what Young said. Nola and Eflin both said that they eventually stopped listening, and both pitched better thereafter.

Pretty much a non-event now a days…Strode probably was tired of traveling at 61 yrs. old and took an office job. Bullpen coach just manages relievers work out sessions everything else is phoned down to the pitching coach by some analytics guru up in the booth on who to bring in.
