Red Sox Acquire Austin Brice, Outright Marco Hernandez

By Jeff Todd | January 16, 2020 at 4:22pm CDT

TODAY: Hernandez has been outrighted to Triple-A Pawtucket after clearing waivers, the Red Sox announced.

JANUARY 10: The Red Sox have acquired righty Austin Brice from the Marlins, per club announcements. Minor-league infielder Angeudis Santos is headed to Miami in return. The Boston organization designate infielder Marco Hernandez for assignment to create roster space.

Brice was recently designated by the Marlins, making him the latest Miami relief arm to be cut loose. With today’s news, he becomes the latest to land on his feet. On occasion, a rebuilding team cuts loose a pre-arb player that ends up on another 40-man roster. But it’s notable that it has happened four times this winter for the Marlins.

The 27-year-old righty did end his 2019 season with some arm woes. And he wasn’t exactly a dominant hurler by measure of his peripheral numbers. But he was able to contribute 44 2/3 frames of 3.43 ERA pitching on the year. He has multiple serviceable pitches that he has tinkered with over the years; perhaps the Red Sox feel they can extract something with a slightly different mix.

How can Hernandez be let go when they have duds like Reyes on the 40 man, Poyner, Weber and that goober they took in the rule5 that will never be anything but a career miLB player in Arauz.. hernandez was a fair utility player and someone will grab him up. This is sad.

Peraza is slated as the everyday 2b. Not depth/utility.

Even a best case scenario you won’t see pedey till june, and even then it’s probably a ramp up. Much as I love the grit he has, I’m taking anything he has to give as a pleasant surprise.

CHAVIS will get a shot at 2b at bats in ST I wouldn’t be surprised if he wins the job and Peraza is super utility bum

Peraza if he is slated to start which I don’t believe will lose that slot in spring training. I do believe with no known offers other teams expect Holt to return to Boston.

I agree, I hope he can at least go out on at least some favorable terms as a part-time player or something, I’m 52 and he’s one of my favorite Red Sox ever

Until otherwise proven wrong (which at least at home is usually the case), I still see Brock Holt in the Sox starting line up on opening day. Marco is still in the organization and unlike Castillo can easily get called up by placing him again on the 40 man roster. Would love to see the team get so far under the cap 5hat Rusney could actually get a chance.

Santos had the weirdest stat line last year. He only struck out 57 times, but he drew 55 walks and only had 32 hits. I can’t say I’ve ever seen anything like that before.

That’s cool. .384 obp! He’s gotta be close to the top of the league in pitches per PA.

He sounds like your typical 9 hitter in a Sunday league; just goes up there and takes pitches trying to get a walk or until they have to swing because they have two strikes. It results in lots of walks and strikeouts and few hits.

It also sounds like a 17 year old who might have a good eye at the plate but isn’t strong enough to hit well yet. 18 years old and 6’1 165 (according to baseball-reference) is a pretty good size to work with.

Why would the Marlins have any interest in Hernandez? They needed to clear a 40 man spot, and they did. Seems pretty easy to see that well the Marlins have little use for Hernandez, especially since Berti can do what Hernandez does. As to why they took a flyer, well who knows what they saw.

Marco will likely end up like Travis and invited to spring training as a non-roster player once he clears waivers.

Let’s face it; neither Hernandez or Brice are going to move the needle all too much for this team, but if the Sox need help anywhere, it’s on the mound so this is a decent gamble to take by Bloom. I liked Hernandez as well, but he is a 0 to 0.5 WAR player (at best) and with their $3M deal for Peraza and Lin already on the roster, Hernandez really isn’t needed on this team. Hopefully Marco can latch on to a team like KC, Miami, etc..where he can get more playing time. I wish him all the best. It’s nice to see Bloom make an actual move this off season!

i mean its not like you can’t have both on the team. Arauz will be at best a wasted 26 man spot this year, might as well boot him.

Very true, but for Bloom to make a Rule 5 selection at all, he must see something in Arauz he really likes. Hopefully his evaluation is correct and the kid can latch on as a pinch runner and emergency fill in. You are correct in that Hernandez is currently better than Arauz today but there must be some sort of lottery ticket potential here if Chaim selected him in the first place.

Lin has been a disappointment since his surprise beginning. I realize his sample size is still small but if healthy, Marco seems to have a higher ceiling and if the team as I expect eventually brings back Holt, Lin’s ability to play in the outfield as a last resort is minimized.

Have pulled for Lin since he was signed as an IFA kid years ago, but believe Chatham may have advantage over him in most regards with 3 Options and better hitter, equal defender in the IF positions. Only real difference is Lin can play a cpl OF positions in a pinch and runs better. Shame, but truth of it.

I was actually surprised that Miami DFA’d Brice to begin with. He set career best marks in appearances, innings pitched, ERA (sub 3.50) and strikeouts. Why did they let him go? I know they are in full rebuild mold but this kid is only 28 years old so maybe he has some additional warts that his stats don’t show? His FIP of 4.87 isn’t all too inspiring but he seems to be a decent, average BP pitcher who can give you 3-6 outs in a game without incurring too much damage, and the Sox only had to give up a fringe prospect for a chance at a decent return.

What direction are the Red Sox going? No large trade or any attempt to get under the luxury tax or going for it again. Only minor acquisitions. Is Bloom chasing his tail?

I’m guessing that Boston’s level of inaction so far is not for a lack of trying. It’s no secret that the Sox have been trying to trade Price or Eovaldi all season; they just can’t find any takers who can help them get where they want to be. They also want to trade JBJ as well.

Once the final 3 big FA’s sign in Donaldson, Castellanos and Ozuna, teams should have a full picture of their divisional opponents and what they feel they need to be competitive. This is where the trade market should heat up and hopefully we’ll see Boston be active then. Marte is holding up a JBJ deal and Alex Wood and potentially even Walker may need to sign before they can find a trade partner for Price. They could very well end up waiting until after spring training starts before any substantial trades are made.

Bloom is not going to just give those pitchers away, n I think most teams wanna fleece the RS instead trading to benefit both teams.
