Reds To Sign Pedro Strop

By Connor Byrne | January 30, 2020 at 1:16pm CDT

The Reds have agreed to a one-year, $1.825MM deal with free-agent reliever Pedro Strop, according to Hector Gomez of Deportivo Z 101 (Twitter link). The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal adds that incentives can push the value of the deal, which is still pending a physical, up to $3.5MM. Strop is represented by the Movement Management Group.

It’s surprising that the Reds are coming away with Strop, who was reportedly deciding between the Marlins and Rangers as of last week. Nevertheless, it’s the latest strike in free agency for Cincinnati, a team clearly bent on returning to contention after a six-year drought. The Reds rank near the top of the National League in offseason spending via the open market, and Strop will go down as the second free agent they’ve pilfered from the division-rival Cubs. They took outfielder Nick Castellanos from Chicago earlier this week, though he cost far more money ($64MM) than Strop will collect.

While the Reds have been aggressive in bettering their roster this winter, they haven’t been all that active in upgrading a bullpen that was middle of the pack last season. They’re returning some quality holdovers – Raisel Iglesias, Michael Lorenzen, Amir Garrett and Robert Stephenson, to name a few – and the hope is Strop will accompany them as a key late-game option for the club in 2020.

The right-handed Strop, 34, has been quietly terrific over the past several years. Dating back to his 2011 breakout with the Rangers and Orioles, Strop has combined for a 3.00 ERA/3.32 FIP with 9.82 K/9, 3.89 BB/9 and a 54.8 percent groundball rate across 483 2/3 innings. He was mostly excellent with the Cubs from 2013-19, including during their championship drought-breaking 2016 campaign, but fell on hard times last season.

A hamstring injury limiting Strop to 41 2/3 innings, his fewest since 2011, and he only managed a 4.97 ERA/4.53 FIP when he was healthy enough to pitch. He also saw his average fastball velocity dip from 95.1 mph the previous season to 93.6 mph. Despite the drop in heat, Strop did strike out 10.58 batters per nine and induce grounders at a 52.9 percent clip; however, he struggled with control and home runs. Strop walked 4.32 hitters per nine and yielded homers on a career-worst 18.8 percent of fly balls, though he was hardly alone in surrendering more dingers than usual during the most HR-friendly season in the history of the sport.

The Reds are, of course, hoping Strop’s HR-FB rate bounces back toward his career mean of 10.1 percent. Regardless, he’s the latest of MLBTR’s top 50 free agents they’ve added. The club has now come away with five players from that list this offseason. And now that Strop’s coming off the board, Yasiel Puig (an ex-Red) and Brock Holt are the last ones standing.

Was hoping the Jays would grab him on a buy low deal.

At this price he’s a nice pickup for the Reds.

Guaranteed the Reds, with all of their winter moves, will dethrone the “Stand Pat” Cardinals as NL Central Champions in 2020!!
Not that I hate the Cardinals, especially their franchise history. But—— just to beat and defeat the Cardinals Arrogant, Know it all, Lying John Mozeliak, President of Cards baseball operations, will be wonderful !!!! Anyone who can make a public statement that the Cardinals don’t need to do anything to win the Central in 2020—needs to have those words crammed back down his throat!!!!

I think their fans are way overdue for a solid team. But as a Cub fan, I”m dubious about Strop. There’s a reason, besides money, they didn’t bring him back. His numbers weren’t bad, but he was notorious for throwing a fat pitch in crucial moments.

I hope your right. I could never understand why they grabbed a 28 year old outfielder anyway. Should have been sent back after the Castellanos signing. He has zero shot of making this team, let alone keeping him on the active roster all year. I’m excited about this years team. It seems like Castellini told them they have X amount of dollars to spend this off-season and they are hell bent on spending every dime of it. My biggest worry is David Bell! I have no problem giving him a second year, but I really hope he learned some lessons from last year.

          per wiki (never know)
The selecting team may, at any time, waive the Rule 5 draftee
So, I do not think they have to keep him until ST.
They could also trade him for a used baseball at anytime.

Payton / Schebler / Jankowski are all fighting for the 26th spot 3 left handed hitting OF who can play in all 3 spots. Jankowski has an option, I think they really like Payton, so Schebler is the correct answer, unless it isn’t

Hoping for a “bounceback” for a 35 year old is kind of rough. And the HR rate (especially in the Smallpark) is a bit concerning.

OTOH, the price is more than right; Strop has been dominating in the past. Seems to be a good deal. The Reds are definitely in it.

Payton or Shebler will probably get the DFA.
Now, get Brock Holt. A much better defender and batter than Farmer or Van Meter. They alos have options so you can stash them away.

If you recall, Garrett was out for awhile due to his fighting suspension. That left the Reds with no LH RP’s.

Connor, believe me, Strop eas not good last year. And don’t even think about closing out games with him. Stats don’t always tell the right story with relievers because any inherited runners that score while they are in do not count against them and that happened with this bum quite often. As a Cubs fan I’m happy to see him go.

Way to acquire out of luxury! Reds are all in.

Iglesias is the closer and is primed to bounce back. Lorenzen is in his prime coming off his best season and Garrett is a premier lefty coming out of the pen. No pressure on Strop- he’s a great bounce back candidate.

Wishing Pedro all the best. Even though he’s with a division rival. If healthy, he will find a nice bounce back this year. He had some solid years with the Cubs. When you look at his overall body work I believe he had a successful run with he Cubs. He did battle through some injuries in 2019 and 2018 as well. That likely led to some of his numbers to take a down turn. The Reds are going to give a lot of teams trouble this season.

Man, I don’t know how we’ll compete. We only have the reigning NL MVP, two top-10 Cy Young votegetters, and a squad that’s won 302 games and gone to two World Series in the last three years. But yeah, Strop puts the Reds over the top.

Reds pitching is stacked all around. With that rotation and the ability to hand the ball to Strop, Garrett and Iglesias in the 7th 8th and 9th… on paper that’s awfully strong.

Like the Strop deal. Love the minor league signings of Nate Jones & Jessie Biddle. With some health & a couple of DJ’s magic tweaks, bullpen could be substantially improved

He didn’t “literally” call him a thug. It’s a uniform and should be woken properly when on the field. But it’s not the most important either. Plus, you have no idea what race he is, smart-guy.

For those of you calling him a racist, a hat has absolutely nothing with race. To say it illustrates just how ignorant and willing to devolve to baseless accusations people are. He didn’t call him a thug; businesses have dress codes for reasons. Even if he did? You know the adage, dress like a thug………

Go through real racism then you know what it is. Taking statements out of context to fit your hate-seeking narrative is unacceptable and immature. Please stop insulting everyone and taking away from real racists by lumping everyone into that group.

And to Strop: Fix your hat!

Strop is a fine addition at that price. He as an added bonus incentives as well so that should help. Maybe a new pitching coach or change of scenery could help or his health is 100%. Even if he should somehow bomb there are more than enough options to replace him so I reserve judgment till I see what’s going to be.
