Astros Sign Jared Hughes

By Steve Adams | February 18, 2020 at 12:45pm CDT

FEBRUARY 18: Hughes would earn $1.5MM in the majors and has a March 18th opt-out opportunity, Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets.

FEBRUARY 17: The Astros have signed right-handed reliever Jared Hughes to a minor league contract and invited him to Major League Spring Training, per Jake Kaplan of The Athletic (Twitter link). He’s repped by ISE Baseball.

Hughes, 34, pitched to a 4.04 ERA with 6.8 K/9, 3.4 BB/9, 1.64 HR/9 and a hefty 59.2 percent ground-ball rate in 71 1/3 innings between the Reds and Phillies in 2019. That ERA was his highest since way back in 2013, as Hughes has quietly racked up sharp bottom-line results for the Pirates, Brewers and Reds for much of the past decade.

From 2014-18, Hughes worked to a combined 2.41 ERA between those three NL Central foes. He totaled 329 innings in that time, but his lack of missed bats (5.8 K/9, 15.9 percent strikeout rate) seemingly limited his appeal. The Pirates released Hughes at the end of Spring Training in 2017, and after quickly signing with the Brewers, Hughes was non-tendered the following offseason. He posted nearly identical ERAs of 3.02 and 3.03 in each of the two seasons prior to being cut loose.

Hughes has never thrown particularly hard in the first place, but the 91.4 mph average on his sinker in 2019 was still a career-low. The spin on that sinker has been lower than virtually any other heater in the game (first percentile in ’18, second percentile in ’19), which is a good thing for sinkers (as opposed to with four-seamers, where a high spin rate is optimal). As such, it’s no surprise to see that Hughes has been a ground-ball machine throughout his career (61.5 percent). That should bode well for a team that boasts a quality group of defensive infielders in Alex Bregman, Carlos Correa, Jose Altuve and Yuli Gurriel. He’ll need to earn a spot in the bullpen first, of course, but there are enough inexperienced arms in the ’pen mix to think that Hughes will have a solid shot at making the club with a good spring effort.

ok grandpa but “durr muh trash cans” just gets annoying after a while no matter what team you’re on, unless you just really like, I don’t know, Adam Sandler movies. His point wasn’t that they’re not trash it’s just that you don’t have to leave lame zingers on every post about the Astros. If you think that you’re some brave fighter against cheating by doing that then you need a hobby lol

        Gotham…

Bonds and Clemens are getting around 60% of the Hall of Fame vote. And of course there are some, if not most, teams who don’t care if players have used PEDs. Most people don’t hold cheaters accountable,

Honestly, people should be making more noise. Because we don’t, we have the game that we deserve. Demanding better is what we can do about it.

It wasn’t a joke, it was a sarcastic comment. Sarcasm is not meant to make you laugh, it’s meant to mock, demean and all around express a refusal to take someone seriously, or to treat them with respect.

And it isn’t getting old. It’s the correct attitude to have. The Astros should not be starting the season on even footing with the other 29 teams, this year. It’s a disgrace that they are, and we should all disrupt any attempts to treat them as just another baseball team. Comments like the one above are an excellent way to do so. They take no effort, and achieve the goal perfectly.

Is it fair to say that he’s one of the most underrated relievers of the past decade or so? Over 500 innings with an ERA of 2.88 is pretty impressive. He’s been a serious bargain considering that he’s only (relative to being a pro baseball player lol) made just less than 9.5 million dollars in his career.

I am a fellow Pirates fan and it’s nice to see Hughes still around. He won’t get many strike outs, but he will help keep balls in the park and give a chance for a DP when needed. I thought he was always underrated reliever and still believe he was one of the anchors in the pen for the Pirates during their successful seasons. I met him a few times and thought he was a real stand up, down to earth guy.

Astros are taking the brunt of the heat. Where is the disgust with the Yankees and Red Sox who were caught doing precisely the same thing? At least 8 of the 30 teams had sign stealing schemes associated with technology. Probably more. Baseball has been stealing signs for a hundred years. MLB put tech right next to the dugout and then didn’t expect anyone to use it? I agree this isn’t good for baseball but it was a widespread league problem that all the contenders participated in. And remember – by the commissioner’s report this had stopped within the 2018 season.

Yankees were accused by Boston. They were investigated. The Commissioner found that the accusation had “no merit.” The NYY were fined for having a phone. No camera. No sign stealing.

Boston on the other hand was fined for stealing signs.

Can we please get this straight and learn to make the simple distinctions? Sheesh!

As for your claim of 8 of 30 teams stealing signs, please do share your wealth of non-existent evidence.

Besides the whole drama queen movie thing at the end, steroids were indeed not individual, as the Mitchell Report showed us. Those dozens of players did not magically stumble on dealers on their own. It gives a competitive edge no matter the mechanism.

And you should already see with the way other teams are eager to scoop up Astros players that they are apparently not as offended by this as Mike Trout is.

If your claim is true then the Astros player caught using PEDs yesterday must have come from a team of PED users since they cluster in herds as you suggest. Not intuitive to me. Drug users tend to be in small numbers in the shadows. Like Clemens convincing Pettite in Houston. People who are using suggest the drugs to others very selectively and often they are turned down. On a team of 25 players, even its heyday, PED use was a small fraction of the whole. Maybe 0-4 players. And that was most teams. But this notion that PEDs are marketed and dispensed en masse within a team is totally fabricated nutso fantasy. There were like 10 Yankees players mentioned in the Mitchell Report. Most of them were only on the team 1-3 years. At any particular time maybe 3-4 were on the team. Not all of them were doing PEDs every year they were on the team. Again, 0-4 players any given year is a reasonable estimate. Not a whole team of PED users as you suggest. Very different from having a whole team stealing signs. Still egregious, but a very different impact. Especially since all teams were doing PEDs at the time.

it’s like how child abusers go out and loudly denounce child abusers. To the simpletons in society (and there are MANY), these pronouncements are taken as proof that the person issuing them couldn’t possibly ever abuse a child.

Trout and Markakis aren’t the only players concerned about what the discovery phase in the ongoing Astros lawsuits will turn up. 60+ interviews conducted by Manfred’s team turned up dirt on many players, not all of them Astros.

Interesting how you have this inside information. Please do share and cite your sources from the actual Commissioner’s report, not some Astros reddit board. Enquiring minds want to know. Forgive me for saying this sounds like more wild, unfounded accusations by Astros fans to deflect attention from the Astros, but I’m open to being persuaded otherwise.

Darkside If you’re serious, yes the Astros will be able to pull off a trade deadline deal this year…if they make the best offer. No competent GM is gonna refuse to trade with them cause of this to make some moral point. If a deal with the Astros is best for their team they will do it.

Even when it’s all said and done and the dust settles there’s not very many baseball fans that would not take any of these players on their team

I’ve followed the Houston baseball team(s) since their expansion year of 1962. I’m currently a Texas Rangers STH, bit still follow the Astros also. I am appalled by the sign stealing scandal, but in the big scheme of life, there are a lot more important life events for me to worry about than it. I have resisted commenting on this subject, but will just offer one bit of advice that was taught to me many years ago, “If they can live with it, I can live without it”. Baseball, after all is not the sport it was 50 years ago. I know many won’t take my advice to, Move On, but believe me, there are much greater things in life to be concerned about.

Like losing your job or $$$$$ in contract value because the guys you compete against are a bunch of cheating a-holes?

Can you show empirical data that shows anyone lost $$$$ in contract value? Heck if that’s the case the Rangers shelled Gerrit Cole during a game last season….let’s see, don’t think he lost any $$$$$ in contract value. Guy form Blue Jays who is suing Astros for loss of $$$ is ridiculous. He only pitched a couple innings of one game against Astros. There is no MLB team that will release or send down a good pitcher due to one outing

Two things. Cole is a pitcher. Pitchers are going to get a different look from position players in a sign stealing scandal. Second, Cole was not an Astro in 2017. Now many people suspect the Astros of stealing signs in 2018 and 2019, but 2017 is the main target and there were no doubt GM’s who considered that fact when acquiring a pitcher from the Astros.

The fact that the Crapstros can live with it is the problem they seem to not even care about what they’ve done.

I heard a documentary has been greenlit by HBO about the Astros cheating scandal called Bang The Can Slowly. DiNero and Michael Moriarty will narrate.

Hughes is about as nice a guy with character as there is in baseball. I’m sure the Astros have signed him as much for his character as his stuff.

Depends on what other offers he got. Supposedly this was the best and better than others to make the hassle worth it. Who knows? Maybe he wasn’t thinking about the hassle at all. Maybe he didn’t get any other offers. Maybe he has family in the area. It could be any number of factors. Being involved in the scandal is only one factor and who knows how much an individual player looking for a job even thinks about it. Some may be oblivious.

What a difference a year makes. A year ago any player would love to be part of the Astros. Now they’re going to be the scourge of baseball at least until the booing gets old.

Isn’t this the same guy who asked for his earned runs to be nullified and void vs the Astros?
