Dodgers Designate Tyler White, Kyle Garlick

By Connor Byrne | February 10, 2020 at 9:26pm CDT

The Dodgers have designated first baseman Tyler White and outfielder Kyle Garlick for assignment, Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register was among those to report. These moves come in the wake of Los Angeles’ acquisitions of Mookie Betts and David Price from Boston, leaving the Dodgers’ 40-man roster at capacity.

The 29-year-old White didn’t last long on the Dodgers’ 40-man. They acquired White last July from the Astros, with whom he was once a top-100 prospect. White posted a strong .276/.354/.533 line in 237 plate appearances in 2018, but he was unable to approach that production last year between Houston and Los Angeles. He combined for a .208/.308/.304 line in 279 trips to the plate, and injury issues helped limit White to a meager 26 PA as a Dodger.

Garlick, 28, was far more successful than White last season. A 28th-round pick back in 2015, Garlick showed well in his brief MLB debut in 2019, slashing .250/.321/.521 with three homers in 51 trips to the plate. He saw time in both outfield corners during that stint. Garlick spent the majority of the year in Triple-A ball, where he was excellent. His .314/.382/.675 showing (23 HRs) in 304 PA was 45 percent better than the league-average line, per FanGraphs’ wRC+ metric.

Garlick still has two minor league options left, so perhaps some other team will take a chance on him via trade or waivers. White’s out of options, so he’d have to stick on an acquiring club’s 26-man roster or head to the waiver wire.

Clepto: Big Glove seems like a friendly person, which tends to make for a better colleague than someone who snipes at others on a baseball thread. And after all, this is a baseball thread, not a client’s account or the specs for a bridge.

Tyler White surprised all by winning a roster spot & becoming Opening Day 1B out of Spring Training in 2016… but he raked his way through the minors. This predates everything.

He can hit. He has a weight problem. It has fluctuated *wildly* and he showed up in 2019 as a 57 sacks of potatoes.

I’m not sure why the Dodgers wanted White in the first place, with all the other talent in that lineup and on the bench. Now he can go play in a beer softball league where it looks like he would fit in.

Tyler White plays every IF position and LF, so there’s a chance he gets claimed. I can see how he might improve, say, the Orioles. He would probably be more interesting if he had more pronounced splits, because he’s clearly not an everyday player. But the versatility is good.

Garlick is an interesting platoon bat with dramatic splits. He also has options. Speculatively, a team like the Indians could pick him up with the intention of stashing him in AAA as a cheap platoon option. The Indians could use him as a platoon OF with either Tyler Naquin or Daniel Johnson later in the year once Naquin is healthy and/or Johnson is called up/past the service time considerations.

That’s a weird thing to say, and highly inaccurate. It was reported a couple of months ago the Dodgers and White addressed a thyroid issue that had been found and ignore by the Astros. Once addressed he looked significantly smaller and pretty much in shape. Funny how that works.

He is no longer 225. So…… yes. Maybe he is slim now, because he addressed the clear medical issue, just saying.

Let me help you, so you dont remain misinformed by White’s victim-speech. Right about the time Jeff Luhnow traded JD Davis for dog food, Tyler was lounging like the Nurse Shark he is at Hearthstone CC, drinking plenty of beer and playing golf. Meanwhile, the Astros did not know this, nor did they tell anyone they were planning on manipulating with Super Two, the eventual unanimous ROY, Yordan Alvarez. Of course anyone who saw both of these players at Spring Training would know this. But even Fangraphs ranked Yordan #6 in our system — nobody seemed to be paying attention. So, basically, White got the opportunity of a lifetime, and he stayed fat. Then blamed the Astros for it. Weak sauce. I predicted he’d be out of baseball soon after his trade.. He’s a serviceable 1B, sub-par everywhere else.

I know things happen and people talk all the time, but honestly if u dont personally know tyler like some then u have no right to talk or say if he wanted it bad enough. He for sure wants it but cant do anything about injuries and as far as wanting to make it and play in MLB he would have played baseball for ANY TEAM, ANYWHERE and he would play for free as long as he just got to play baseball. He graduated at Chase High here in Noth Carolina and didnt even get a college scholarship and walked on at Western Carolina University and had to tryout and dominated and was then drafted by astros in I believe it was 33rd round and worked his ass off, so yes I do regret ur smartass comment about “if he wanted it bad enough”. What round was You drafted in and how far did you make in baseball??

Taylor has more usable tools than Pederson. Not as talented as Kike but can hit for a higher average. Peterson is the logical odd man out. He was considered a good center fielder when he came up. It would be good if he regained that.

I’d like to see pederson and Pollick share left field, though that would be an expensive tandem, Pederson lacks the versatility of Taylor or Hernandez (at least he isn’t playing 1st base anytime soon. It was a real bad time and place for an OFer to have to learn it though) and is the highest priced of the three. We also don’t know if 30 plus is the new HR bar or a fluke.

I’d guess he probably won’t make it to the AL since every NL team gets a chance first. However, it might be a smart move for the Dodgers to trade him to one of those teams for a nominal prospect if they think the Giants might claim him. Just because he’s DFA’d doesn’t mean he’s necessarily on waivers yet.
