The Dodgers have designated first baseman Tyler White and outfielder Kyle Garlick for assignment, Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register was among those to report. These moves come in the wake of Los Angeles’ acquisitions of Mookie Betts and David Price from Boston, leaving the Dodgers’ 40-man roster at capacity.
The 29-year-old White didn’t last long on the Dodgers’ 40-man. They acquired White last July from the Astros, with whom he was once a top-100 prospect. White posted a strong .276/.354/.533 line in 237 plate appearances in 2018, but he was unable to approach that production last year between Houston and Los Angeles. He combined for a .208/.308/.304 line in 279 trips to the plate, and injury issues helped limit White to a meager 26 PA as a Dodger.
Garlick, 28, was far more successful than White last season. A 28th-round pick back in 2015, Garlick showed well in his brief MLB debut in 2019, slashing .250/.321/.521 with three homers in 51 trips to the plate. He saw time in both outfield corners during that stint. Garlick spent the majority of the year in Triple-A ball, where he was excellent. His .314/.382/.675 showing (23 HRs) in 304 PA was 45 percent better than the league-average line, per FanGraphs’ wRC+ metric.
Garlick still has two minor league options left, so perhaps some other team will take a chance on him via trade or waivers. White’s out of options, so he’d have to stick on an acquiring club’s 26-man roster or head to the waiver wire.
Cave
Tyler White for sure is gone/claimed, Garlick I’m not too sure about.
fred-3
How can you claim Whitw? His best years by far were when the Astros cheated
Cave
Well, he at least gets released. I don’t see him staying.
Big glove502
I hope the Giants are in on garlick. they can have discounts on the garlic fries while he’s pitching.
fred-3
Garlick is an OFer
Big glove502

was reading about whites pitching stats before posting.
alejandro 3
White doesn’t pitch either…
gmenfan
They already had Mike Leake. They’re cornering the onion family.
Big glove502
I botched the whole thing. I looked up Sean white. and wondered why he hadn’t pitched in like 9 years
agentx
He’s been snowboarding much more than pitching lately.
chocoemo
To be fair, he HAS pitched in blowout games before.
humphrey x boegarts
If Zaidi refuses to claim garlick he may well be a vampire
Jim Emmons
Clever
Chief Two Hands
But who will buy them? Certainly not the fair weather Giants fans who don’t show up unless the Giants are winning

Big Glove: sounds like you do excellent and accurate work at your job, if you even have a job.
Let this be a lesson for you. Type last, read first…..thoroughly.
MWeller77
Clepto: Big Glove seems like a friendly person, which tends to make for a better colleague than someone who snipes at others on a baseball thread. And after all, this is a baseball thread, not a client’s account or the specs for a bridge.
That comment was unnecessary and rude. Keep the stadium food puns coming, Big G.
clepto
MWhite: mediocrity accepts mediocrity. So, now we know where you are, too. But you have yourself a safe and blessed day and may all the people you meet be friendly and kind and swell.
yogineely
Just like we know you get your life lessons off of inspirational posters.
MWeller77
Whatever, Clepto. It’s sad that you think you need to bully people on a baseball thread in your pursuit of excellence or whatever it is you think you’re doing
paddyo furnichuh
Are you going for a record on wrong name references?
danielking
Tyler White surprised all by winning a roster spot & becoming Opening Day 1B out of Spring Training in 2016… but he raked his way through the minors. This predates everything.
He can hit. He has a weight problem. It has fluctuated *wildly* and he showed up in 2019 as a 57 sacks of potatoes.
Astros2333
False. His best year was his rookie year and he wasn’t on the 2017 WS roster.
derail76
He doesn’t have a weight problem, he has a thyroid issue, that the Dodgers worked through. He lost a ton of weight this off season.
Buzzed Capra
I’m not sure why the Dodgers wanted White in the first place, with all the other talent in that lineup and on the bench. Now he can go play in a beer softball league where it looks like he would fit in.
Donkatsu
Angels will claim Kyle Garlick
steelehere83
I feel like Farhan Zaidi will. Typical move of his to pick up a player he draft while in LA who also happens to have two option years left.
rangers92
Redsox will pick up Garlick and he will go on to put up 2.5 WAR for the them next year as their 4th outfielder
They will also pick up Tyler White to platoon with Moreland lol
Taijuan Walkers too
DirtyWater04
Can I get a hit of whatever you’re smoking because I could really use it now that the Mookie trade is official.
AndreTheGiantKiller
Garlick probably gets claimed. I could see White passing through and coming back on a minor league deal
ancient dodger fan
Garlick deserves to be picked up. He would make a good journeyman player.
amk3510
Garlick is a worse version of Peters. He really was buried in the depth chart and should get a better opportunity elsewhere.
Col_chestbridge
Tyler White plays every IF position and LF, so there’s a chance he gets claimed. I can see how he might improve, say, the Orioles. He would probably be more interesting if he had more pronounced splits, because he’s clearly not an everyday player. But the versatility is good.
Garlick is an interesting platoon bat with dramatic splits. He also has options. Speculatively, a team like the Indians could pick him up with the intention of stashing him in AAA as a cheap platoon option. The Indians could use him as a platoon OF with either Tyler Naquin or Daniel Johnson later in the year once Naquin is healthy and/or Johnson is called up/past the service time considerations.
Vin Scully
You don’t want a fat guy playing SS or 2B.
Col_chestbridge
I mean he’s obviously not going to be your regular SS but the Astros started him at AAA at SS for 20 games in 2017. He’s played 2B, 3B and LF in the majors. He can play it in a pinch.
Chief Two Hands
Yeah but for everything else in life a fat guy is the way to go! Pitcher, fat guy! Cop, fat guy! Astronaut, fat guy!
abcrazy4dodgers
There’s no fat cops anymore. West of Mississippi River, anyway.
yogineely
Right
eyesaiah
Tyler White for Yordan Alvarez
Vin Scully
If White got into shape he might have had a successful career. He obviously didn’t want it enough to lose 40 pounds.
danielking
That’s exactly it. He can hit. He showed up really trim once before so it’s possible.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
That’s a weird thing to say, and highly inaccurate. It was reported a couple of months ago the Dodgers and White addressed a thyroid issue that had been found and ignore by the Astros. Once addressed he looked significantly smaller and pretty much in shape. Funny how that works.
Vin Scully
5’11 225lbs. He is obese. Maybe that is slim in your world.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
I mean he was sure, yes he was. Again please follow. Dodgers and White acknowledged an abnormality, addressed his thyroid issue, he lost tons of weight after addressing the issue. He is no longer 225. So…… yes. Maybe he is slim now, because he addressed the clear medical issue, just saying.
yogineely
Still a professional athlete which is more than you’ll ever do
gost1
Let me help you, so you dont remain misinformed by White’s victim-speech. Right about the time Jeff Luhnow traded JD Davis for dog food, Tyler was lounging like the Nurse Shark he is at Hearthstone CC, drinking plenty of beer and playing golf. Meanwhile, the Astros did not know this, nor did they tell anyone they were planning on manipulating with Super Two, the eventual unanimous ROY, Yordan Alvarez. Of course anyone who saw both of these players at Spring Training would know this. But even Fangraphs ranked Yordan #6 in our system — nobody seemed to be paying attention. So, basically, White got the opportunity of a lifetime, and he stayed fat. Then blamed the Astros for it. Weak sauce. I predicted he’d be out of baseball soon after his trade.. He’s a serviceable 1B, sub-par everywhere else.
SFGiantsGallore
Hey, maybe him and Sandoval can sit around eating burgers and fries talking about what they could have been if they gave up the food. They’re the new aged bash brothers. Except the only thing they’re bashing is the all you can eat at Golden Corral.
Myvols11
I know things happen and people talk all the time, but honestly if u dont personally know tyler like some then u have no right to talk or say if he wanted it bad enough. He for sure wants it but cant do anything about injuries and as far as wanting to make it and play in MLB he would have played baseball for ANY TEAM, ANYWHERE and he would play for free as long as he just got to play baseball. He graduated at Chase High here in Noth Carolina and didnt even get a college scholarship and walked on at Western Carolina University and had to tryout and dominated and was then drafted by astros in I believe it was 33rd round and worked his ass off, so yes I do regret ur smartass comment about “if he wanted it bad enough”. What round was You drafted in and how far did you make in baseball??
puigpower
Good luck Kyle you’re a good guy

Not worth it!!
number1dodger
That means Peterson is staying. That’s wonderful news. The dodgers have the best line up in the national league.
Royalsfan12
Dodgers should trade Chris Taylor instead
BlueSkies_LA
Pederson is more likely to be traded (that OF is really crowded) but I wouldn’t be shocked if Taylor was on the block too at some point this season.
Jim Emmons
Taylor has more usable tools than Pederson. Not as talented as Kike but can hit for a higher average. Peterson is the logical odd man out. He was considered a good center fielder when he came up. It would be good if he regained that.
Basebal101
Definitely doesn’t mean Joc is is staying. Trading Joc was about lowering payroll and clearing an Of spot on the 26 man. Someone will still be traded, and i’m hoping it’s Joc.
Jim Emmons
I’d like to see pederson and Pollick share left field, though that would be an expensive tandem, Pederson lacks the versatility of Taylor or Hernandez (at least he isn’t playing 1st base anytime soon. It was a real bad time and place for an OFer to have to learn it though) and is the highest priced of the three. We also don’t know if 30 plus is the new HR bar or a fluke.
Walker21Bellibomb35
Nice hope this means kasten makes good on his promise to spend over the luxury tax and we keep joc and Stripling.
Rangers29
Release him, and make him a Ranger! Guzman has been working with Nelson Cruz over the off-season, so hopefully some of that skill runs off onto Guzman. BUT, if Guzman doesn’t perform than boom, Tyler White!
preauto
Maybe a Guzman/White platoon could work? He was really good a couple of years ago .
Cave
When the Stros cheated.
preauto
Ahhh… yes dang good catch. That could very well be why his numbers were good.
Jim Emmons
Not likely cheating added 50 points to his average.
allweatherfan
They haven’t been released so they can’t be claimed yet. Someone might take a chance and trade for Garlick before he’s released.
bobtillman
Garlick is good in some combinations, but he smells funny.
BTW, isn’t eating garlic supposed to be good for fertility?
I’ll be leaving the room now…..

Take jimthegoat with you. You’re both to clever for this crowd
JPADA
You’d think Baltimore or Detroit would claim Garlik, league minimum salary and has options, on top of showing some promise. I”m assuming one of them has the first crack at DFA’s.
Clayton Russell
I’d guess he probably won’t make it to the AL since every NL team gets a chance first. However, it might be a smart move for the Dodgers to trade him to one of those teams for a nominal prospect if they think the Giants might claim him. Just because he’s DFA’d doesn’t mean he’s necessarily on waivers yet.
VegasSDfan
Tampa Bay is calling. The Padres could use a 9th outfielder
zeppy123
Love garlic. Fried onions are great too but never gonna be a main dish…
BlueSkies_LA
If Garlick has options remaining why was one of them not used instead of a DFA?
sully51
Options don’t remove you from the 40 man roster.
BlueSkies_LA
Ah, right. That’s what I was missing. Thanks.
1738hotlinebling
Pirates should grab both
RicoD
Question: If he has 2 options left why can’t he just be sent down to the dodger’s minor league? Is it because he was in the minors for 5 years?
derail76
When a player is optioned, he is not removed from the 40 man roster.
TrumpCard
This is interesting, Cosmopolitan casino just lowered their buffet prices. Tyler White guest appearance??
Clayton Russell
Apparently the Dodgers must think pretty highly of Luke Raley considering trading for him forced them to DFA Garlick.
BlueSkies_LA
I’m sure that wasn’t the plan. The plan was to open two roster spots by trading Stripling and Pederson.
Clayton Russell
That may be true. But even then, they must at least value him higher than Garlick. It’s also possible they still pull another trade off and pull one or both of these guys back from the DFA list (or involve them in the trade). I’m not counting on that though, given how long the last trades took.
aaronbj
The Dodgers got Railey as part of trade with Minnesota for P Brusdar Graterol! Plus Railey was drafted by Dodgers
Jim Emmons
Probably just needed adden value rather than leaving money on the table, Also they have more flexibility with Raley than Garlick. Can store him for future use. Garlick’s shelf life is about up.
Deleted Userrr
Now what will they do in the event of a vampire attack?
I’ll show myself out…
Jim Emmons
Won’t crossing your fingers work but I though garlick was for zombies.. Both? You’re welcome to my level of intellectual conversation anytime, though you may be too hip for the room on occasion.
