Mets Notes: Nimmo, Coaching Changes

By TC Zencka | February 8, 2020 at 11:05pm CDT

The Mets never entertained the idea of trading centerfielder Brandon Nimmo this winter, despite the rumors, and they’re excited about what he can do under new manager Luis Rojas, per Kevin Kernan of the New York Post (who notes that Nimmo played under Rojas thrice before on his way to the major leagues). An injury limited Nimmo’s effectiveness last season, sapping him of power and limiting him to just 43 games in the first half. Nimmo hit just .200/.344/.323 before the break while playing through injuries. The Mets look forward to a healthy season from Nimmo, especially after his return produced a .261/.430/.565 bounceback in September. Centerfield is a difficult position to fill league-wide, and Nimmo’s infectious personality and exceptional eye at the plate make him a valuable performer for the Mets and a key to their 2020 season. Let’s check in on some coaching changes within the Mets’ organization…

  • Former big league catcher Brian Schneider will join the Mets’ staff as a quality control coach, per MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo. Schneider joined the organization this winter as the new manager of the Triple-A Syracuse Mets, though he’ll never actually take over in that role. Schneider assumes the role vacated by new manager Luis Rojas, presumably completing Rojas’ staff.
  • The ripple effects of Carlos Beltran stepping down from his post as manager of the Mets continue throughout the organization as Chad Kreuter takes over Schneider’s post as the manager in Triple-A, per Tim Healey of Newsday. Kreuter, like Schneider, is a former big league catcher. He spent the past three seasons managing the Mets’ High-A affiliate in St. Lucie. His replacement has not yet been named. 2020 will be Kreuter’s fourth season with the Mets’ organization.

One of the most underrated players. But lots of Mets players are underrated.. I recently had a marlins guy here tell me Anderson was better than McNeil

McNeil is certainly not overrated. He just made MLB’s top 10 3b list. He absolutely deserves to be there too.

Nimmo on the otherhand, I think is a bit over valued by the Mets, and they may regret not trading him while his value is high. The Mets are a win now team with too many young outfielders. He can prove me wrong this season though. We’ll see. Lots of question marks for the Mets, but I’d be shocked if they aren’t competing for a playoff spot late in the season.

I can’t see Phillies, Nats or Braves finishing 5th. Sorry Marlins.

the mets will probably be a fourth place team this year, considering they are the fourth best team in the division.

        • VonPurpleHayes

The Mets, Phillies and Nats are all interchangeable in my mind. All the teams have obvious holes, but they also have tremendous talent in other areas. I think the Braves are the most complete team in the NL East, and I have them winning the division again.

        • MetsFan22

I honestly think all teams are interchangeable. I agree Braves are most likely to win. But you said they have no holes. Maybe they don’t but their pitching is the 3rd best and their lineup is good but their 5-9 in their lineup all have a chance to have a ops below 800. They aren’t as far away favorites as everybody says. It wouldn’t surprise me if they don’t make playoffs

Nimmo was forced to play through an injury even well after casual fans knew there was something wrong.

This team is ridiculous. Such a pity the Steve Cohen deal fell through. Can you imagine Jeff Wilpon demanding to continue as COO? That’s like Elmer Fudd demanding to be your hunting guide.

      1. Mets organization has solid talent throughout. 2. Rumors. 3. Cohen knew the terms. And he is not the only person interested in purchasing a NYC-based MLB team. There are other motivated and younger buyers and he had first-dibs since he was already a share-holder.

If he bats lead off and gets on base for Pete to hit him in then he’s valuable to them. Getting in 40% of the time will turn solo home runs into 2 home runs or 3 with mcneil also likely to be on base close to 37% of the time

I know Callaway liked hitting Alonso 2nd but it makes no sense unless you wanna hit Rosario 9th and the pitcher 8th. Put two hitters in front of Alonso to maximize his homers.

        • craigmets

          Okay, my 2 cents worth:
          1. Rosario SS – only true base stealer on team.
          2. Nimmo CF
          3. McNeil 3B
          4. Alonso 1B
          5. Conforto, RF
          6. Davis, Smith, Cespedes LF
          7. Ramos, C
          8. Cano, 2B

the main problem with all these lineups is BVW will never let Cano bat low in the lineup.

          Nimmo cf
          Davis LF
          McNeil 3B

          Conforto rf
          Ramos c
          Cano 2B
          Rosario ss

This is the lineup the should go with. And u can replace Davis with Cespedes if he is healthy.

I do like McNeil hitting lead off, but never liked Alonso hitting second due to his lack of speed. Mets have a weird, atypical lineup right now. Rosario has the speed and extra bases to hit lead off but the on base percentage. Maybe the best lead off hitter is McNeil followed by Conforto then Alonso third. Davis lacks the power but could hit .300 again and seems to excel with runners on. Ramos 5th makes no sense but works. So then it’s Nimmo and Rosario 6 and 7 with Cano 8th. Cespedes ties their hands in such a knot it’s ridiculous.

It’s a solid cast of characters but none of them seem to be in the ‘right’ position in the lineup, traditionally.

      Nimmo
      Davis
      Conforto
Alonso (get 3 guys that get on base a lot before Alonso)
McNeil (let McNeil drive in all those runs in)
Cano (back to back lefties but McNeil hits lefties good)
Rosario (I would beat him 8th but Ramos I think could handle that better)
      Ramos

      Ces
      Lowrie
      Smith
      Marisnick
      Nido

That’s one of the best lineups in baseball when Rosario takes another step and nobody gets worse.. yes Ik Alonso won’t hit 52 bombs but I’m still expecting an elite year for him.

People really don’t talk about how abominable the Mets defense is. It was very easy to just blame the bullpen last year, but plenty of games were lost with awful defense and that will continue this year.

We can hope these guys can improve with their fielding. A good glove can account for, …who knows, maybe 10-15 more victories. Mets were bottom half of league last year in fielding percentage, an aspect needing to be addressed..

Based on what we know about last year, it seems that Davis is one of those guys that will work really hard to improve his defense at both 3b and of. He mentioned how diligent he was in studying replays of his at bats. He told of how he would take the disc home to his apartment and study them. In pre game meetings he would be very informative to others.

With that kind of dedication I would be willing to bet that he has spent his California winter working hard on his defense. He comes across as a player who ants to excel. He faced some frustrating early experience with Houston. I guess no one told him about the cheating as he struggled in 2018.

That’s exactly what Davis did this offseason as he said he would at end of the season – work hard on defense and agility which he recently confirmed he did. I look forward to eyeballing the improvements.

The Mets have also put in place a sophisticated performance, technical, analytical and preparation model in every aspect of the game that should help each and every player to improve. I’m very excited about that. Great article about it in the NY Post.

      Agree.

There’s also plenty upside if he can stay on the field, improve throwing mechanics, K less and use whole field. I believe he can get there.

I hesitate to add more steals in light of his 2 bulging disks in neck. Otherwise I think he’s a 20’/20 guy.
