Rays Sign Brooks Pounders, Deck McGuire

By Jeff Todd | February 14, 2020 at 12:42pm CDT

The Rays have reached minor-league agreements with righties Brooks Pounders and Deck McGuire, as Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times was among those to report on Twitter. Both will enter MLB camp.

Pounders, 29, has some swing-and-miss ability but hasn’t yet translated that into results at the MLB level. He has allowed 43 earned runs and 14 long balls through 45 2/3 innings over the past four campaigns, though he also carries a much more promising 47:12 K/BB ratio. Pounders spent most of 2019 at Triple-A, where he worked to a 4.31 ERA with 10.5 K/9 against 3.2 BB/9 over 56 1/3 frames.

As for McGuire, he’s a former first-round pick who has appeared in the majors but has not reached his initially perceived ceiling. The 30-year-old owns a 5.23 ERA in 51 2/3 frames in the majors. He struggled last year with Korea’s Samsung Lions, managing only a 5.05 ERA with 8.0 K/9 and 5.3 BB/9 in 21 starts before being cut loose.

some of these guys really need to choose another sport that doesn’t involve a bat & ball

Some of “These guys” earned a nice salary last. They’re living what they love and if they’re smart, they’re in a good position to ensure that they have a comfortable retirement. I don’t blame them. Just below 7 figures a year would make me happy.

Based on the names of these players, the Rays are now officially my second favorite AL team. Go A’s!

It still hurts my soul to know that the Jays selected McGuire two picks ahead of Chris friggin’ Sale.

The Mets lost Pounders? They’re doomed! (Someone has to say that seriously…because I sure didn’t!)

The point of being a pounder isn’t to be unhittable, it’s to take a hit while landing two.

The rays have signed 5 or 6 bums like this during the winter. It is a low risk low cost move and if just one becomes a big part of the bullpen it was worth it and because it’s the rays one of them Will

I know Reese McGuire was just arrested but they didn’t have to deck him. Ok, maybe they did.

Neither of these guys will make the team they are just arms for training camp. I believe either Rays minor leaguers Joe Ryan or Tyler Zombro will fill the needed gap of replacing Pagan. At best these guys show something to get a spot at Durham
