While he’s already said to be considering multiple offers from other organizations, righty Taijuan Walker is going to throw for at least one team in hopes of boosting interest. He’s in Cubs camp readying to audition, ESPNChicago.com’s Jesse Rogers reports on Twitter.
It might be tempting to wonder if there’s some kind of agreement in place, but Rogers says that’s not the case. It does seem fair to assume there’s serious interest, though.
Given that Walker already seems to have at least one solid opportunity with the Mariners, his former team, it’s notable that he’s willing to go put on an in-person showing at this point. If he lands with the Cubs, he’d presumably be given a shot to duel with Tyler Chatwood in camp for the fifth starter’s job.
The Cubs have pursued low-cost, reasonably high upside opportunities wherever possible this winter. Just what kind of money the team could promise Walker — in an up-front guarantee or through incentives — isn’t really clear. But it seems unlikely the Chicago organization will make a significant commitment at this point given the obvious, self-imposed constraints it has operated under this offseason.

Wonder how it came about to be held at Cubs camp
Old User Name
Might be because that’s where he wants to sign.
notgood27
Because he lives 20 minutes away from their facility in Arizona
bobsugar84
Great fit if he can perform. Fast ball was way down last workout.
antibelt
He was hitting 94 at the end of last season. Most of these guys take time to ramp up.

Come to Boston’s camp next please! Who knows, we might even have a manager by then 😉
ReverieDays
They already named Ron Roenicke as the Manager…
phillesfan07
If he is not guilty in the Apple watch sign stealing scandal
looiebelongsinthehall
Not officially although when the paper that runs the story is owned by John Henry, might as well make it official. Supposedly MLB will release its investigation findings on Wednesday so as long as Roenicke‘s name isn’t on the same page as Cora’s, the job should be his.
Jubilee3333
He means a real manager.
DirtyWater04
Seriously, given what we have for ML ready arms and the fact that Sale, Eo, and Rodriguez are all sure to miss some starts at some point, we’ll surely be throwing crap at the wall to see what sticks in the spot Price used to occupy. Why not see if Walker has any juice left in his arm?
Vizionaire
lol at mariners!
pageian
I’d be okay with this, I hope he’s healthy.
Rallyshirt
It’s up to you Cub Fans.
T. Walker or a new O. Steakhouse?
bitteroldman
I’d settle for J. in the Box
bitteroldman
I’d settle for J. in the Box
phillesfan07
I REALLY want the Phillies to get him so bad.
*realizes they can’t even afford a low-cost pitcher*
WHY HAVE WE SPENT SO MUCH MONEY AND STILL SUCK!!!! AHG
bigbadjohnny
If his pitches has movement…..good……if not……we know where Strop 94 mph no movement fast balls end up at……on Waveland Ave.
Robertn623
If your going to post at least post facts strop in over 500 innings has given up 34 hrs that is about 1 every 14 innings pitched …if he did not wear his hat as a tribute to his grandfather who raised him and kept him away from gangs and kept him on the straight and narrow no people would realize how good he was
Georgiajeff
I had no idea why he did that.
chitowninwi
Nice to know someone knows the story of the hat position
rondon
Was good. He blew several saves in April/May last season which put them in an early hole and was prone to give up big hits at bad times. Even as far back as the WS, Madden never went to him but maybe once (?) even when Chapman’s arm was falling off. And he was the 8th inning guy.
Robertn623
And before you think im making stats up baseball-reference.com/players/s/stroppe01.shtml
Rumncoke
they can have him
bravesfan
I feel like the orioles should be all over this. I can’t imagine his price tag being stupid or anything
Cam
They can be as all over it as they want – it doesn’t matter a bit if the player has no interest in them.
Rangers29
Maybe a good bounce back guy, but IDK maybe Hendricks can show him how to become a control pitcher.
jdgoat
I really hope he can bounce back to the form that he once was. You hate to see such talent and promise ruined by injuries.
mistry gm
I didn’t think the Cubs could afford him. By the way…. Comments weren’t allowed in the article about the Astros front office being involved in the sign stealing. Come on “Trade Rumors”, dont help them escape this!
Fred K. Burke
Maybe a Jose Quintana trade is next if the Cubs sign Walker. Who knows a trade may even be contingent upon signing another starter like Walker. The Cubs need to drop around 3 million to get under the luxury tax.
theoepsteinhof
Good news is that the luxury tax is not calculated until end of year, therefore the Cubs don’t need to be under before opening day.
Fred K. Burke
True. But Mr. Ricketts wants this payroll issue accomplished ASAFP.
Georgiajeff
It would not hurt my feelings to see Q traded. Being that this is his walk year look for him to win 20 games and we are close enough so we have to keep him. Meanwhile Jimenez hits 30+ home runs and Cease wins 15 games
houkenflouken
I feel like 25 teams could use a guy like Walker. I just hope the team he chooses is the M’s
:o)
dematteo1982
I had Walker as a sleeper Free Agent signing earlier this offseason and still feel that way. He is a low risk, high reward signing. On the right team and health permitting..
I can see him making 25 starts..140 or so IP…an Era in the mid 3’s. 7-9 so/9…
If he lands in the NL his value is higher than the AL. I was hoping the Mets would take a chance, but I’m ok with Wacha being the 1st man up if/when an injury tobthe rotation occurs.
I hope Walker finds a good home and has a bounce back season
Cubfan Mike
We need a guy like Walker. See if our pitching gurus can help him find his stuff
Aaron Sapoznik
The Cubs certainly have a rotation spot open following Jon Lester, Yu Darvish, Kyle Hendricks and Jose Quintana. They could also offer Taijuan Walker an incentive laden MLB contract rather than just a minor league deal with an invite to their big league spring training camp.
Walker was one of my favorite free agent ‘sleeper’ candidates this offseason. Make it so, Theo!
bigbadjohnny
Chatwood,….,Mills……Alzolay………everyone wants to be #5……..but I think we could have six starters……will happen soon in MLB.
Jack Buckley
I live in Arizona, take the over on how long Walker and Steven Souza Jr are on the DL
wordonthestreet
I will take the under
cubbies24
I’d be on board with kickin the tires on Walker, honestly it could turn out to be the best move the Cubs made all winter………but that’s also not saying much
CaptainHooks
Perhaps the Twins will give one more call to Taijuan Walker. There is a chance Walker could make the Twins rotation, but I would offer hims a Minor League contract with a chance to prove himself in Spring Training.
justme
Come on cubbies sign this guy..if he is healthy he could be a game changer for this rotation as said by others they have plenty of time to clear payroll if he can return to form he is a 15 plus win guy all day
crazylarry
Wow how did Epller miss on this one? Oh I know he isn’t a total rag arm and doesn’t want 10X what the market actually is for him.
