Red Sox Sign Zack Godley; Rodriguez & Hernandez Back In Camp

By Jeff Todd | July 17, 2020 at 7:01pm CDT

As anticipated, the Red Sox have reached agreement with righty Zack Godley, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports on Twitter. The deal is now formally wrapped up, with Godley taking a 60-man player pool spot and heading to Summer Camp.

Godley will still need to earn his way onto the Boston 40-man and active roster. But he’s expected to have ample opportunity to do so.

The Red Sox did finally get some other good news on the pitching front. Southpaws Eduardo Rodriguez and Darwinzon Hernandez, each sidelined due to coronavirus considerations, are back in camp, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe tweets. They’ll still need to build up to regular season readiness.

Godley, 30, was cut free recently by the Tigers. Since he had participated in the Detroit organization’s Summer Camp, Godley is in a relatively advanced position in terms of readiness. With the Boston rotation short on experienced options, he’s seen as a plug-and-go option.

Whether Godley can seize the opportunity remains to be seen. He has had his chances in recent years but has thus far failed to regain the form he showed earlier in his career. In his best season, 2017, Godley turned in 155 innings of 3.37 ERA pitching with 9.6 K/9, 3.1 BB/9, and a 55.3% groundball rate.

    Nice, a decent low-risk pickup.

Clearly didn’t watch his -.7 war last year. Couldn’t even stay in a jays rotation that was bottom 3 in the league

cant imagine he gets more then 1 or 2 starts. Johnson should clearly be the #5 when Eduardo gets back

      Godley is better than Johnson

Johnson has been nothing special with the chances he’s gotten. If Johnson has a chance to pitch in this rotation, why not bring back Henry Owens?…

Am I the only one who had no idea which Hernandez was being referenced? Seems like there’s so many in MLB right now. Felix, Teoscar, Darwinzon, Gorkys, Kike, etc.

If you read the article, it clearly states Darwinzon. They can’t put full names in the headline, otherwise it would be 4 lines long!

I would hope the Red Sox try Darwinzon as an opener for a few starts just to see if his control hold up. He has the stuff I am not sure about the control to be a starter. I think the last starter drafted by the RS to contribute more than a handful of starts was Buchholz Who debuted in 2007……

yeah I agree, but think having him be an opener and sort of stretching him out that way, even if it’s just 2-3 innings could be a unique way to see if his control could potentially hold up enough to start either as the year goes on or next season. He has the raw talent/stuff to be a starter — but he might still be better off in the bullpen. Having said that, I do think if he does wind up in the bullpen he could certainly be a high leverage guy, towards the back end of the pen — his stuff is just that good.

Not sure why the Tigers cut Godley loose. They have stated they do not wish to have their young guns pitch in the majors this year even though they are part of the Taxi Squad. Now with Zimmermann on the shelf Godley could have been useful to the TIgers. But hey, might work out well for Zack so good for him.

Just another of the “new normal” type of signings the Red Sox are making these days
