Latest On Giancarlo Stanton

By Jeff Todd | August 11, 2020 at 9:57am CDT

The Yankees got some promising news on sidelined slugger Giancarlo Stanton. The burly outfielder was diagnosed with a relatively mild grade 1 hamstring strain, per Jon Heyman of MLB Network (Twitter link).

With little reason to push Stanton now, the front-running Yanks already placed him on the injured list. He’ll no doubt be sidelined longer than the requisite ten days. But there’s now at least cause for hope that he can make it back to the roster in time to contribute down the stretch and into the postseason.

Stanton, 30, had turned in a resurgent effort at the plate in the early going. After missing the bulk of 2019, he was turning heads with a .293/.453/.585 batting line through 14 games this year. Better still, he had drawn ten walks to go with 11 strikeouts, a marked turnaround from the strikeout concerns that had cropped up since Stanton arrived in New York.

Now it’s back to the trainer’s room for a player who has been no stranger to it. Stanton has had prior hamstring issues, though that wasn’t among the particular problem areas that kept him off the field in 2020.

High output in no-pressure Miami earns his paycheck. Low output in high-pressure New York. Does not earn his paycheck. Typical free agents. Spend more time off the field than on. That’s why owners should stop over paying.

Sure. Tiny then amateurs should be subject to a free market through the years where they are underpaid for actual performance.

This take is bitter. The owners by far extract more value from the players than the other way.

He wasn’t a free agent bud.

And he has hit more than fine since a yankee. He had one injury year. How come judge didn’t get ridiculed last year for “always being hurt” because he missed a lot of time.

Took the words out of my mouth man. And that’s not a slight on Judge. I love him. He’s must watch. But I don’t understand the hate Giancarlo gets. All of last year and 2018 playoffs were a disaster. But he was pretty good during 2018 regular season, never has any off the field issues which isn’t always the case for stars in NYC, and as you could see this season he’s dedicated to trying to do what he can to help the team most. It sucks he keeps getting hurt but damn

He’s a great ballplayer, but after so many years of constant injuries, you wonder if he’s ever going to be able to carve out a full, productive season again. Remember Kyle Blanks, who played with the Pads several seasons ago? He was built like a tank, one of the most imposing looking guys I’ve ever seen. But he was never able to overcome a laundry list of maladies that ruined his career. Mike Morse was another such guy. Stanton is way better than either of the guys I mentioned, but sure hasn’t been able to give the Yanks much for all the $$$ of his contract.

There are a lot of fans who think players can decide to play well or not and can decide to stay healthy or not and make those decisions based on whether they have a fat contract or are trying to earn one. It reflects more about the type of human being those fans are. They are probably looking at player results through their own values. If they had the skills to play professional sports–and they clearly don’t and don’t understand what it’s like to have those skills, they’d work hard to get a high paying contract and then loaf and not stay in shape once they had a guaranteed pay check. I feel sorry for them.

It’s not a lack of effort that has lead to Stanton’s inability to live up to the money, it’s injuries. Not his fault, just how the game goes sometimes.

I’ll believe it when I see it. Stanton is in his best shape ever. And he always manages to get hurt. Might as well just leave him on the IL. And bring him back a few weeks before the playoffs. I like Giancarlo a lot. But that doesn’t matter. That doesn’t stop him from getting injured all the time. Yanks can still have the best record in the majors without him. Just bring him back for the last few weeks of the season(kid gloves) smh

Stanton was constantly hurt in miami as well. A lot of them were 1-0ffs but he still missed a ton of playing time.

His pay has nothing to do with it. Miami knew his injury history with they signed him and the Yankees knew it when they traded for him. Not exactly his fault

Miami signed him to that big deal because Loria knew he was going to sell the team, so he wasn’t going to be the one paying the deal.

It’s Red Thunder’s time to shine. Don’t look bad and hand the job back to Giancarlo Ellsbury whenever he decides to gets healthy one day in the future. This might be Frazier’s last chance? But, haven’t we heard that before though?

Well, this isn’t so bad, man.
He could be back by the end of August. Sucks because he was so locked in.

I know this’ll bring a new round of Yankee fan angst and specific complaints in regards to Stanton.
    Whatever.

The bottom line is *every* team’s lineup in MLB is better with him in it. I’m pro-good players on my team. Looking forward to getting him back.
In the meantime, let’s see what we have with some other players. Hopefully, we create one of those “good problems to have”.

Yes! When he’s on the field he makes a team better.
Most teams can’t afford a ~$30M/yr part-time player who is very good when he’s good, and very expensive when he’s on the DL.
Yankees could care less – they are trying to buy another flag but having trouble buying past Bridesmaid.
Pretty much like the Dodgers, a couple of Bridesmaids teams.

I love Stanton. I know he’ll bounce back and break batting records.

New Fish ownership knew they did not want to pay Stanton at least 25 million a year until he was 38 yrs old and, most importantly, they wanted to rebuild.

I just hope Sherman/Jeter and Co. invest that saved money into the ballclub (and not their pocketslike previous regimes. ) and finally make the Fish annual contenders

It’s not on Miami that the Yankees paid up for Stanton. A player that misses a ton of time in his early 20s is going to miss time later on. I was surprised they got a full season out of him.

Take responsibility for a deal you make, don’t blame the other guy

@johnrealtime- try to remember how Jeter “gift wrapped” Stanton to the Yankees. It’s just too bad he doesn’t want him back. He was constantly getting hurt down there in Miami all the time. They were so relieved when Stanton accepted a trade to the Yankees. But nobody could of predicted it was going to be this bad.

When Giancarlo Ellsbury is eventually released or eventually bought out he will likely go star in Los Angeles playing dh for the Dodgers. Hopefully they don’t turn in to a dynasty beforehand. He’ll love playing for the Dodgers so much he’d probably play hurt. (his dream team)

What’s sad is you argue over who’s getting the short end of these ridiculous contracts, player or owners, when in reality it is. We’re financing this stupidity by buying everything they push, tickets, gear, beer, cars whatever they promote.

Remember when everyone talked about how Jeter dealt Yankees such a special player on a buy-low trade, and subsequently hammered the Yankees for it?

Soooooo, his career is somewhat parallel to Larry Walker – great when healthy but oft-injured player who averaged 116 games per year, with many season under 100 games.
