Yankees Plan To Activate Aroldis Chapman Monday

By George Miller | August 16, 2020 at 4:37pm CDT

The Yankees intend to activate closer Aroldis Chapman tomorrow, according to Lindsey Adler of The Athletic. Chapman has yet to pitch for the Yankees this year after a positive COVID-19 test during Spring Training 2.0.

Chapman originally went on the injured list on July 11, so it’s clearly taken a bit of time for him to not only get healthy, but also ramp back up into the swing of things.

Nonetheless, he’ll be a key addition to the back end of the Yankee bullpen, which has relied primarily upon Zack Britton in save situations through the first 20 games. Even with Chapman on the sidelines, Yankee relievers have been as dominant as expected, with Britton, Chad Green, and Adam Ottavino anchoring the unit. Unfortunately, they now find themselves without Tommy Kahnle, who underwent Tommy John surgery nearly two weeks ago.

The 32-year-old Chapman will embark on the first season of the $48MM extension he inked with the Yankees last winter. The shortened season means he will only earn a prorated version of his nominal $16MM salary.

Chapman, though perhaps slightly more worldly than he was when he broke into the Majors in 2010, is still one of the most dominant arms in baseball. Last year, he pitched to the tune of a 2.21 ERA while striking out 85 batters in 57 innings of work. And though his fastball averages a meager 98.2 mph these days, expect more of the same dominance when he makes his return to the mound in the coming days.

Knock out? That sounds like Ken Giles punching himself in the face after blowing a save against the Yankees when he was pitching for the cheatin’ Stros’

He could always ask Clemens or ARod how to get better with age. Perhaps even David Ortiz

@Yanks4life the article is about Chapman….. man Yankee fans are really dumb. Chapman has two mental breakdowns one during WS2016 when he cried like a little girl and in 2019 when he smiled after choking again against Yankees West

@johnnydubz- If you watched the WS2016 you would of seen a closer that was over used & not used correctly by Joe Maddon who almost ruined Chappy’s career. Which was a dirt bag move when the Cubs never had any intention of re-signing him in the lst place. So basically they over used him for a championship. In the 2019 ALCS you said Chappy choked and smiled while walking off the field. Well that because the Stros’ and Altuve knew the slider was coming when Altuve hit the walk off homerun. So Chappy smiled because he knew they were cheating. The Stros’ won because they cheated. Plain & simple. So please stop trolling and do your homework. If you didn’t know. You didn’t know.

@lowereastrider funny it seems Yankees fans are freaking out over the Astros more than everyone else. Perhaps you aren’t use to someone cheating against you but Braves,Padres,Mets,Phillies know that experience from you. Funny you want Astros to strip their championship but the 5 championships by Yanks and 3 by Red Sox you feel shouldn’t be…….

@Yanks4Life David Robertson was a used by Yanks as was Scott Proctor. Indians did the same thing with Andrew Miller that WS too. Torre did the same thing with Rivera who happened to be a freak of nature. It reminded me of Mo smiling when Ortiz would beat him numerous times in 04ALCS. I guess like Chapman he smiled because the other team out cheated his team. Trolling? Dude you mention Ken Giles who has nothing to do with the article. Did you know Rob Manfred is a Yankees fan. Did you know Beltran was on the 16 Yankees? Did you know he was Cashman’s “special assistant”? Did you know Manfred and Yankees are hiding a letter about Yankees sign stealing in 2017? That’s exactly what the Astros did and that was the year Judge who was garbage before all of a sudden became a good hitter…..

@johnnydubz- maybe your right regarding some of the things your saying? But without any evidence it is still fake news. It must be a proven fact. Everyone was using steroids in the 90’s. But it isn’t going to stop Bonds, Clemens, and Ortiz from getting in the Hall Of Fame is it? I’m all for the Astros & RedSox losing their current championships. Just give the rings to no team. Baseball has been tarnished with all the cheating all these years. A major black eye. If the Yankees have done the same they will be punished also. Make no mistake about it. I’m not a Manfred fan regardless if he is a Yankee’s fan or not.

Connorsoxfan- You sound like a fan rooting for a team that will be fighting last place with the Orioles this year. You sound like a good shot in the garage.

Falling asleep doesn’t really mean I don’t care. I think it’s great that the yankees are getting their closer back on the mound. I hope they win all their games. And if all their players get injured? Oh well.

I think Miller was being sarcastic..I think. I admit I am giving the article writer the benefit of the doubt here, but it’s difficult to imagine someone REALLY thinking a 98 mph fastball is “meager”.

Please consider that he also wrote, “The shortened season means he will only earn a prorated version of his nominal $16MM salary.” Pretty sure the writer was being a tad tongue-in-cheek.

Maybe, but there was also the awkward reference to being “slightly more worldly.” Huh? What does that have to do with anything? The article is littered with odd references that detract, an increasing issue with MLBTR writers. Report the facts.

    Good.

Yanks can certainly use him. Be interesting to see if one of; Loiaisiga, Holder, Cessa, Heller, or even perhaps Avilen can emerge to enter the Circle of Trust™.
Best case scenario a couple of them will.

I think Loaisiga is doing just that. His last few outings were in the 2nd half of close games. If they keep him to no more than 2 innings per appearance and stop with “the opener” gimmick, he’ll have success as a reliever. His 3rd innings are usually when he gets into trouble.
