Orioles Claim Yolmer Sanchez

By Anthony Franco | October 30, 2020 at 1:35pm CDT

The Orioles announced they’ve claimed infielder Yolmer Sánchez off waivers from the White Sox. That brings Baltimore’s 40-man roster tally to 33 players.

The 28-year-old Sánchez was non-tendered by the Sox over the 2019 offseason despite winning the AL Gold Glove award at second base. That reflected his lackluster offensive production, as he hit just .252/.318/.321 in 555 plate appearances. After a minor-league deal with the Giants didn’t lead to a big league opportunity, though, Sánchez briefly found himself back on the South Side down the stretch in 2020. He is controllable through 2022.

Awesome! Great defender, miscast as a starter obviously but will fill a needed bench role.

Hopefully this means no more Velazquez on the 40-man, barring a barrage of IL designations.

That’s what rebuilding teams need! Late inning defensive replacements.

I have no trouble taking a flyer on him or using him to hold a spot till someone better is ready, but he isn’t an asset like a high leverage reliever is.

Well, let’s see. Maybe they see some Ian’s can get his offensive numbers to tick up a bit.

If he still gets tendered a contract and goes through arb, isn’t he set to earn more than Iglesias?

Middle infield should be very good to the starting pitching.

This guy can absolutely pick it, man.

If he could just hit a little bit.

They have special ‘vitamins’ that help players hit better.

I think a lot of you guys have a real misconception about what PEDs actually do.

I didn’t realize the Sox waived Yolmer. I guess I should pay a little more attention to the Sox. 🙂

Not much of a hitter, but I still enjoyed having him on the Sox. He is good on defense. Fun guy in the clubhouse. I think he will be a good pickup for the O’s.

The White Sox didn’t announce it until today on their official MLB website and only in the transaction section and not through an official press release as I post. I hadn’t heard anything about it earlier on social media which has rightfully been more concerned with the White Sox managerial hire.

Him and Iglesias on the same field could be nice! Probably won’t sign Jose though because of this move

Yeah, they would have a really good view of all the balls smashed over their heads out of the park.

I checked Tim Dierkes’ Arbitration Projection Model, but Sanchez isn’t listed there. Can CHW sign Sanchez to a minor league deal now? Or does he go through arbitration? What type of financial commitment will this waiver claim Sanchez entail?

The Orioles waiver claim of Yolmer Sanchez puts him on their 40-man MLB roster, at least for now, as the article already pointed out. No team can sign Sanchez unless the Orioles decide to waive him off of their own roster.

Yolmer Sanchez had been on the White Sox 40-man roster which is now down to 37. It will be reduced further by Sunday’s deadline in regards to the 2021 contract options of DH Edwin Encarnacion and LHP Gio Gonzalez which will surely be bought out for a lesser amount. C James McCann, RHP Alex Colome and OF Jarrod Dyson had each previously elected free agency following the conclusion of the World Series. It’s possible but not likely that the front office will offer qualifying offers to McCann and Colome by Sunday’s deadline.

Sanchez and Iglesias would give the Orioles a strong defensive middile infield. Don’t discount the O’s possibly keeping Iglesias, his 3.5 million option isn’t that tough to swallow payroll wise

I’ve always liked this guy. Can’t hit a lick but terrific D. Basically a great glove off the bench

Hey guys I see the Orioles infield looking like this so far. Mountcastle at 1b, Sanchez at 2b, Iglesias at ss, Nunez at 3b/dh, Rios at 3b, with Valikia as utility and Alberto as utility.

The outfield I think will be LF Mancini if healthy, CF Hayes, RF Santander, with Mullins and Wilkerson if healthy.

I think the Orioles should get a starting OF this fall.
