Mets Sign Wilfredo Tovar, Tom Windle To Minors Deals

By Connor Byrne | December 21, 2020 at 8:11pm CDT

The Mets announced that they have signed infielder Wilfredo Tovar and left-hander Tom Windle to minor league contracts with invitations to major league spring training. The club also made the previously reported minor league signings of reliever Jerry Blevins and starter Jerad Eickhoff official.

This will be the second Mets go-around for the 29-year-old Tovar, who was previously part of the organization from 2008-15. Tovar saw scant major league experience during that time, totaling 22 plate appearances, but amassed 88 PA with the Angels in 2019. Overall, Tovar has batted .188/.241/.238 with no home runs in 110 major league PA and .268/.342/.352 with 30 homers and 179 steals over 2,011 minor league trips to the plate.

Windle was a second-round pick of the Dodgers in 2013, but he still hasn’t cracked the majors. Along with righty Zach Eflin, Windle was part of the Dodgers-Phillies trade that sent shortstop Jimmy Rollins to Los Angeles in December 2014. Windle, 28, spent time in Triple-A ball with the Phillies in 2018-19 and notched a 4.21 ERA with 8.9 K/9 and 5.2 BB/9 across 104 2/3 innings.

Depth is good. Have a big spring training camp and whoever doesn’t make the cut gets released.

He’s busy recouping his expenses paid on the Mets with the stock market rally that will continue with a new stimulus package passing. This is all on Sandy.

I’ll never understand the irrational, obsessive hate the Mets get here. Every move they make is either THE top free agent or a bunch of knuckle-staggers come out of the woodworks to act like morons and ridicule the move. Teams need small signings too. There’s nuance and complexity to things that seems to escape some. So let me try and explain wtf Cohen is doing: he’s building a competitive team. It doesn’t happen over night and it takes more than throwing buckets of money at the few big names fly-by-night fans who hate on the team are aware of.

I think you’re correct about Rosario, but I don’t think that a AAAA signing like Tovar is connected to his situation

Not that it really matters but I also don’t really know where it could have come from… Tovar doesn’t have 7 steals in the majors… he only has 1. He does seem to have solid speed/baserunning ability based on his minor league steal totals… but he definitely doesn’t have 7 ML steals…

Ahh I think I see where you got 7 from… it’s the column over but it’s 7 RBI’s not SB’s that Tovar has in the majors.

Do you not understand how baseball works? What’s your obsession with hating a team that got to the WS five years ago? All you do is build straw men to burn down. The off season isn’t anywhere near over, and I don’t recall any Met fans claiming the team would “dominate” the off season. This is an odd hobby you have here, hating on one team day after day.

If Tovar doesn’t workout, he can come play on my coed softball team in queens.

You joke but I had a couple of pro-ball players play in our league for a few games one summer. I felt like I was a t-ball player. These guys were throwing lasers to home plate from the OF fence. They hit homers that would go of out any pro field. Underhanding 70+ mph pitches. I managed to hit a few (foul). Wasn’t fair to us plebs but fun to watch.

I was partially kidding, Dom smith actually played a few games with us, and I’ve never seen a human being threw a softball laser from the outfield wall to home plate. Super nice guy too.

Cohen and Anderson said recently that the lack of prospect talent at AAA means that they need to sign vets to MiLB contracts to fill those rosters. They can’t all be Tebow…

Mets are in on Springer. They also could be in on next year’s very deep SS market. They need to pay Conforto, Noah, Diaz or his replacement, Stroman or his replacement + Cano back on books for $24mil.

Mets have a very nice 18 -21 class. Allen, Baty, Mauricio, Wolf, Ginn, Green, Crow-Armstrong, Vientos, Alvarez + Gimenez on 40 man. Szapucki can help this year.
