Braves, Carl Edwards Jr. Agree To Minor League Deal

By Connor Byrne | January 29, 2021 at 7:26pm CDT

The Braves have reached a minor league agreement with right-handed reliever Carl Edwards Jr., Jon Heyman of MLB Network tweets.

Edwards is best known as a member of the Cubs, with whom he spent 2015-19 and won a World Series in 2016. He was a highly effective reliever for most of that period, though Edwards’ production fell off in his last season as a Cub and they traded him to the Padres that summer. Edwards didn’t last long as a Padre, throwing 1 2/3 innings of six-run ball before they let him go.

Edwards became a Mariner before last season when he signed a major league deal with the team, though forearm problems limited him to just 4 2/3 innings. However, the 29-year-old did yield a meager one run during that time and post better strikeout and walk percentages than usual (35.3 and 5.9).

In all, Edwards has recorded a 3.54 ERA/3.52 SIERA, averaged about 95 mph on his fastball, and registered a 32.9 percent strikeout rate against a 13.7 walk rate in 180 2/3 major league innings. Based on his track record, it’s easy to see why a team would take a chance on him in free agency. The Braves are an especially logical fit with Mark Melancon and Shane Greene on the free-agent market.

Same company, just depends which side of the Mississippi you’re on. But the original comment did make me chuckle.

Easy for the team to create fan appreciation promotions…. I’m surprised the chain hasn’t come up with a baseball sandwich promotion in whatever city he pitches….

Well if we’re calling out national food chains, then step up Papa John’s! Former Padre John Ritchey broke the color barrier in the PCL the year after Jackie Robinson. The perfect excuse to finally break your gross one pepper color policy.

I disagree that minor league deals have no downside. Money is money at the end of the day.. money that can be spent on better more secure talent. THAT SAID, this deal is about as close to no downside as it gets with a pretty high ceiling considering

Minor league deals are an opportunity for marginal players to either prove their worth to a major league club or wash out. Minimal risk, and Edwards has been effective in the past.

Points for a really funny joke, I hope.

Though they share the same name, they are not related. The biggest giveaway is Carl Edwards the driver is white while Carl Jr. is black.

I didn’t know this but apparently he was drafted in the 48th round! That’s got to be one of the highest draft picks to make it to the majors.

Really? I didn’t know that, that’s amazing! That’s why I didn’t like the 5 round draft they did last year. Every once in a while you can find MLB talent in the later rounds.

Really hope he finds his confidence. He was a really good pitcher for the cubs and then he just lost it. Don’t know what happened. Maybe that 10th inning game 7. He gave up a run.

MLB outlawed his delivery a couple years ago, and he hasn’t been able to adjust since that happened. He did this thing where he would take a step before he started his arm movement, and MLB didn’t like it. I hope he can figure things out though.

Honestly, this is an awesome pickup for the Braves. Basically a high ceilings to low risk ratio. I followed him coming up through the Cubs farm system. If I recall correctly he was in the top 100 list at one point, if not definitely their top 30 when they had a stacked system at the time. Nice move Braves. Now make one that is more impactful

Actually they acquired him from the Rangers for Matt Garza and a few others. Mike Olt, Justin Grimm and Neil Ramirez.

      Fun Fact.

His nickname first players weekend is String Bean Slinger.

Braves need to make some more aggressive moves, but this is low cost and high upside to fill a need.
Indians got Rosario 1 yr. for 8 mill? That is braves all over it and they missed that? Disappointing.

Braves fans, keep your powder dry. AA is known for silence and late signings. I still think he’s trying to work a deal for J-Ram. I asked the question in another article but it’s worth repeating. Cleveland gets Pache or Waters, Contreras or Langeliers, and Riley. Braves get Ramirez.

I don’t think the Braves would include Pache, but the rest sounds reasonable. Though, I think Cleveland will try to compete with what they have right now and Ramirez is a huge part of that.
