Corey Kluber, Steve Cishek, Anthony Swarzak Throw For Teams

By Steve Adams | January 14, 2021 at 7:20am CDT

Jan. 14: ESPN’s Buster Olney tweets that Kluber’s market could come together rather quickly with one throwing session for teams in the books. He’s not expected to require a second showcase to further demonstrate his health.

Jan. 13: Free-agent right-hander Corey Kluber held a showcase for interested teams today, and Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times tweets that relievers Anthony Swarzak and Steve Cishek both threw for teams as well. (All three are clients of Jet Sports Management, so it’s natural that they’d host the workout together.) As many as 25 teams were present, per The Atheltic’s Britt Ghiroli (Twitter link).

ESPN’s Jeff Passan notes that Kluber’s velocity topped out at 90 mph, though given where he is in the rehab process from last year’s injuries, it wasn’t expected that he’d be up to peak velocity just yet. Eric Cressey, whose strength and conditioning facility hosted the showcase, told ESPN’s Jesse Rogers yesterday that Kluber was at 87-89 mph in the prior session. Cressey suggested that Kluber is already ahead of many pitchers who’ve not yet ramped up their throwing to this point. Kluber averaged 92 mph on his heater back during his excellent 2018 campaign.

The full list of teams in attendance isn’t known, although given that this was an open look at a two-time Cy Young winner and a pair of relievers with considerable late-inning MLB experience, it’d be more notable to learn which few teams weren’t in attendance than to know which clubs were. Still, it’s at least worth noting that each of the Mets, Yankees, Nationals, Red Sox, Rays, Twins, Cubs, Rangers, Marlins, Tigers, Pirates, Blue Jays, Diamondbacks and Indians were all reported to be attending the showcase. Obviously, it’s not an all-encompassing list.

Broadly speaking, if Kluber is indeed at a point in his rehab that inspires confidence, one would imagine the market for him will be robust. The extent to which clubs are willing to bet on a guaranteed contract on the two-time Cy Young winner will vary, but he should easily command a big league deal with plenty of incentives on top of whatever base the highest bidder will commit.

Kluber may be something of a lottery ticket at this point, but few gambles come with such pronounced upside. From 2014-18, the right-hander was one of the game’s premier pitchers, working to a combined 2.85 ERA while striking out 28.5 percent of the hitters he faced against just a 5.2 percent walk rate. Only three of the 179 qualified starting pitchers in that time period — Chris Sale, Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer — topped Kluber’s 23.3 K-BB%.

Since that time, however, he’s been limited to 36 2/3 innings by a fractured forearm (sustained when he was hit by a line drive), an oblique strain and a teres major strain. Traded from Cleveland to Texas last winter, Kluber pitched just one inning for the Rangers in 2020.

While most of the focus is understandably on Kluber, the presence of Swarzak and Cishek is certainly notable as well. Both righties are looking for rebounds of their own. Swarzak signed with the Phillies last winter but was released at the end of summer camp and didn’t sign with another club. A two-year, $14MM deal he signed with the Mets prior to the 2018 season proved regrettable, as shoulder issues torpedoed both of those seasons. However, back in 2017 Swarzak tossed 77 1/3 frames with a 2.33 ERA with 91 punchouts against just 22 walks.

Cishek, meanwhile, rattled off four straight seasons with a sub-3.00 ERA from 2016-19, leading to a $6MM deal with the White Sox last winter. He didn’t last on Chicago’s South Side, however, as he was roughed up for a 5.40 ERA in just 20 innings. Cishek’s control has been trending in the wrong direction the past couple of seasons, but he missed bats at his typical levels and didn’t see a velocity dip in 2020.

Steve Cishek would be a good addition to the Phillies bullpen. He will not be expensive to sign. If i was the Phillies I would also try to sign Kubler to bring a little bit more of stability to the starting rotation, but that depends on how much he is looking for 1 year deal because they are many others holes to solve in lineup and bullpen.

@Francys01 The problem with the Phillies is they don’t seem to be “in” on anyone significant. I have no idea why they wouldn’t be one of the teams reportedly watching Kluber throw, but they aren’t. I still don’t have a clear idea if they’re going to be rebuilding, retooling or trying to put a competitive team out there. They’re sort of in limbo.

@theodore That’s my theory as well. I think they can still compete this year if they make a few moves. Slow offseason makes it seem like the Phillies are doing nothing, but there’s still plenty of time. I’m just not confident in Middleton.

The Phillies are in on everyone, trust me. They are most definitely doing their due diligence on anyone with a pulse. Phillies policy of being hush hush isnt going to change, even with a new dictator in there. From what I’ve heard they are trying to unload Moniak, Hasely and Adonis Medina before they have Zero value at all, but arent against keeping all 3. The Andrew Benintendi and Marcus Semien rumors have substance

I’d love to give Cishek a try. He can’t be any worse than the rest of our lot. I say 1/$6MM. As for Kluber it would either be him or Anibal that I’d sign. I want Spencer to get as much of a full year in AAA as possible. Last year was a small sample, but he looked lost.

          @admirkir, what MLBTR wrote was:

          1) “The full list of teams in attendance isn’t known…”
          2) “it’d be more *notable* to learn which few teams *weren’t* in attendance…”
          3) “it’s at least worth *noting* that each of the Mets, Yankees, Nationals, Red Sox, Rays, Twins, Cubs, Rangers, Marlins, Tigers, Pirates, Blue Jays, Diamondbacks and Indians were all *reported* to be attending…”

They are doing what they are supposed to do. Reporting what’s known, be it real or rumor. They gave you the list of the known teams. Being upset that MLB did not provide a full list of attending teams and then saying MLBTR shouldn’t report any teams unless a complete list is known is an odd stand to take.

At the same time, ‘passed physical’ is relative.

It doesn’t mean perfect health, it means the team.accepts any risk in the defects they see. On a ‘healthy’ older pitcher it’s not unusual to see defects, tendon wear, etc in an elbow and yet they ‘passed.’

On a recovering from injury player it really remains buyer beware because the body isn’t 100% yet. There likely will be abnormalities remaining to work through.

Nice move by the agency to have Swarzak and Cisheck at what they knew would be a well attended showcase.

Cisheck looks to be the lowest risk here and that’s notable. I can understand a team with some depth taking a chance on Kluber but depending on him to be a cog in your rotation would be foolish.

I would think it should boil down to the team who can showcase the pitchers talent in an MLB setting. I mean, financially, the offers will be similar so , a team say like THE TIGERS, could offer to ease him into the season, providing all the time and assistance he needs and then when trading begins, he is ready. The Tigers can trade him directly into the mix of things, maximizing the direct showcasing of his talents on the MLB stage.

Kluber seems to be a solid option. Coming off two injury riddled years, he is probably a low ceiling/high floor guy at this point in his career.

I suspect he will receive a lot of similar offers allowing him to choose the team that best fits his needs.

NL West – The list of teams was specific and there was no additional “among others” tag, which would have been silly anyway after listing 14 teams. So I have to believe the list of teams in attendance was complete based on how it was written. Moreno has historically put little value on creating a winning pitching staff, even when the evidence overwhelmingly shows seasons are won and lost on pitching, not hitting.

Insanity = Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

It doesn’t mention how the actual showcase went for each player other than 90mph for Kluber. Imagine your future all depends on how well you throw 30+ times. That’s probably more nerve wracking than being in a game. At least you can have a bad outing as long as you have the contract in hand.

A team that has real flexibility about whether they’re going to expand their payroll this year or next, like the Blue Jays, should offer Kluber a fair all-incentive contract. A million base salary, then $5M per run of WAR. He puts up a 7 WAR Cy Young season, he earns his $36M.

Kluber really makes sense for a team that has a gap between the top of the rotation and the youth that is trying to establish itself in an organization.. This assumes an effective 1-2 starter combo & quality young pitchers with some thing to learn.

Kluber, who has seen his share of both success and adversity, would be a great mentor to the youth of an org. His presence also decreases the reliance on the prospects to contribute.

Conversely, If Kluber is signed by a team with a weak top of the rotation he becomes a big gamble. If a club does have a good top of the rotation but no real pitching prospects Kluber becomes a bigger part of the team’s success and therefore subject to greater pressure.. At Kluber’s age his value as an extra coach on the pitching staff should be part of his salary calculation.

Just out of curiosity, I was wondering if you all can tell me how you feel about this trade. I thought about it the other day and I thought that I may share it with you all.

Astros get: RHP Luis Castillo, OF Michael Siani (#7), RHP Tony Santillan (#10), SS Kyle Farmer
Reds get: SS Carlos Correa, RHP Forrest Whitley (#1)

This trade makes sense for both sides in my opinion, the Astros need an ace-type pitcher, like Castillo, especially with Verlander AND Greinke being free agents at the end of 2021. Castillo has 3 years of control entering 2021, so he has a lot more trade value than some pitchers on the market. Siani and Santillan are good players in the Reds’ minor league system with a lot of potential, and Farmer is in there for utility help in that infield.

For the Reds though, SS is a big need for them, and Correa is someone that they could extend long-term and can help keep the championship window open. Whitley is someone that I think may have to be in the trade, although if you prefer Bryan Abreu instead of Whitley, idc, both work in my eyes. Correa only has 1 year of control, but has a lot of value. I don’t know if I’m right or not, but I think one reporter said that it was “inevitable” that the Reds trade Castillo or Gray this offseason, so why not get better in the process?

So, let me know how you feel about the deal, and how I can improve it.

Refs would not do that because you’re entering the deal on Carlos who has one year left. They’re looking for young controllable talent. Needs more top prospects imho.

Thanks for the feedback. Would something like this make the deal work better?

Astros get: RHP Luis Castillo, RHP Tony Santillan (#10), SS Kyle Farmer

Reds get: SS Carlos Correa, RHP Forrest Whitley (#1)/RHP Bryan Abreu (#3), RHP Alex Santos (#7), and another top 15 prospect?

And that’s kinda crazy, because I’m a Reds fan, and I didn’t give them enough.

Just to get Castillo and nothing else it would take more then one year of Correa and Whitley. Castillo is an incredibly valuable MLB player at this time with who’s not a free agent until 2024.

How would you all make a Luis Castillo trade like this, with the basis of Castillo to Houston and Correa to Cincinnati, if it even makes sense…

Or could this type scenario even work with Castillo to Colorado and Story in Cincinnati, with prospects going both ways.

I’m not saying that I want Castillo traded, I’m saying that based off the information that we have been given in recent months, Castillo or Gray is “inevitable” to be traded, although I think it would more likely than not will be Gray, I thought that it may be a fun scenario to try out.

It might be fun, but it doesn’t seem to be one you’re particularly skilled at thus far. Can you draw pictures? Maybe you could draw a picture of Luis Castillo as an Astro instead. Maybe a coloring book?

Honestly I think it is highly unlikely that Cinci trades Castillo. If they did trade him then I agree with Yankeeclipper that they would would want young controllable talent back in return. I’m not sure what Houston could offer to make that trade happen but let’s say the Padres wanted to add Castillo I’m thinking the return would be something like Gore and Campusano for Castillo something like that. I’m not sure Houston has the tradeable pieces to get Castillo.

Correa’s value is not particularly high with only a single year of control. He’s also injury prone and will cost over $10M in 2021. They also have little chance of extending him as Correa is intent on testing free agency. Add all that up and Correa is a net negative to any deal with the Reds based on where they’re going and want to spend.

Castillo is one of the most valuable properties in the game. I don’t really believe the Reds want to or have to trade him, but they’ll listen knowing they’d get a haul for him. You say you’re a Reds fan, but the deals you’re constructing seem to undervalue Castillo as you’re actually adding additional Reds into the deal. Why limit this deal to the Astros? Castillo is one of the few players that all 29 other teams would want. You get to restock your farm with global top 100 prospects by dealing Castillo. That’s the only reason they’d consider moving him.

The Reds are trying to shed payroll, not add it. There is little to no chance the Reds would have interest in extending Correa and probably even less chance of Correa signing it. Trading three years of control over Castillo for one year of Correa and the possibility that Whitley can still be something is a one sided trade in the Astros favor

I believe Kluber’s ship has sailed. The Indians know when to trade/release pitchers. Buyers beware!

Caleb- The Reds need more in that deal as Corea is a FA after this year and are the Reds willing to spend more in 2022 to keep Corea? Trading your Ace and a solid #1 in the league would require more prospects that are cheap, have upside and are controllable. Isually if you trade your Ace you are not competing fit a WS that year. I wouldn’t do that deal if I were the Reds. For the Stro’s – heck yea I would do that deal. Whitley has stumbled in recent years and their big league starters outside of Grienke are young.

Thanks for the feedback. I totally agree with some of your pointers, about the Reds needing more. I think the Reds could ask for either RHP Hunter Brown (#6) or RHP Alex Santos (#7) as well, maybe even another guy in the top 15, which I’m not opposed to doing in this type deal. And this would make more sense, in my opinion, if Bauer re=signs, which seems decently unlikely, but hopefully it happens.

The Reds are getting Chick Corea? He would be an amazing stadium organist!

If you want to rebuild your value there will be no better place than the NL central. Hoyer and the Cubs should be all over him for a 1 year deal.
