Dodgers Have Considered Marcus Semien At Third Base

By Steve Adams | January 18, 2021 at 3:09pm CDT

The Dodgers were in the mix for DJ LeMahieu prior to his agreement to return to the Yankees, but Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic cautions that L.A.’s miss on LeMahieu doesn’t guarantee a reunion with Justin Turner at third base. The Dodgers are mulling potential alternatives at the hot corner, per Rosenthal, including longtime A’s shortstop Marcus Semien.

There’s surely an aspect of due diligence at play here. President of baseball ops Andrew Friedman and his crew wouldn’t be doing their jobs if they didn’t consider all avenues, but Semien nevertheless creates an interesting option for the Dodgers — particularly if he’s signed to a multi-year deal. Corey Seager wouldn’t be displaced for Semien in 2021, Rosenthal notes, but Seager is a free agent next winter. Semien would give the Dodgers a fallback in the event that Seager signs elsewhere upon reaching the open market. As a Scott Boras client, he seems unlikely to sign an extension this spring.

The market for Semien has yet to fully take shape, as is the case with most position players in this glacial free agency period. The Reds and Phillies are among the teams known to be looking for a shortstop, and the Twins have increasingly been reported to be considering shortstop additions as well. Fansided’s Robert Murray reported awhile back that Semien had garnered interest at other positions; his ability to play an above-average shortstop should carry over and allow him to play quality defense at a less-demanding position like second or third.

The question regarding Semien, of course, is what to expect from him at the plate. His 2020 season didn’t come close to his MVP-caliber 2019 campaign, although it’s also at least anecdotally worth pointing out that Semien improved after a slow start to the year and raked through Oakland’s eight-game playoff run. That’s a small sample, of course, but that’s true of the entire 2020 season.

In many ways, Semien exemplifies the difficulty in evaluating a player during this year’s two-month slate of games. His agents at Wasserman surely will argue that 2019 was the beginning of a breakout and that his torrid finish to the year shows he was on his way to replicating that production over a larger sample. More skeptical teams might point to the fact that Semien was more of a league-average bat prior to 2019. An average hitter capable of providing above-average defense at shortstop is still a very good player, but there’d be a major gap between how that player and the 2019 Semien are compensated.

There’s no evidence that Semien is any sort of priority for the Dodgers at the moment, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to hear that they’ve also considered a handful of other options. Turner, after all, is reported to be seeking a four-year contract that’d run through his age-39 season, so it’s more than understandable if the Dodgers and other clubs are mulling alternatives.

It’s also worth noting, too, that the Dodgers appear willing to spend at the position. Pat Ragazzo, who first reported the terms of LeMahieu’s agreement to return to the Bronx, also reported that the Dodgers offered LeMahieu a four-year deal worth a total of $60MM. That’s two years and $30MM shy of where he landed, of course, but we don’t know when that offer came in, either. A reunion with Turner seems likelier than a deal with Semien, but it’s still of some note that Los Angeles was seemingly willing to go multiple years at a significant rate for an infielder other than Turner.

I think Simien is going to be kind of a bust for whoever signs him. He has a long term history of producing below average offense. People forget about the juiced ball in 2019. I don’t care about what any player did in 2019. Josh Bell and Pete Alonso (amongst many others) looked like superstars in 2019 solely because of the juiced ball. Even those 2 players have a better chance a recapturing their offensive magic at some point in their careers than Simien does. Simien absolutely proved he is incapable of consistent offensive production without the juiced ball. He should be signed as a starting shortstop with good defense and slight offensive upside. In other words: Simien should be paid like a #8 or #9 hitter. That’s the only way his contract won’t be a bust. I hope for the best for Simien but anybody that points to 2019 only as a reason to sign a player for offensive purposes is making a mistake. Especially if it is a player that showed no signs of producing at that level for years prior to 2019 and then had a bad offensive season after 2019. I know he got hot at the end of the season but that is the only thing that should matter. 2019 should be removed from the equation. He is a poor hitter that got hot at the end of a shortened season. I have heard some pundits saying that Simien is worth $100 million. That is idiotic. I know he won’t get that. Simien isn’t worth anywhere near half that. Take all of his offensive stats through 2018 and combine them with all of his 2020 stats. That’s what Simien is most likely to produce. That isn’t worth much. The juiced ball is gone. It was in full force during the 1 year Simien was a good offensive player.

I’d like to see Semien at 3b for the Mets (and also fallback in case Lindor leaves). Is 3 years/45 million crazy? Then we trade JD Davis for prospects. Would be interesting to see projections of WAR for Semien vs Davis at 3b.

@BovineCrab I am kind of agreeing with you here. His hard ball hit rate (exit velocity) is below league average and no where near Bell. He makes contact, but below average clip. He is a hard guy to determine his value after I looked further into the metrics.

Please No to Semien – Enter the trade market before this LAD

Have to think LAD is standing tall on a 2+1 small buyout yr 3 with Turner- Still cant believe some team just doesnt jump in and offer a slight overpay on a full 3 yrs for him – He would be such a good fit in so many places and if you have to overpay a tad this is the type of player to do it with (comes with great attitude/culture)

Personally, Id be fine riding CT3 Rios Muncy and giving Smith some reps there till the deadline then make a call~

Maybe get a guy like Todd Frazier for 2 mill flat from fa…they could also get a project like Franco for pretty cheap as well if they think they can fix him

Fudge it tho, I say stay all internal, bring up Ruiz and let Smith put on a mitt not glove and lets see a Rios/Smith platoon at 3b Smith/Ruiz/barnes platoon at C

Deadline we can still do something worst case

Pass on that idea. Part of the reason Smith is so valuable is the production he puts up as a C. You move him to 3B and he’s less elite. Plus don’t know what kind of glove he has at 3B. Then you bring up an unproven bat in Ruiz. Dodger rookie success doesn’t mean every rookie will be successful. We’re due for some busts. You’ve created a lot more uncertainty compared to bringing back Turner or signing another 3B. Most likely scenario is still Turner on a 2-year with a buyout.

Way Smiths bats been playing up I think they want to get him established in the field sooner rather than later. Theres already been plenty of chatter him playing 3b and he took practice reps already last year

Would not detract from pt would actually open it all up for other various players – Id have him log starts at both C and 3B

These are all No turner options tho

You’d rather have Ruiz or Turner? That’s what it boils down to. These three players for two positions. Even with a declining bat I’d take Turner at 3B and keeping Smith at C over a makeover for Smith and Ruiz at C. Makes no sense to move Smith until Ruiz is actually ready to push him and/or produce. He hasn’t exactly dominated minor league pitching and chatter about his declining glove.

Smith has shown a lot of maturity at the plate. Even if he regresses at the plate he’s still an above average bat for a C, less so for 3B. Maybe he’s still in play for 3B in the future. But he has to keep raking and Ruiz has to be ready. Maybe Cartaya in the distant future. I don’t see this move happening in 2021. A lot more risk than signing Turner for 2/3 years.

Smith is only playing 3B on days he doesn’t catch. Once a week max

They want his bat in the lineup everyday. That’s it. Ruiz Still starts 2021 in AAA and he’s a highly valuable trade piece. Barnes will back up just like 2020

Not my call ofc in the end but if it comes down to it (and theres a good chance) you very well could be seeing this platoon

Between Ct3 Rios Smith Muncy Beaty I dont think its an end of the world scenario- Dodgers love versatility, Smith would get a start a week at 3b for 2021. I love Justin Turner just as much as the next Dodger fan but theres a great probability hes not with us next season.

As much as I like Turner, being a “great clubhouse guy” and having a great attitude are not substitutes for production. Ask the Angels about Pujols. Turner’s bat is going the wrong direction, and his D has slipped as well. Worse that that, he spends quite a bit of time not playing due to one ailment or another. Would love to have Turner back, but there’s no way the Dodgers should even consider his 4-year ask, or even 3 for that matter.
As far as Semien, he’s like a lot of FA’s out there: which version of himself is going to step on the field day after day. With the slow market maybe they get a bargain, but I’d be hesitant to offer big money for his track record.

He might not be a .950+ OPS, 150 OPS+ guy, but he’s still had a 132 OPS+ and .876 OPS the last two seasons. THat’s still really good production.

I agree with you regarding not giving Turner a 4 year contract at his age. I think most of us love him and his bat. If the NL had the “DH” then maybe 2 plus an option year. However, considering we might not be able to sign Seager in 2022 because Scott Boras is his agent. Maybe management is looking ahead, plus also the possibility of Arenado. Colorado wants to trade him now and he also has an opt out next year. Let’s see what Andrew does…….

I think that the Dodgers should just sign Justin Turner for 3 years. After those 3 years, the Padres might be looking to cut money, and then they could trade for Manny Machado and bring him back. I know this sounds crazy, but I think it could happen. Nvm I’m just crazy.

If the Padres farm system is as good as it is supposed to be they should be able to blend in young cheap talent with more proven expensive talent unless they screw it up. Lots of ifs but certainly very possible they keep this up for years. That said, I doubt the Dodgers would trade for Machado again. He was underwhelming as a Dodger and his character was a bad fit. And yes Padres won’t trade him to the Dodgers unless it’s a complete fire sale.

Lifetime 121 ops+ still only 27/28 with 8 more years left on deal. Throughout his career he has never been consistent one year 108, next 130 then 110 ops+, he could fall off tomorrow. He is still in his prime and is a slightly above average batter what about when that goes away and you are still shelling out 30 million a year till he is 36/37?

I don’t get the hype around Semien. He is a good defensive shortstop who has been a below average hitter (< 100 OPS+) in all seasons he's played except 2019, when he suddenly became good enough to earn MVP votes. What makes teams think that they get the 2019 semien and not the below average offensive player he's been for the rest of his career?

The dodgers need a good RH bat. Turner is the perfect fit for that lineup. I wouldn't hate a trade for Bryant if they want to go that route. But signing a below average bat is useless; just give Rios a proper chance then and get a RH backup like Frazier or Jedd Gyorko.

Teams don’t care about any stats from the shortened 2020 season, you do. Semien missed a huge chance he’d normally get to make amends.

You look at his .679 OPS in 211 ABs and go “he’s back to being below league average again”, which makes you look incredibly foolish because he then OPS’d 1.344 in the playoffs, standing up when it mattered the most, that’s what teams look at.

Stop caring about 2020 stats, they only matter in terms of personal career numbers, on their own they’re largely worthless. Can’t wait to get 162 in again so we don’t have to keep having this conversation!

A bad idea overall. 0.713 OPS for a 3B is terrible. Plus it’s not like he’s going to take a discount for playing 3B. As a shortstop he’s less bad and has more value. Have to look at the context of him playing 3B in 2021. You’re trying to make the team better or at least equal. Putting Semien at 3B most likely weakens your team.

If he had 3 good years in 2017, 18 and 19 before having a year off in 2020 (which happened to quite a lot of players) no one would care and he would still be a top FA. However the quoted statement of semien being a below average hitter every season but 2019 stands regardless of what happened in 2020.

btw he ops’d 1.344 in the Astros series, he went 3 for 12 against the CHW. So basically 1 hot 3 game stretch with 8 hits against a team that was without its 2 best pitchers.

        Let’s hope we play 162!

Semien is polarizing because he’s can be viewed as average or very good depending on the measurements you chose to value. His OPS+ is average. Fangraphs doesn’t like him. But his Baseball Reference WAR has been over 4 in all of his full seasons since his first full. year in Oakland. And in his last full season, he was a monster.

I also think its interesting that people want people to resign Turner because Semien wasn’t particularly great until his year 28 season, which again, was phenomenal.

Justin Turner couldn’t even stay in the majors until he was 28. Could it be that Semien, like Turner, just needed more time to develop his bat, and finally figured it out later in his career — just like Turner?

Semien deserves the attention he is getting, because he’s a solid fielder who has slowly become a top threat with his bat, and that includes 2020, where he was heating up at the end of a short, strange season, notably when it counted most.

You want to focus on the regular season. But you cannot ignore what he did when the games mattered most.

Not easy finding the next Turner and Muncy. For every one of those guys you have many who flame out. Semien had a great 2019 no doubt and has upside value. But he has been closer to average for most of his career so naturally there is skepticism until he puts up another stellar season and he less value as a 3B. Another team looking at him as a SS should be willing to pay more for him versus at 3B.

The difference between Turner/Muncy and Semien is that the Dodgers acquired the first 2 for free (waivers/released) and Semien would cost more than $10 MM per year (mlbtr prediction is 1 year -$14 MM).

So, you would be getting a relatively expensive free agent, moving him off his main position where he does provide some defensive value and hope that he can replicate his 1 good season.

Why? Besides his glove JT has been better than Arenado hitting wise and he has sustainable home and away stats unlike Arenado. Also its way easier for the Dodgers to sign Turner for a certain sum of money than Trading someone like Ruiz, Gray, or Lux for Arenado

“Besides his glove” lol way to gloss over a MASSIVE part of Areando’s value.

Turner is getting old and tried to kill his teammates by not wearing a mask during the WS celebrations after testing positive.

Arenado mashes away from Denver too, please lay off the pipe. Arenado absolutely mashed at Dodger Stadium in 2017, 2018 and 2019 in more games than in 2020 when he did nothing in 5 games there. Trading is not more difficult than signing someone, GMs have been quoted be saying they’ve been called and completed in under an hour before.

        All wrong.

So you think it would be easier for the Dodgers to take on Arenado’s massive contract and still have to trade multiple top prospects? Also since Friedman has been GM the Dodgers have rarely traded multiple prospects, (disregarding the Betts trade0 this is why the Dodgers have such a successful home-grown team. Also by taking on Arenado’s contract that would limit the Dodgers negotiations in extending Seager, Buehler, and Bellinger.
Not saying Arenado is a bad player and he would help the Dodgers but it doesnt make sense.

Colorado would have to kick in a lot of cash if they wanted more than salary relief from trading Arenado. If they were at all willing to do that I suspect it would have happened already.

No he doesn’t. He’s a career .263 hitter away from Denver. .322/.471/.793 slash. That’s mashing?

And while he did hit well in Dodger Stadium in 2017 & 2019, he hit .211 with a .268/.447/.716 slash line in 2018. So you’re wrong there too.

He’s been just fine out of Colorado. Since 2015, he’s had a 119, 116, 126, 104 and 118 wRC+ away from Coors. Plus you can’t assume if he was traded to another team, he would automatically put up the same numbers he has on the road now with the Rockies.

Dodgers trying to gain leverage now that djl is off the board. Not sure this makes much sense, but I also didn’t think turner, muncy and chris Taylor would have their improbable turnarounds with us. I could see him being a nice bridge piece/backup in the sense they can’t resign seager. If they rework his swing they could get considerable value here if it works out.

LAD could opt to go with Semien at 3 for less than $30ML or JT at slightly higher for 2+1 (M-Opt) and still add an Arm(RP-Yates) for 2 yr deal! Many options available yet. Big Chunk coming off PR next offseason! Luxury Tax may not be much of a concern!
Gotta thank Preller is SD for motivating LADs this offseason!

Except it wouldn’t just cost ruiz, who yes is redundant for dodgers. It would cost lux, ruiz and like grey just to get conversations started. It’s cool to be reasonable but what will be asked of dodgers isn’t feasible from dodgers standpoint who could potentially have holes forming with seagers impending free agency and bellingers approaching

The Dodgers system doesn’t even look very good anymore with all they’ve graduated. Grey is an older prospect who’s good, but not elite and the Reds are set at C with Barnhart/Stephenson. Idk what else we’d want…..that they’d give up lol

Yeah just 3 top 100 guys

30(!) of the guys on their 40 man are 30 years old or younger. They graduated 2 additional top 100 guys in Graterol and Lux, last year’s 2nd prospect in all of baseball. They have a surplus of young pitching that has already exceeded in the majors

You can look at the farm ranking technical requirements and make jabs. But this team can acquire just about any player they want fairly easily, if they so choose and they are available

That’s the definition of a strong system

Another piece of speculative nonsense. Semien is little more than a glorified utility infielder. He makes about as much sense as the Dodgers regular 3B as LeMahieu, and that didn’t pan out because it made no sense either.

If you give Turner a 2 year contract, he finishes it at age 38. The same age DJ LeMahieu finishes his 6 year 90 million contract for 15 million per year.

Result for Turner I’d imagine everyone can live with and be slightly unhappy feels like it would be a 3 year contract for 40 million. 15-15-10. Worst case: 42-45 million.

But someone is obviously going to have to budge and I think both sides are willing to wait this out for a while more. Turner probably hoping Springer goes to the Mets (I think he will) and Blue Jays make a better offer with Springer off the board.

Regardless, at the end of the day, I think the Dodgers will match and keep him – unless perhaps someone goes way overboard but it does not feel remotely like that is going to happen – especially in this Covid economy.

This seems about right. A couple of months ago Roberts made a remark about Turner that made it sound like it was up to the player to decide where he wanted to go. I think he’s in the process of finding out what the market will bear and once that happens the Dodgers make him a competitive offer. This is pretty much what happened four years ago. Either way they aren’t going to bid against themselves.

I think the Dodgers are waiting to see if the DH rule will be in place this year before they commit to Turner. But they risk losing him all together. 4 years is just thrown out there from Turners camp to start negotiations. Need to lock him up for 2-3 with a team option.

Siemen shouldn’t even be considered. His agent is looking for 100 million package? Then he won’t be a dodger.

Semien strikes me as exactly the kind of player who should be getting a one year deal- we are in uncertain financial times, and he is coming off a bad year. Why not sign a one year contract, hopefully perform well, and hit free agency a year again a year from now under what may be much better circumstances? (I know he isn’t that young at 30 YO, but still seems to me he’d be better off going the one year route)

Hes arguably the highest upside SS on the market right now, if he takes a one year pillow deal, he ends up maybe the 6th best SS on the FA market next year.

If he gets a 3/39M offer or something, he should take it.

I haven’t been a big fan of Semien, but he really is starting to impress me to some degree. That aside, I think Semien has the ability to play the hit corner. If A-Rod could convert to the hot corner after playing SS early on in his career, Semien has the same abilities as A-Rod to some degree. Semien will eventually be moved off SS in 3-4 years anyways. If he can excel at the hot corner, his stock will increase significantly. This putting him into a tough situation. If he sign a long term contract now at potentially a discount price for the 3B position, will not give him maximum value later on. If he takes a year or two contract, he has a chance of getting hurt or declining and ruining his stock. Thank god his agent is Boras. Because Boras can sell his mother for 759 million dollars for 20 years.

If this isn’t sarcasm, that’s such an awful comparison. A-Rod’s bat fit at third base. He’s one of the best hitters of all time. Semien’s had one season where he was an above average hitter.

The Braves should sign Turner, they won’t sign Ozuna and Turner is a good bat with lesser power, Maybe in 2 years Riley will figure it out in Atlanta or not. Riley just doesn’t hit enough even if he has fine power and both are decent fielders….. not Brooks Robinson or Clete Boyer but decent.

Seeing Atlanta probably is done spending on Smyly and Morton it’s probably a pipe dream.

Seager was drafted as a SS (you could look it up). Many are confused about this due to all the speculation at the time about how he was too big to play the position and for sure he’d be moved to 3B because no way did he have the right frame size for SS. The speculation was wrong, obviously. Other than a handful of games he has always been a SS.

I would like to see the Braves Sign Semien 1 year 14 million and let him Rebuild his value, then go make a trade for Andrew Benientendi & resign Adam Duvall spending about 22 million and getting 3 players who can really help. Riley isn’t the answer right now, he could be but right now ATL can’t afford for him to get 140+ starts at 3Rd in 2021.

I know Semien’s agent is looking for $100M+ contract for him but in my opinion, there’s no way this guy gets a dime over 3/$40M and that might even be too much. He’ll probably end up having to settle for a 1 year deal between $8-$12M. If it ends up on the low end, he could very well end up back in Oakland for one more year.
