Marlins Sign Ross Detwiler To Major League Contract

By Connor Byrne | January 3, 2021 at 9:29am CDT

TODAY: Detwiler will earn $850K in guaranteed money, Craig Mish reports (via Twitter), with another $100K available in potential incentives.

JANUARY 1: The Marlins have signed left-hander Ross Detwiler to a major league contract, Craig Mish of Sportsgrid tweets. It’s a one-year deal for the CAA Sports client.

Detwiler was the sixth overall pick of the Nationals in 2007, and while he did stick with the organization through 2014, he has bounced around since then. He spent parts of 2015-20 with the Rangers, Braves,  Cleveland, Athletics, Mariners and White Sox, and there were multiple independent league stints mixed in there.

Although Detwiler has seldom posted impressive production in the majors, he did perform well out of the White Sox’s bullpen last season, finishing with a 3.20 ERA/3.90 FIP with 6.86 K/9, 2.29 BB/9 and an excellent 58.3 percent groundball rate in 19 2/3 innings of work. Detwiler spent all of 2020 as a reliever, and if that’s his role in Miami, he could help a bullpen that ranked last in the National League in ERA (5.50) and FIP (5.65) a season ago.

If you actually think about it, it is.

A lot of people have quotes that they like and hope they can one day use them in the perfect situation in regular conversation. Tom goes counter to that belief and forces the quote into the conversation. Working the conversation around the quote rather than the quote into the conversation.

        It’s art.

Also, when I grow up I want to be a principal…or a caterpillar.

Darkside830 – Did you forget that the 2020 season was abbreviated? It could actually be a plus because he has a fresher arm compared to other relief pitching options. You’re logic is also flawed because it’s like saying no free agents are worthy of signing due to a smaller sample size. Especially in the case of a FA like Detwiler, his deal will not be more than a 2 million guarantee.

Side note – as OofAndYikes notes, you should probably be more concerned about JTR resigning than a measily mid reliever signing the Marlins just made…

i dont work for the Phillies. I don’t have to “focus” on anything they do. and what you said about the short season can be applied to every other pitcher out there as well

        • stretch123

Obviously you don’t work for the Phil’s which is why you’re here bud… and my point exactly. Everyone experienced a short season.

If the Marlins start dumping all their good talent for no real reason and not getting appropriate talent in return, then I’d say they are the same old Marlins. Otherwise, this deal is just meh.. not exactly a good move, but isn’t a terrible deal idk…

The best thing to come out of the shortened season of 2020 is we get Marlins fans beating their chests now, digging into Mets, and Phillie faithful.

I mean the Marlins made the post season by completely owning the Phillies. So they have every right to taunt the Phillies faithful atleast.

        • MetsFan22

It was a fluke season. I wouldn’t taunt anyone if I was them.

        • MarlinsFanBase

Yeah, because beating your division rivals and making the playoffs in a season when 2/3rds of your games were against division rivals, means absolutely nothing…especially when those games accounted for more than half the total of division games in a 162-game season.

I guess the Mets need more games against the Pirates and other divisions’ last place teams instead of so many games against their own division rivals.

        • VonPurpleHayes

The idea that it was a “fluke” season is ridiculous. It was a unique season to be sure, with lots of different struggles, but it certainly wasn’t a fluke season. Also, I think we can expect more of the same in 2021. It will definitely not be a full season. Schedules will be altered due to the pandemic.

If you think this move was awful then I can’t wait to hear what you think about the Braves giving Drew Smyly for 11 million after sucking for five years and finding success in a similarly limited sample size as this guy. Or maybe the Giants giving Gausman 18 million after almost being out of baseball for just having an OKAY abbreviated season. The marlins were at least smart enough to pay a reasonable price here for the same quality of garbage other teams have been worshiping this entire off season.

Jamie Moyer didn’t believe in sabermetrics and algorithms since they were invented after he started his career, and look how long he pitched. Maybe Detwiler’s ignorance to advanced statistics will help in a similar manner.

Happy for Ross. He brought his Raptor into a shop I ran in Lake StL Mo(suburbs of StL). He may not have turned into a stud but he’s had what most would dream of as a Major league career. The demand for left handed pitchers hasn’t changed a ton over the years

Don’t mind that the White Sox did t bring him back, but he certainly is worth a minor league deal, if for no other reason than insurance against multiple injuries. He is left-handed, and can throw three innings, sometimes successfully.

For 6 teams since 2015 Ross Detwiler has a 6.27/1.70 ERA/WHIP, 254 HA, and a 130/89 K/BB in 202 1/3 IP. His FIP during this time of strife and decadence is a much more appealing 5.81. And his WAR is (-2.1). Yet the Marlins saw in their heart of hearts to sign Detwiler to a 1 yr deal. Terms have yet to be announced. He’s living proof of the long time baseball adage that lefties have 9 lives. He was the sixth overall pick of the Nationals in 2007 behind David Price, Mike Moustakas, Josh Vitters, Daniel Moskos, and Matt Wieters. Moskos had a 31 game cup of coffee for the Pirates back in 2011. Vitters played in 36 games for the Cubs in 2012 and proceeded to go 12 for 99 with a couple HR’s and 5 RBI. He started his career 5 for 67. The Marlins pen finished last in the NL in both ERA (5.50) and FIP (5.65).

I’m prob one of the rare pure Marlins haters out there. I think what that franchise has done, especially over the last few season has been extremely bad for baseball. But before the 2020 season, i said watch out for them… they might have something brewing down there… now, they haven’t done anything to get super excited about for 2021, but keep an eye on them… they are a couple moves away from really making something happen down there in the basement of America lol

No you were spewing the same hate prior to 2020. Look at how that turned out? So please continue. Hate stronger and louder.

And continue to keep your eye on the Marlins bc very soon they will be contending for that division title. Go Fish!

I agree that this isn’t a major move, but it is a solid move for the bullpen. This is another piece added as the Marlins are focusing on bullpen this season. Accumulation of pieces is the goal.

        • bravesfan

Correct, I was spewing the same hate until they made a bunch of really nice moves last offseason. I still think what they have done was bad for baseball and I hold that opinion true today. Those are the type of teams that cause young kids to look for other sports instead of this great game.

Always liked this guy. Seemed like he should have been a groundball machine against RH and a bat breaker against LH. He was always missing the correct strategy. I wonder if he has figured things out.
