Mets Sign Brandon Drury To Minor-League Deal

By Anthony Franco | January 8, 2021 at 3:49pm CDT

3:49pm: Drury will earn $1.55MM if he makes it to the majors, Jon Heyman of MLB Network tweets. His deal could be worth up to $2.05MM.

8:49am: The Mets are signing Brandon Drury to a minor-league contract, reports Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic (Twitter link). As Rosenthal notes, that’ll reunite him with general manager Jared Porter, who was in the Diamondbacks’ front office during the tail end of Drury’s time in Arizona.

Drury has played in the big leagues in each of the past six seasons. After a pair of decent years with the D-Backs, he’s fallen off precipitously since going to the Yankees in the February 2018 three-team trade that sent Steven Souza Jr. to the desert. Over the past three seasons (spanning 582 plate appearances), Drury has just a .205/.254/.346 line with 16 home runs as a Yankee and Blue Jay. He was outrighted off Toronto’s 40-man roster in September.

Nevertheless, there’s little harm for the Mets in bringing Drury in as a depth option. He has plenty of experience at second and third base and in the corner outfield, with some intermittent time at shortstop and first base. The 28-year-old will look to earn a role as a right-handed hitting utility piece.

They gave up all that prospect capital to trade for Lindor only to have him sit behind Brandon Drury in the depth chart this season.

People can be called out for sucking at their role in any job. You could go to your local Walmart and tell someone they suck if they are.

Your original point sucked and so does your second. Patrons paying Drury big money to be bigtime garbage have a right to speak negatively.

Crap like this is garbage for baseball. It reminds me how the Astros and Mlb treated the players differently then others. Players shouldn’t be immune from punishment for rule breaking. One person shouldn’t be destroyed when it was a group effort. Sad times for MLB

Back at, arguably, the peak of the PED days, the home-run battle between McGuire and Sosa “saved” baseball.
Maybe MLB need to stop “looking the other way” on this so there is a better chance for hitters to provide more of what people (normally) pay for?

Bonds, McGuire, Sosa DID save baseball. Bonds saved San Francisco alone from being sold. Peds are never a good idea, but Mlb and Hall of Fame shouldn’t punish past players for it. Piazza is sitting in the Hall and is a known peds user along with many others. It was an era, just like the juiced ball we’ve been seeing these past years.

Yeah that was the main cause of the increase in spin rate that mysteriously came out of nowhere for Verlander and Cole, Not analytics and coaching. This is my theory. Trevor Bauer was definitely using a foreign substance last season too which probably is the cause of his huge spin rate increase for last year. There is actually a really well made video about Bauer on YouTube that talks about it that is worth a watch

Brandon Drury had a decent run for the D’Backs a lifetime ago. Who knows, these are sometimes the kinds of dopey signings that pay off. Not saying that it will but, on a minor league deal, it’s low risk/medium reward. The Yankees were also involved in a signing with their minor league deal for Jhoulys Chacin. At least Drury received the all-important invitation to ST.

I don’t think the Mets should give up the years and money it would take for Springer. I think Jackie Bradley Jr would be a good option. The Mets need a defender in CF that can cover some range if Dominic Smith is going to be in LF. He will be a lot cheaper and would probably take a 1 or 2 year deal and make some incredible defensive plays.

I’ll give it to you man, the Mets made an incredible move with that trade and killed two birds with one stone by addressing the need of a big bat with amazing defense and a legit proven pitcher who is a legit #2 starter. I still see them adding a Paxton or an odorizzi to the pitching staff and a Bradley or Kiermier for center field. They are ready to complete, I’ll be the first to admit I was wrong. The braves need to add Ozuna or Brantley and bring back Melancon or Greene or go and get Brad Hand or Archie Bradley this off-season to fill the hole of the players that left.

I know it sounds weird but I enjoy the competition and rivalry. For me it makes it more fun when you got good teams to go up against. The Mets got a deep lineup now. When you add a defensive center fielder it will only make them better. I just hope the braves put Pache in centerfield opening day cause I Inciarte is broken. He’s a Hell of a guy but he has gone downhill fast.

I don’t know though, if the Mets did sign springer, that offense would be very good, and the OF defense would turn into well above average… I know it would eat up their remaining cap space, but I feel like it would make them extremely formidable
