Tigers Sign Miguel Del Pozo To Minors Deal

By Mark Polishuk | January 7, 2021 at 2:00pm CDT

The Tigers announced that left-hander Miguel Del Pozo has been signed to a minor league contract.  Del Pozo chose to become a free agent following the season, after he was outrighted off the Pirates’ roster during the summer.

Del Pozo has been hit hard over his 13 career MLB innings, with a total 12.46 ERA from 9 1/3 innings with the Angels in 2019 and then 3 2/3 frames for Pittsburgh last season.  Del Pozo has more walks (13) than strikeouts (13) as a big leaguer, an extreme version of control issues he displayed early in his pro career, though he has seemingly gotten his walks under control as he rose up the minor league ladder.

Over 386 1/3 career innings in the Angels, Rangers, and Marlins farm systems, Del Pozo posted a 4.28 ERA, 25.8 K%, and 10.2% walk rate.  He has worked almost exclusively as a reliever throughout his career, and he joins Locke St. John and Ian Krol as left-handed minor league signing for Detroit within the last month.

I get it a ‘depth’ move by Big Al….Tired of waiting to sign a couple of legit bats…no more depth moves or Joe Average signings like Grossman…give me something-to be a little excited about….

Ovbisously, he’s not going to be a reuglar in the Tigers’ bullpen, but I have never seen a guy with worse control. Twice, he walked 3 batters without recording an out in 2020.

Gives up a home run to next batter

“Should I go get him now?? ”

“No, keep him in. Let’s see how he reacts”

        (hits batter with next pitch)

        “Interesting”

@mlb1225 sounds like my career pitching line in little league. I walked at least
4-5 batters in a row, never recorded an out and may have injured the catcher trying to block the balls in the dirt or dive and jump all over the place trying to catch what i threw. Never pitched before that game. Did not even practice. We needed a pitcher and back then I could throw strikes from centerfield. Would have been better off trying to pitch from out there instead of the mound.

They wouldn’t but that would have been the only way for me to put the ball in the strike zone. I stunk horribly trying to pitch from the mound. My catcher would not have been lying if he had pulled a Crash Davis and told the batters not to dig in because he had no idea where the ball was going. I was throwing behind guys……. Lucky i never hit one of the poor saps that I walked.

8% strike out rate… Tigers obviously need help in the sabermetrics department.

If it were 16% he would get a major league contract. At 24% we would be debating how many years and AAV. At 8% you get a minor league contract and a chance to sort it out for $20-$25k a year. Don’t make it out to be any more significant than it seems.

If the plate was high and outside, he would be an elite closer.

More Dumpster diving by Al. If we had some talented players who could play at the MLB level he wouldn’t have to fill the minors with garbage

      Riddle- mediocre AAAA player
      Reyes- decent AAA player
      Del Pozo- mediocre AA player
      Such was the 2020 Pirates.
Unfortunately, this is as exciting as it gets for Bucco fans since these three players will NOT be Pirates in 2021.

Del Pozo is the worst pitcher I have ever seen on a major league diamond with the possible exception of the Blade. Shelton should have never put him in a game.

Does a GM who won’t respond to a chugging contest challenge belong in baseball? I may be old school, but this is still baseball, right? We still have standards, don’t we?

Well, I guess there is no reason to sign up for Fox Sports Detroit this season. Hulu is much cheaper when you don’t pay for live events.
