Astros, Carlos Correa Avoid Arbitration

By TC Zencka | February 6, 2021 at 10:22am CDT

The Astros and star shortstop Carlos Correa agreed on a one-year, $11.7MM deal for 2021, per MLB Network’s Jon Heyman (via Twitter). The two sides avoid a potentially contentious arbitration hearing in the process. The Astros ultimately gave some ground after submitting a $9.75MM arbitration figure as counter to Correa’s own $12.5MM submission. Correa is rpresented by Jon Rosen of WME.

Coming in above the midpoint may be a small concession on the Astros’ part, especially if it keeps relations cordial heading into Correa’s final season before free agency. Correa has expressed a desire to stay in Houston long-term, though the club has shown a willingness to let superstars walk. They have, after all, watched Gerrit Cole and George Springer leave in free agency in consecutive seasons. If Correa does not sign a long-term extension, he’s set to join stacked free agent class of shortstops next winter that could also feature Francisco Lindor, Trevor Story, Javier Baez, Andrelton Simmons, Marcus Semien, and Corey Seager.

Even among that stellar group of shortstops, Correa stands out as a two-way superstar with 6.6 bWAR per 600 plate appearances and 10.4 defensive runs saved per 1,300 innings over his career. Those numbers in a single season would indeed place Correa in the highest echelon of stud shortstops, a potential he has flashed at times both in the regular season and playoffs. The 26-year-old has struggled to stay healthy over the course of a full season, however. He has appeared in more than 110 games just one time through his first six seasons.

        • Yankee Clipper

P17: Thing is, he’s been atop the leaderboards (top 4) for ss and he has youth in his side, along with Seager, to be poached next offseason by any high-budget team in need of a ss (Please not the Yankees!)

Cheating, not cheating, either way he’s young and has a good resume for FA. It’ll be interesting to see how much he’s valued after this full season, especially if he’s healthy the whole year.

        • Yankee Clipper

One additional point I forgot to make specifically about Correa, but may apply to Seager as well – I wonder about his ability to stay at SS for the long-term because of his size. Although his height isn’t prohibitive (slightly taller than), he does have a bigger frame, and I’m think that may be the combination ripe for injuries down the road if he isn’t shifted. But, who knows, Jeter played there for 20 years, literally….

One thing about Correa is he works his butt off, especially on defense.

Underrated observation. Quieter known cheaters like Mookie and Springer have shown a shut mouth can get them well-paid.

Although Bauer has been caught using foreign substances to increase his spin rate (check it out on Youtube; excellent stuff!) and he is quite the loudmouth.

Bauer has had 2 good years and 1 of them was 11 starts. To say Correa is overrated, but use Bauer as the opposite example is pretty hilarious. But it would make sense coming from “pinstripes17.”

        • all in the suit that you wear

No one will credibly elaborate on Mookie. The investigation into the 2018 Red Sox failed to document a single instance of cheating. No video. No accounts of a particular at bat or game. After months of searching. People should really read the commissioner’s report. The report admits they “largely do not have direct evidence” and they made “inferences” to give them a light penalty.

Mets22: Your team’s roster is really good, no doubt. But, better than ATL & LAD? Wow, I’m not so so sure that’s a claim one can make even on paper. In fact, I’m of the opinion that until some team is *clearly* above and beyond the LAD, we must assume, both on paper and practically, LAD is the best team in MLB.

Last year was not an aberration. They’ve been a playoff team for several seasons. They’re like the Yankees, except they continued to improve and had pitching. And, they just added again. Mets are good, top 5 possibly, but LAD takes the cake brother.

Houston has had a top 5 payroll for the last 4 to 5 years and Crane has said they always will be…. the comment about being poached by a big budget team is non- sense. I believe they are only about 11 million under the luxury tax at present.
Next year JV comes off the books so there will be more than enough to sign CC long term if they choose.

Astros also settled a case last year avoiding a hearing after exchanging figures when George Springer signed for $1m above the midpoint. Thus, Houston turned aside the file-and-go or file-and-trial system that all teams are supposedly following. Plus, Springer left via free agency last month.
