Let’s round up some minor moves from around the game…
Latest Transactions
- The Cubs have outrighted infielder Sergio Alcantara to Triple-A, MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian reports (Twitter link). Alcantara was designated for assignment earlier this week, and has been invited to the Cubs’ Major League spring camp. Alcantara only joined the Cubs earlier this month via a waiver claim from the Tigers, as the 24-year-old looks to compete for a roster spot after making his big league debut (10 games, 23 plate appearances) in 2020. Over 2611 career minor league PA, Alcantara has hit .256/.340/.318.
- The Rangers announced that right-hander Jimmy Herget has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple-A, though Herget will still be invited to the big league Spring Training camp. Herget was designated for assignment earlier this week. Selected off waivers from the Reds last winter, Herget posted a 3.20 ERA and 17 strikeouts over 19 2/3 innings for Texas last season, but control was a major issue, as he also walked 14 batters.
Earlier Today
- The Indians announced the signing of Ryan Lavarnway to a minor league deal. The 33-year-old catcher has received an invite to spring training. The former Red Sox farmhand appeared in five games with the Marlins in 2020, collecting four singles in 11 plate appearances. He has generally served as catching depth with occasional stints at the big league level, though he hasn’t seen more than a few games worth of action since 2015. Since debuting with Boston in 2011, Lavarnway has gone on to log Major League playing time with the Orioles, Braves, A’s, Pirates, Reds, and Marlins. For his career, he owns a triple slash line of .215/.272/.344 in 456 plate appearances over nine seasons, with a 6.8 percent walk rate and 24.1 percent strikeout rate.

The Cubs should now trade Sergio Alcantara for Arismendy Alcantara. Then trade Alcantara for Chris Coghlan . Find wherever Chris Volstad is and trade him back for Carlos Zambrano. Although Zambrano ate too many hots dogs playing for the Chicago Hot Dogs (yes, he actually played for a team called that) he can still be as an effective of a pitcher as Bartolo Colon at this point. So anyways my proposal for the Cubs starting rotation in 2021 is : Hendricks, Arrieta, (trade for Jon Lester) , Zambrano, Ryan Dempster (sign as Free Agent), and Carlos Marmol (Sign as Free Agent). We can have Davies move over to 2nd base since the Cubs need a 2np baseman more. If Ian Happ bats like Ian Crapp then Adbert Alzolay is an insurance policy in center field. Although I heard star outfielder Tim Tebow recently became available.

I’m from the Chicago area and it’s just the Chicago Dogs, not “Hot” in there whatsoever
LetGoOfMyLeg
Just curious, why were comments closed on the two prior posts.

I was wondering the same thing?
PapiElf
Probably because they’re Covid related.

Well, I will answer my own post. I suspect we were all given a timeout because of inappropriate posting. I have no problem with that…

This doesn’t seem like a big deal. Gotta assume it’s mostly adult men here. You should move along if you can’t roll with a bit of discourse that you may not agree with.
Yeah it’s a baseball site, but it’s also a general audience setting as a social outlet. Especially with so much of our interaction now online.
Shutting off comments is weak. Journalism is in the toilet today. The writers here are journalists at some level. Put on your nig boy panties and accept that grown men may mix several topics into their conversations. Don’t worry yourselves and get all PC if someone is opinionated or God forbid might use some salty language.
Sitting on a bar stool having a couple beers and BSing sports etc. is a most common of activities. This is very much like a virtual representation of that. It’s pretty egalitarian too and everyone can participate.
Tell ya what we’d say about shutting off comments. Us just average guys, from blue collar and white collar backgrounds, would all toast after telling you don’t be a pv55y, let people say what they want
cwsOverhaul
Why combine Happ covid w/deGrom that would elicit discussion?

Also curious, is there a way to stop the MLBTR iOS app from stealing / pasting info from my clipboard without my permission every single time I access the app on iPhone?

Get an Android? Sorry, just trolling.

There is a “Feature requests or help“ item under Settings. I believe I am 1 for 2 in terms of getting a response when I have tried it.

It’s also worked for me, when I was trouble changing my avatar from Chief Wahoo to my current one. MLBTR actually did the change for me, per my request.

Nope. Got tired of non-stop attacks from the cancel culture club. Every time I posted a comment they came out the woodwork with their hatred. I still rock my Wahoo gear almost daily.
Plus, I’m using the crooked C as a way of protesting Cleveland’s ownership using that hideous block C. That thing is ugly.

Dude woke culture is very tolerant. It’s really very surprising that you were confronted aggressively. You should reexamine your actions. I’ll bet you find yourself doing something different than they do. So just change your thoughts and actions to ones they agree with and you’ll be fine.
TmanTheGoat
So can we start the degrom discussion here?
Oxford Karma
The fact that he has played the last 4 years and played 5 or 6 games in each one is wild.
phenomenalajs
He was also on the surprising Team Israel is the 2017 World Baseball Classic that made it out of group play into the medal round. Their “star” pitcher was Jason Marquis.

Always find it interesting how some guys can just linger for years and always find a way onto a team
sufferforsnakes
Catchers and LH pitchers especially.

As to the comments closed post, am on this site 5-6 times a day and post maybe every 3 weeks or so…..Since a bit after Halloween, there is a big uptick in negative/somewhat abusive posts…..I used to love the comments section, but it’s going down the Yahoo rabbit hole of late…
Still will read them, but recently look at original commenter posts and bypass a lot of the replies….
Rangers29
Yep. It’s annoying, but there is still a good handful of smart posters here.
PapiElf
I’ve notice that too. There seems to be less and less comments regarding the story and more about arguing/insulting each other. It hasn’t only been MLBTR, the pro-football-rumors site’s comments have been pretty disgraceful with mostly people arguing about politics or news. A couple months ago, MLBTR just turned off comments on all posts and that seemed to work for the next few weeks after they turned them back on.

just a function of a Senate that has more Rep* than Dem and only ~ 11 seat diff in the House and SJ jamming agenda down peoples throats like he has a mission / mandate and not the slimmest of margins where The People want Governance Not Politics.
* u figure out why that is a correct statement
Mlb1971
Citi – it may be a function of pandemic keeping people at home for a YEAR…..NO EATING OUT, NO SPORTS EVENTS, NOTHING OPEN, but Dem vs Rep does not have anything to do with the majority of people posting
Mlb1971
Papielf – agreed, It has been that way for awhile now. I switch to a different site and rarely come back to mlbtraderumors. They do a poor job of moderating the site.
DarkSide830
lots of nutsos on this site lately

I’m just gonna talk Degrom here since TC closed the last article.
I’d looove to see him stay with the Mets for the entirety of his career. The recent likes of Wainwright, Yadi, and Kershaw are clear outliers though I hope they don’t go away any time soon. Andrus looked to be one of the next who could do it, but that’s gone now.
It’s amazing how many players actually spend their entire MLB career with one team yet they get no recognition. Those “insignificant” relievers that fall on and off the roster can stay a with 1 team for their entire career, they just had a short career…
elmedius
Thought both Andrus and Wainwright had debuted with the Braves before they were traded… but nope. Pedroia just did it, looking like Zimmerman and Gardner will too. I assume Posey will?
DrDan75
@rangers
Can you say Salvador Perez? He has been a Royal through some brutal rebuilding years in KC, and will probably still be there when they get good enough to contend again.
Citifield4eva
be great if Jake spent his whole career with NYM. He’s going to need some help to make it from Hall of Very Good into HOF. He has awards and good ratios, but may not accrue the counting stats unless he pitches into late 30’s and he’s already 32. Could end up like Mattingly with any type of injury that can come with age
WeeWoo
Ryan Braun and Alex Gordon are going on this list, just to name two. And it’s early yet, but Mike Trout and Freddie Freeman look to be another two.
whyhayzee
Lavarnway is a pretty smart fellow. Imagine he could wind up staying in baseball. Might as well play as long as a team gives you a chance.
its_happening
Vet catcher there to guide the young players before they reach the big leagues. Smart.
dgk71
He might be our best hitting catcher. Lol.
bobtillman
Larvanway was supposed to be in the same HOF class as Blake Swihart.
elmedius
Neither of them compares to Lars Anderson. Legend!
DockEllisDee
Good to see he’s still plugging away. This guy absolutely crushed every hittable pitch he saw in his cup of coffee with the Reds. I guess GABP can do that for a guy. I remember. Pepperidge Farm remembers.
Rsox
Hard to believe Lavarnway was once a top 10 prospect in the Red Sox system. But good for guys like him and Tim Federowicz for sticking around as long as they have. Both will probably be future Managers one day
tom brunanskys black sock
Does Lavarnway still rock the detective stash?
Mich Man
I remember Lavarnway as a Red Sox prospect way back when. He seemed like a DH type with below average power. Not a good combo. Surprised he’s still getting chances, but maybe he improved his game.
