Minor MLB Transactions: 2/26/21

By Connor Byrne | February 26, 2021 at 3:13pm CDT

The latest minor transactions from around baseball…

  • The White Sox have signed outfielder Mikie Mahtook to a minor league contract, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times tweets. Mahtook did not receive an invitation to major league spring training. The 31-year-old was most recently with the Phillies organization, but he did not appear in the majors last season. Mahtook saw big league action in each season from 2015-19, which he divided between the Rays and Tigers, and batted .235/.292/.405 with 33 home runs and 14 stolen bases in 965 plate appearances.
  • Giants right-hander Trevor Gott cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento on Friday, per Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic. He’ll remain in the organization as depth after it designated him for assignment last week. The hard-throwing Gott, 28, had a difficult 11 2/3-inning season in 2020, when he issued an equal number of strikeouts and walks (eight) and gave up 13 earned runs on 13 hits. The home run ball was one of the main culprits for Gott’s struggles, as he surrendered seven during that short period.

He always seemed to blow leads especially when I’d watch the Dodgers crush him lol and I’d always say “Trevor Gott got!!” Hahaha

Congrats of a sort to Trevor Gott, because giving up 7 homers in 11.2 innings isn’t easy to do.

Bet I could do it in half the innings…. or one inning probably.

I was surprised the Giants tendered him. Every team passed on the chance to claim him. Given that he doesn’t makes that much over the minimum, it says a lot about Gott as a reliever. Can’t say I disagree with the general assessment.

Would have preferred to just see him released, and not outrighted. Normally I like the moves Zaidi makes. Hopefully I’m wrong about this one, and Zaidi did the right thing.

He had his moments before the wheels came off last season. If they can keep him at minimal cost, it’s all good.

Mahtook is an interesting depth signing for the White Sox even if he didn’t get an invite to training camp

@rsox——-imagine where this thread would be an hour and ten minutes after posting the story if the Cubs had signed Mahtook. The response (or actually, lack of) to this signing is further proof that White Sox fans actually do care more about the Cubs than the Sox.

Nothing is forever. The next few years are an opportunity for the sox to gain in relative importance in the city.

When I was a kid, the sox were much bigger than the cubs. (I was 12 when sox won in 1959),

Every year from 1951-1968, the sox outdrew the cubs

          Oh stop…

The Sox have drawn 2 million fans thirteen times in their existence.

The Cubs have topped 2 million ever year but three times since 1984.

2005 was an opportunity for the Sox to gain importance in the the city, as well, and the Cubs STILL outdrew them by 600,000 fans.

You think you would just accept it by now…

The Cubs going nationwide on WGN cable while Reinsdorf opted for Sportsvision, changed everything.

Then throw in Harry Carey, Wrigley Field vs GR field, and the Cubs became a national tourist attraction.

Accept what? That the Cubs are the team tourists/transplants/Iowans like while the Sox actually have fans in Chicago?

Lol. I don’t even understand what point you’re trying to make. But regardless of whatever weird hangups you have, why would Sox fans get excited over Mikie Mahtook?

31st overall back in 2011. Nine picks ahead of Jackie Bradley Jr, fourteen ahead of Trevor Story and twenty-one picks ahead of Blake Snell. Tampa Bay had a whopping 10 of the 60 picks in the 1st round that year and he was the second player that they picked while Snell was their seventh..

I like him as a depth piece in the minor league’s. Maybe he can turn it around and post something closer to his 2019 numbers. Good injury insurance.

33 HRs playing part time over less than 1000 ABs is actually pretty decent power.

It doesn’t have anything to do with his -75 OPS+ in ’19, does it? I didn’t realize a player could have a negative OPS+ until a couple of minutes ago. I wonder if -75 OPS+ is a record.

On a better note for you, it will be interesting to see if Miggy gets 3,000 hits and 500 HR this season. I’ll be rooting for him to do it. I’ve always liked him (except for when he did his damage against the Sox).

You should care at least a little bit about the Sox. After all, they are a division rival, and an improved one at that.
