The Red Sox announced this afternoon that they’ve claimed righty John Schreiber off waivers from the Tigers and placed left-hander Chris Sale on the 60-day injured list to open a 40-man roster spot. The Sale move shouldn’t come as a shock, given that he underwent Tommy John surgery on March 30 last year. It was reported last month that his rehab was expected to come near the back end of the typical 12-15 month recovery time. He’ll likely be an option for the Sox sometime early this summer.
Schreiber, 27 next month, has pitched 28 2/3 innings with Detroit over the past two seasons but has not fared well, logging a 6.28 ERA in that time. Other metrics are more bullish on the former 15th-round pick, however, thanks largely to an above-average 25.6 percent strikeout rate and a very manageable 6.2 percent walk rate. The sidearm-slinging Schreiber has a career 1.99 ERA in four minor league seasons, including a 2.28 mark in 59 1/3 innings at Triple-A.
Schreiber doesn’t throw particularly hard, as is common with sidearmers, but he’s been a thorn in the side of hitters throughout his minor league tenure — righties in particular. Right-handed opponents posted a laughable .192/.270/.311 slash against him in 2019. Beyond that, Schreiber has multiple minor league option years remaining, giving the Red Sox both depth and flexibility with their bullpen should they choose to keep him on the 40-man roster.
AL34
28 2/3 innings with Detroit over the past two seasons but has not fared well, logging a 6.28 ERA in that time. This guy should make a world of difference this year. How about picking up a Rich Hill for a couple of million. Bloom continues to win the off season!!!
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
He had an okay FIP. If you sign Rich Hill, he will get injured the minute he gets on the field. I haven’t agreed with everything Bloom has done, but this is not a bad pick-up.
Mlb1971
John Schreiber’s minor league stats are more than impressive. Many if not most pitchers do not fare well in their first 28 2/3 innings in the mlb. It cost very little to give him a look as a waiver claim.
IN – 204
ERA – 1.99
BB – 60
SO – 235
WHIP – 0.97
Very few minor leaguers have better stats than his! If used in correctly against predominantly right handed hitters he could be successful in the mlb….
KD17
John Schreiber’s minor league stats being summarized means very little.
Here are the year by year totals which show he has decent potential but has yet to do well in highly competitive situations. You left off the disaster he experienced in the Arizona Fall League where in 9 relief performances against excellent minor league players he had an ERA of 7.00 (fairly consistent with his MLB experience), a WHIP of 1.56, with 3 walks and 9 strike outs.
His issue when facing quality hitters is that he gives up more than a hit an inning which destroys his WHIP and ERA.
He was 22 at Low A and did very well, 23 at A and did quite well, 24 at AA where he did well but not as good as the first two years. Then he went to the Arizona Fall League and struggled. At age 25 in 2019 he had 5 appearances back at AA and did well, got moved to AAA for 48 games and was surprisingly good at not giving up hits per inning. He gave up 39 hits in 59.1 IP but uncharacteristically walked 21 for a 1.01 WHIP. That was good enough to get him a promotion to the Tigers where he pitched in 13 games, going 13 innings with 16 hits and 4 walks. He won 2 of the appearances but carried a miserable 6.23 ERA and 1.54 WHIP. In 2020, he became a full time reliever with the Tigers and threw 15.2 IP and gave up 19 hits and 4 walks and 14 strike outs.
So, if he stays close to his Detroit numbers with Boston he’s perfect for their relief group. He gives up more than a hit an innings pitched, he has his walks under control but he’s not a guy who misses bats and with the bad defense of the Red Sox (especially Devers) makes it likely he should have similar success to so many other Red Sox relievers. Honestly, it feels like we are buying redundancy but to give Bloom credit, it’s sustainable redundancy!!! hahaha
This guy could work out just fine if he gets sent to AAA and proves he can give up significantly less hits than innings pitched. Then, return him to the Red Sox and see if he can do it in non pressure middle inning relief stints. If he can’t, he’s gone. If he can, who knows, his low minors suggests he has upside of being a competitive reliever. He simply has to realize it, which most don’t.
Flanny
I think there’s certainly room to improve, but being the type of pitcher he is and the analytically minded front office the Red Sox are I seriously think he could become an asset. Pitchers(side-arm, underwhelming stuff) like these often need management that can better groom them, I’m not saying he’ll be great, but I defnitely think he can be much better than a 6 plus ERA
looiebelongsinthehall
They claimed him. Big f’n deal. When they need the spot for someone else, he’ll be DFAed. Who are we kidding?
Flanny
fair point, when Sale gets back or if they make another move this guy’s probably gone
Fisk27
Roster churn — it’s how teams improve. Bloom has a proven track record of this in Tampa..
KD17
Fisk27 – I beg to differ. Bloom was part of a TEAM of front office people who had a track record. Red Sox fans need to realize, the brains of the group stayed in TB that’s why they keep beating Bloom in off season and in season moves. He was a non critical part of the decision making. Nobody should assume based on performance in Boston that Bloom was a significant factor in the decision-making in TB. They keep doing better minor league moves and the Red Sox keep churning butter,
NOTE: NO SIGNIFICANT ADDS in 1 and 1/2 years.
That’s a dismal track record. He was not a critical part of the decision-making in TB otherwise there would have been a drop-off and an improvement in Boston. Neither has happened.

Rich Hill in Tampa
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
That might actually be good for Tampa… low stress, won’t have to go the distance. Theres too much pressure in Boston for Rich Hill and he would be used more as a starter than an opener.
Flanny
True but he also had some success with Boston a few years back before his time with the Dodgers and Twins
JoeBrady
Yeah, the stress in Boston must’ve been killing him. That why his ERA was 1.34 with Boston.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
And how many innings was that?
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Short time. He would never last the whole season. Small sample size. His whole career is a conjunction of small sample sizes. I think the most he has pitched is 130 innings a season.
I didn’t mean pressure in terms of ability, more in terms of injury.
Finlander
These days the only pressure in Boston is duking it out with Baltimore to avoid the division basement.
Stevil
Steve’s been more active today than the A’s–and that’s saying something.
fasswizzle
You just hate to see this LMAO
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
He might actually be a nice addition. His FIP is far lower than his ERA, which indicates he might not be as bad as the ERA suggests. I do find his WHIP alarming though. It’s worth a try.
ottoc 2
FanGraphs says, “FIP does a better job of predicting the future than measuring the present, as there can be a lot of fluctuation in small samples.”
Also according to FanGraphs, the formula for FIP also includes an FIP constant, which is based on the league average of the components that make up FIP (HR, BB, HBP, K, IP).
So, my question is how do you predict the futire if you don’t know what the league averages will be? Also, FIP is not league or park adjusted, which needs to be taken into consideration (using FIP-) when a pitcher joins another team.
LordD99
I wouldn’t put much faith in FIP vs ERA based on a total of 28 innings pitched over two seasons. Sample size noise c
LordD99
…meaning there’s a point where the difference will stabilize, but 28 total innings spread over a couple seasons is not it.
For Love of the Game
Really sorry the Tigers DFA’d Shreiber. He’s a local guy and had a lot of success in the minors. I remember seeing his parents on TV for his MLB debut. There is a good chance he could develop some consistency. I’m rooting for him even if it comes back to bite my Tigers in the ass.
stymeedone
Alcantara, Stokes, Demerette and now Schreiber. The Tigers must be improving if the bottom of the 40 that gets cast off is so attractive to other teams.
dmazcomp
And Anthony Castro. They also lost Will Vest in the Rule 5 draft.
Bigmabe333
Will the Sox sign someone else n next week?
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
I think the roster might be set. Except for Fringe guys like this invited to spring training. Perhaps a few weeks into spring training an opportunity will come up via trade, but I think we’re all set here.
User 2802304835
Does Bloom know they’re only supposed to have 40 guys on the 40-man? They’ll need to make a spot for Plawecki when he comes back from the Covid list and they still haven’t put Marwin Gonzalez on the 40-man either
Jack Marshall
There are plenty of candidates to ditch. My favorite: Colten Brewer. Austin Brice.
v7w5
No, please Ryan Brasier. Tired of watching him wet his pants on the mound.
mils100
Can we please stop looking at FIP for part-time relief pitchers as if they mean anything. It’s as if FIP on here is sacred like we used to think of ERA. It’s not a great stat and means nothing for a guy throwing 20-30 innings.
Schreibers a warm body. All teams will need a bunch of guys and maybe he does well – who knows?
warnbeeb
When the Red Sox pick up a Tiger DFA pitcher it tells you all you need to know. If he struggled in Comerica Park just wait til he tosses in Fenway.

All Porcello did was win a Cy Young. Honestly, can we wait and see how this turns out?

KD17
My observation is that there are 6 main types of contributors on the sight.
1 – Angry fans who are upset with ownership, Bloom and Cora.
2 – Fans that are critical of players
3 – Fans that are all positive and don’t like people bursting their bubble.
4 – Trolls. Guys who take shots at others for many different types of reasons; they may root for another team and are trying to aggravate Red Sox fans, they have taken shots at people in the past and those people have made them look like the fools that they are and lastly they like annoying other people so they insult people who make comments for fun.
5 = Counter punchers are those that hate when a comment isn’t responded to with a baseball discussion but rather an insult so they counter punch with an insult and that leads to friends of the troll or the troll chiming in and extending the insults.
6 – Really smart baseball fans that make excellent comments which whether you agree or not are presented well for discussion.
For me, I fit category 1 because I am livid with the front office and ownership for disposing of Mookie, Price and now most of the 2018 World Championship team that was in it’s prime. I’m sure that’s very apparent to everyone who reads this daily. I am also part of category 5 because cyber bullies and trolls have no place on this website so if I am attacked I will fight back. I expect baseball arguments not insults.
I get on this website daily because of all the great #6 people of the site. I enjoy reading what they have to say. Thanks to all those people for providing the intended content for this website.
30 Parks
The Red Sox should put Chaim Bloom on the 60-day DL.
Mlb1971
30 parks – perfect example … (sarcasm or not, still obtuse)
KD17
Yaz1971 – perfect example. 30 Parks has a right to his informed opinion.
Not obtuse, He’s SPOT ON. Many fans don’t see Bloom like you do. We forgive you for your mistakes, why not show the same courtesy to others if you don’t agree?
Mlb1971
Kiddy17 – you are the most obtuse of them all.
Mr. 60 year fan who thinks his opinion is all that matters and telling everyone they are wrong! You have no room to talk at all… as if you are Mr. KNOW IT ALL….
little kiddy17….Lol
KD17
XXX1971 – I make comments and you respond with insults. You make comments and I present facts. Facts don’t make me smart, they are simply facts and I think readers should see them and form their own opinions.
You can use whatever childish comments you want about me. I am still going to follow any of your misguided comments with facts. At this point I need to inform you that the word obtuse is being used incorrectly. I’m shocked.!!
Obtuse – annoyingly insensitive or slow to understand. See you wouldn’t call me a know it all if I was slow to understand.
I’m looking forward to your next adjective in responses to me!! hahaha
JoeBrady
It’s amazing how many posters lose their schiit every time the RS sign minor depth.
If it bothers you that much, just don’t bother watching minor league games.
KD17
JB – Maybe it’s because nothing is being done to help the major league roster? To call the moves Bloom has made minor league depth is assuming they will actually contribute at the major league level, otherwise, if we don’t trade them to help the major league roster then what good are they? Each asset must provide value to the Boston Red Sox not their minor league teams for them to have value.
Bloom is dealing in the futures market of baseball and so far it hasn’t provided much help to the major league team. If the hope is that it will pay off in 2025 and beyond that’s great but most fans don’t want to see a fourth pick in the draft yearly until Bloom’s ‘futures’ gambles pay off. They want impactful moves now. And if your answer is that’s not possible, then maybe they should have left things alone and kept the competitive team they had.
FYI…. you and Yaz1971 belittling opinions constantly seems to fly in the face of what you guys are preaching.
As far as I can tell, nobody has lost their schiit, that’s an exaggeration. People may not like the focus on the distant future that seems to be acceptable to you and a few others. Everyone has a right to their opinions without someone insulting them to feel better about themselves.
Here is a suggestion. Just write comments about baseball not others. That way others don’t have to respond to your insults.
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
My thinking is perhaps filling the minors with guys who have potential pushes the less potential candidates downward and perhaps helps the Red Sox let go of AAA and AA guys in a trade?
Previously a trade like that killed the farm. Now a trade of quality minor Leaguers this summer or fall won’t hurt as much? Thoughts?
KD17
Gary – I just finished something along the lines of what you just wrote. I say trade Downs and Wong now while their rankings haven’t fallen that far. Get something for the Mookie deal besides Verdugo. Get things the Red Sox need like SPs or just live young arms.
I agree with you on this one. For each add to the AA and AAA levels we either have to demote someone then cut or cut at those levels. Late bloomers could end up better than the new acquisitions so take all the over-rated prospects and move them like DD did with Anderson Espinoza and Yoan Moncada.
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
Yes, good stuff. The only thing is a guy here and a guy there sure makes the process very slow. Hopefully three four five guys from each draft year can be counted on as eventual Major Leaguers.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Al is great. He is the best in baseball. But I don’t understand how he loses players to waivers, especially when everyone knows you can only have 40 players on the 40 man roster. It’s not rockets science. It’s not a professional secret.
I guess he forgot he was going to sign someone, forgot how many fingers and toes he had already used up, then forgot to trade someone.
Things happen. I understand.
Go Tigers! Go Al! You’re the bestest!
PutPeteinthehall
Surprised Sale lasted as long as he did considering his delivery. So far his current contract has really paid off for the BoSox. Pale hose got the best of that trade.
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
Red Sox won a World Series out of it and after the Jon Lester Fiasco the Sox had no choice but to keep sale and extend him. Was it a mistake? I don’t know if I would consider it a mistake but as I said I don’t think the Red Sox had a choice.
Besides, in baseball plenty of teams have that big money guy on the books who doesn’t deliver as expected. It’s a part of the game that sucks but happens.
KD17
RJ – Here are the facts:
Sale acquired in December 2016 for Moncada, Michael Kopech, Luis Alexander Basabe and Victor Diaz.
Sale
2017 – 32 starts 17 wins 2.90 ERA 0.97 WHIP 2.45 FIP 2nd CY, All-Star SP
2018 – 27 starts 12 wins 2.11 ERA 0.86 WHIP 1.98 FIP 4th CY, All-Star SP
2019 – 25 starts 6 wins 4.40 ERA 1.09 WHIP 3.39 FIP
2020 – 0 starts COVID shortened season
TOTAL 84 starts 35 wins 3.08 ERA 0.97 WHIP 2.57 FIP 2 top CY finishes and 2 AS starts. Many would say that is an impressive set of numbers.
Here is what Chicago got
2017
Moncada – 54 games 199 ABs, 46 H, 8 HR, 22 RBI, 3 Sbs, OPS+ 103
Kopech – DID NOT PLAY
Basabe – DID NOT PLAY
Diaz – DID NOT PLAY
2018
Moncada – 149 games, 578 ABs, 136 H, 17 HR, 61 RBI, 12 Sbs, OPS+ 96
Kopech,- 4 starts, 1 win, 5.02 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, 6.16 FIP
Basabe and Diaz – DID NOT PLAY
2019
Moncada – 132 games, 511 ABs, 161 H, 25 HR, 79 RBI, 10 Sbs, OPS+ 140
Kopech, Basabe and Diaz – DID NOT PLAY
2020
Moncada – 52 games, 200 ABs, 45 H, 6 HR, 24 RBI, 0 Sbs, OPS+ 94
Kopech, and Diaz – DID NOT PLAY
Basabe sold to SF in August of 2020 for pocket change. His only contribution!!
Also, Victor Diaz has no stats after 2017 for majors or minors. So two of the four prospects that created depth for the White Sox FACTUALLY don’t create depth they simply switched teams.
In four years since the Sale deal Boston got the benefit of a player that achieved
84 starts 35 wins 3.08 ERA 0.97 WHIP 2.57 FIP 2 top CY finishes and 2 AS starts
The Chicago White Sox got
387 games, 1488 ABs, 388 H, 56 HR, 186 RBi, 25 Sbs, OPS+ 112 AND
4 starts, 1 win, 5.02 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, 6.16 FIP
Looking at the numbers it’s very hard to say the Pale hose got the best end of the deal. Also, so MANY, MANY fans forget that Sale was paid $12M in 2017 and $12.5M in 2018. Those were absolutely HUGE discounts on his performance. Giving him a big contract evened out his money. Sale got 5 years $145M and the Red Sox paid $24.5M for his first to years so the 7 years cost the Red Sox $169.5M.
If you do the math, 7 years of an elite pitcher in his prime for $24.2M AAV is not a high price, in fact it’s a very low price considering today’s market for pitchers.
The Pale hose NEED Kopech to develop or this deal goes down as a disaster for them. Moncada also needs to perform above league average at $14M a year.

Trading Sale would be insane, consequently, it’s a good possibility with the current thinking of ownership. They gave up the 2nd best player in the game and Sale when healthy is a top 5 SP. But the Red Sox now have nearly a billion average minor leaguers with upside potential that is not likely to be realized and a woeful MLB starting line-up and injury depleted pitching staff. Fans should be very grateful for all that they have? Especially considering all that they had in 2018? I think not!!.
The Red Sox need to wake up and start trading over-rated minor league players rather than trying to stock pile a bunch of average Joe minor league players in hopes of a miracle happening and one becoming the next Mookie Betts. Its far more like to see a Mookie Betts=like surprise from the minor league players that existed in the farm system prior to Bloom. Houck is a perfect example. Duran will probably be the next one up.
Somebody went and fixed something that wasn’t broke and now .500 is an uphill climb.
