Athletics Return Rule 5 Pick Dany Jimenez To Blue Jays

By Connor Byrne | March 15, 2021 at 3:43pm CDT

The Athletics announced that they have returned Rule 5 Draft pick Dany Jimenez to the Blue Jays. The A’s also reinstated fellow right-hander Frankie Montas from the COVID-19 injured list.

Jimenez, who turned 27 in December, was a Rule 5 pick in back-to-back offseasons (the Giants took him in 2019), but he has seen little major league action thus far. He pitched 1 1/3 innings with the Giants across two appearances last year. The Double-A level is the highest Jimenez has climbed in the minors, and he logged an excellent 1.87 ERA while averaging more than 12 strikeouts per nine in 33 2/3 innings there in 2019.

Now that he’s back with the Jays, Jimenez will report to major league camp as a non-roster invitee, Scott Mitchell of TSN tweets.

@DarkSide830- he will be picked by a team next year again in the Rule 5, then be returned to the Jays for a record 3rd time. lol

You are correct as it counts as 2 outrights. It’s possible he does and signs a ML contract but then gets optioned

Excellent strike out numbers. Throws high 90’s But a little wild and just not ready for the majors.

At 27 a bit of a late bloomer then. Power guys can take a while to develop or never…..I haven’t seen him pitch.

In 2019 he was excellent in AA. To the point where he deserved a late promotion to AAA. Losing the 2020 season hurts guys like him.

A’s facing a number of roster crunches in the bullpen, the biggest question is the lefty, Nik Turley, who cannot find the plate right now, and yes small sample, but fellow lefty Cole Irwin is pitching really well. Turley might be cut loose in favour of Irwin.

Currently the bullpen includes Turley, Smith and Kolarek, but the last 2 have options remaining.

Kaprelian, Holmes, Irwin and Jefferies are pitching a lot better and have higher ceilings though.

    Puk also has options.

It appears these are the group of 8 pitchers (Turley, Smith, Kolarek, Puk, Kaprelian, Holmes, Irwin and Jefferies) who will fight out those last 4 spots. Turley is the most vulnerable one, all the others can stay in the org if they don’t make it.

You know who won’t be returning their Rule 5 pick?

    The Tigers.

Akil Baddoo, who never saw action above high-A has been having a tremendous spring for the Tigers.
