Robinson Chirinos To Undergo Surgery

By Mark Polishuk | March 15, 2021 at 3:22pm CDT

MARCH 15: Manager Aaron Boone told Marly Rivera of ESPN and other reporters that Chirinos will undergo surgery Tuesday. He’ll need four to six weeks to recover.

MARCH 11: Catcher Robinson Chirinos has been diagnosed with a fractured right wrist, the Yankees announced.  “Wrist and hand specialists will be consulted in the coming days to determine best next steps,” according to the team’s official statement.  Chirinos suffered the injury after being hit by a pitch during yesterday’s game with the Pirates.

Chirinos was in camp on a minor league deal, signed to provide some catching depth and perhaps give Kyle Higashioka some competition for the backup catching job.  Since Chirinos has been roughly a league-average hitter over his nine MLB seasons, this track record made him perhaps a touch overqualified for the “Spring Training depth catcher” role, which could have been indicative of how the Yankees were approaching the catching position given Gary Sanchez’s struggles in 2020.  However, Chirinos’ chances of making the Opening Day roster are now over, and he could possibly face a lengthy layoff depending on the severity of his fracture.

Bothered by an ankle injury for much of 2020, Chirinos struggled through an ugly season that saw him hit only .162/.232/.243 over 82 combined plate appearances with the Rangers and Mets.  It was a big step back for a catcher who had been a productive bat for much of his career, hitting .234/.329/.439 with 85 homers over 2043 PA with the Rays, Rangers, and Astros from 2011-19.

I hope Sanchez is still with the Yankees when his contract year comes up. He is paycheck player with some of the best talent at the catcher position. His bat is equal to Piazza’s in his prime. Unfortunately, he has no drive and doesn’t love the game like other players like Trout, Baez, Tatis and Gardner. It’s a shame. One of the most naturally gifted players in the game today and he could care less. He could be on a HOF trajectory but he would rather be a bum. I wish you could take his natural athletic ability and transfer it to someone like Austin Romine. Someone who would appreciate it. Someone who would put in the work to actually improve their game. Instead he just coasts by and doesn’t care. I bet he has a career year the season before free agency and some team will give him $100+ million. I hope it’s not the Yankees cause he will definitely become the next Vernon Wells after he signs his deal.

Literally a tough break for Robinson even if he was never going to make the team. I was still rooting for him. Not sure how many chances he has left. Hopefully he can catch on somewhere when he’s healthy again.

I’ve watched him in a few games this spring & was impressed. Strong throwing arm & blocking capabilities. Too bad, hope the break isn’t serious & he can come back. He showed command & confidence behind the plate.

@curly imo that’s the important stats of a c how good is he behind the plate and how he interacts with the pitching staff. c should not be a focal point of your off a c real value is the non numerical values i.e. calling a game holding runners blocking crap pitches ect. if sanchez is committed to being a good c then throw out your off numbers and work on the important things that make a c good. if not then the yankees need to move on from him and let him be a dh or 1 bagger on a rebuilding team.

This must be outside of my entertainment knowledge (which I admit is not too expansive). My bad dude.

Either way I stand by Robinson Chirinos traveling the world by boat, debating whether he has the authority to punish cannibals, and just generally traveling places like he belongs there.

Well, Caruso was like a hundred years ago, so it’s quite ok if you don’t know who he was. He made hit operatic recordings in the early 1900’s.

Sanchez’s work ethic is not to be questioned. He works at it, just not sure he can consistently produce. Very skeptical he can ever be even an average catcher defensively. I think he’s slow to adjust to the pitchers and will always be prone to short outbursts of brilliance followed by long periods of bad performance.

This is accurate. I am a Yankee fan and follow all things Yankees and everyone says he works hard, perhaps too hard. Much of the criticism against him is in trying to up his defense his hitting began to suffer.

He’s actually in great shape after playing winter ball. I’ve always been the first to point out Sanchez’s lack of athletic physique but from the pictures I saw, he looks like he’s in fantastic shape this year. Maybe he can actually block a pitch in the dirt now.

Chirinos was never a threat to Sanchez, or probably even to Higashoika. Due to covid unpredictability, all teams are required to have a 5 player taxi squad when they play on the road, in addition to their 26 man roster.. One player on the taxi squad must be a catcher. That was Chirinos. He was signed to be on the covid taxi squad. Question is, who will be the taxi squad catcher now?

Chirinos was more of a threat to higgy not to Gaby not sure why anyone would think otherwise Gary yes has been suppar past two years but he also has had revolving catching instructors & funny how people willing to run him out of town saying he has no work ethic yet even cashman himself has stated no one has worked harder or is the first to arrive than gary his issue has been the different philosophies by his different instructors he is a big guy not even close to say like john kruk as most as mentioned here as a joke stating he is out of shape he has arms that are more like tree trunks I expect Gary this year to hit 30 hrs hit .270 make the allstar team and cement himself as one of the best catchers.

JT Realmuto is off to bad a start already after signing his contract but just a few years ago no one would say he was the best catcher in the game.

Catchers in MLB is the most demanding of all positions and most difficult to sustain excellence and up until past two years Gary was one of the best catchers period and youngest to reach 100 hrs for all catchers but also second all time for all players

Higgy wasn’t go anywhere as he’s Cole’s personal catcher. I’m aware that Cole has changed his tune on this recenty. Barring injury, I’d be surprise if he catches Cole less than 40% of his starts this season. Cole starts will coincide with a Sanchez DH day or rest.

Wow, first Britton and now Chirinos. In the past, the yankees would dicker around, make empty statements about players’ status, and then eventually just admit the guy was done and let him go have surgery. Maybe now that the pacemaker is installed, they realize they need to actually do something to make a player get better. I know Boone doesn’t make these decisions but in the past he has been the mouthpiece of vacuous team statements. Maybe the yankees realized they didn’t have a patsy for their nonsense anymore and decided to actually take action on their injured players. What a concept.

Every time Boone spoke, he said nothing. Vacuous statements about injuries. The team is a mess.

On September 4, the Yankees said Loaisiga was suffering from “a medical condition that prevents him from playing and necessitates placement on the injured list,” with manager Aaron Boone later specifying that the right-hander’s absence was not due to COVID-19.
The Yankees’ season has again been punctuated by injuries for high-profile players, but manager Aaron Boone tells reporters that both Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton could get at-bats at the alternate training site this weekend and return “shortly after that” if all goes well (Twitter link, with video, via SNY). On a less-optimistic note, MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch tweets that Boone also acknowledged it will be “challenging” for lefty James Paxton to return this season.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone provided reporters (including ESPN’s Marly Rivera) with updates on injured sluggers Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge, saying that Judge will increase his baseball-activity work on Monday. Stanton, who Boone feels is “a little ahead of Judge” in terms of readiness, has already been taking part in baseball activities and is now running at 80 percent as he continues his recovery from a hamstring strain.
The Yankees announced Friday that third baseman Gio Urshela and right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga have been placed on the 10-day injured list. Urshela is dealing with a bone spur in his right elbow, while Loasigia has “a medical condition that prevents him from playing and necessitates placement on the injured list,” per the team’s release. Manager Aaron Boone tells reporters (Twitter link via The Athletic’s Lindsey Adler) that Loaisiga’s condition is not Covid-19 related.
The Yankees are placing Aaron Judge back on the injured list with a similar low-grade calf strain to the one that shelved him earlier this month, manager Aaron Boone tells reporters (Twitter link via James Wagner of the New York Times). Judge only just came off the injured list this week, but he exited his first game back with tightness in his problematic calf muscle.

Bone spurs and calf strains aside, nothing at all.
