Right-handed reliever Bryan Shaw has made the Indians’ season-opening roster, Zack Meisel of The Athletic was among those to tweet. The team will have to add Shaw to its 40-man roster, which is full, and make a corresponding move to clear space for him.
This will be the second major league stint in Cleveland for the 33-year-old Shaw, who pitched with the club from 2013-17 and produced outstanding results. Shaw was part of two playoff teams, including an American League pennant winner in 2016, and logged a 3.11 ERA/3.54 SIERA with a 22.5 percent strikeout rate and an 8.0 percent walk rate during his first run in Cleveland. He also ate up 358 2/3 innings during that span and never finished with fewer than 64 frames in a season.
Shaw’s success with the Indians convinced the Rockies to sign him to a three-year, $27MM guarantee before 2018, but his career has fallen off a cliff since then. After Shaw put up a bloated 5.61 ERA in 126 2/3 innings from 2018-19, the Rockies cut him loose. He then caught on with the Mariners, but he allowed a whopping 12 earned runs over six frames last year. Unsurprisingly, Shaw was only able to score a minor league contract during the offseason, though he has shown encouraging signs this spring, having allowed three earned runs and totaled 13 strikeouts against five walks over 9 2/3 innings.

Possibly the worst reliever I’ve seen wear the Mariners uniform, and there’s been a lot of bad ones. But he has a solid track record, and is going somewhere familiar so maybe he’ll regain his old form.
getoffmylawn
Bryan Shaw’s the “worst reliever (you’ve) ever seen wear the Mariners uniform?” He pitched SIX INNINGS TOTAL for the Mariners last season!!! Your comment is way over-the-top. Dial it down a notch!!!
24TheKid
I am deeply sorry I hurt your feelings Mr. Lawn.
Ezall98
Bobby Ayala need I say more!!!
24TheKid
Bobby definitely did it longer, but Shaw was much worse in his short stint and showed no sign of improvement.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Who knows. Six innings. But if they were six of the loooongest innings witnessed by the kid, he may be on to something.
Windowpane
Well, he’ll be pitching for a manager who knows how to use him. Players love playing for Francona.
birdsfan415
Indians fans worst nightmare haha
Windowpane
Indians’ fans worst nightmare is Miguel Cabrera.
Dumpster Divin Theo
An uneaten double cheeseburger’s worst nightmare is Miguel Cabrera.
depressedtribefan
ok first of all Max Kepler is the Indians worst nightmare. Miggy is an afterthought. also, hes been laying off the cheeseburgers. he’s slimmed a bit… well I haven’t seen him this year yet though
Dennis Boyd
I can’t believe they dropped Hand for nothing and are now forced to bring on Shaw with that opening on their roster.
Polish Hammer
Didn’t have $10 mil or whatever it was to bring him back.
Ducky Buckin Fent
“Didn’t have” =\= “didn’t want to spend”
Ya know?
Dennis Boyd
They could have traded him and at least got a prospect. They made a mistake and now Indians fans will pay for it late in tight ballgames.
Windowpane
Shaw won’t be pitching in the late innings. BTW, he’s throwing 96-97 mph again. Maybe he just likes Cleveland.
sufferforsnakes
Saw where he spent time in the off-season at Driveline. Must have figured something out.
hockeyjohn
They tried to trade Hand and had no takers. No team picked up his option as well, The Indians will be fine in the late innings.
Prospectnvstr
You do realize that ALL of the other 29 teams could’ve put a claim on Brad Hand, right? Yet, none of them did. He did get his money in the end nonetheless. Can Shaw bring back the same #’s he had in Cleveland? Maybe. Can he be as bad as he was in Seattle (for those whole 6 ip)? Possibly but very doubtful. Will he be somewhere in between? Most likely. Will he be as good as Hand this season? It’s possible but probably not. Is the difference going to be worth the difference between the two contracts? I’m picking Hand will have the better year but Shaw will be good for Cleveland.
Dorothy_Mantooth
They only needed $9M to bring Hand back as they were on the hook for his $1M buyout. Very bad decision by Cleveland. Hand got the last laugh as he’s earning $11.5M now: $1M from Cleveland + $10.5M from the Nationals.
I hope Shaw is able to bounce back, but that short stint in Seattle didn’t paint a pretty picture. You could have chalked up his bad 2018 & 2019 to playing in Colorado, but the fact that he got racked in a pitcher’s park last year makes it look like his skills have diminished vs. just pitching in a bad ballpark like Coors Field for a couple of years. 6 innings in 2020 is certainly not enough to fully evaluate him, but the fact that Seattle cut him so early and no one else picked him up sure looks like most teams thought he was washed up. With that said, if any team can get him back on track, it’s the Indians. They work magic with their pitching staff every year. Wish him all the luck; I just hope Cleveland doesn’t have to put a young, promising player on waivers to clear a spot for Shaw.

Hand tops out at 90 mph now. Some Nats fielder is going to get hurt.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Talk to the Hand.
Indiansjoe
I wonder who looses their roster spot for him? Bauers, Harold Ramirez? Trade Ahmed?
miggy4prez
No one wants Ahmed, except Cleveland
clekid89
Who hurt you?
sufferforsnakes
Believe Harold is a non-roster invitee. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Bauers put on waivers.
MadThinker
Harold Ramirez is on the 40 man roster & he still ha an option (per roster resource).. I suspect Cam Hill is heading to the 60 day IL (which ooens a 40 man roster spot.
Question remains how more 40 man spots are opened for adding Ollie Perez & Ben Gamel…
sufferforsnakes
You’re correct. I’m flabbergasted that he is. He’s been horrible this spring. Probably the only reason he’s still around is because he bats right handed.
I’d rather Daniel Johnson had gotten the work in this spring, instead of him.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Harold Ramisez was great in Ghostbusters
DarkSide830
Once again we see why the Rox bullpen spending spree didn’t work – ya can’t pitch in Colorado.
AHH-Rox
Without looking it up, my memory is that Shaw was pretty bad on the road for the Rockies as well. Unlike Wade Davis whose failures were mainly at Coors.
RedKing22
When 3 ER and 13K/5BB through 9 2/3 Spring Training innings gets you onto the Opening Day roster…yikes
There was nobody better? lol
californiaangels
??? that’s an era under 3, and a k/9 well over 9… what more can a guy do lol
Windowpane
On 29 other Major League teams it does.
User 3044878754
Jake Taylor “ you want Shaw?”
Manager Lou Brown “ yeah I gotta feeling about Shaw”
Welcome to another season of Cleveland Indians baseball.
Dumpster Divin Theo
No way. Rather pitch to Parkman
Big97
I thought he was out of baseball already – good for him.
californiaangels
long beach state !!
Snapper
Shaw is terrible. The Indians ownership is the worst in all of pro sports.
Windowpane
You don’t follow baseball, do you? (Eye roll)
darkstar61
Exactly
Despite being in a hitters park in the AL, they have the 11th best Bullpen era in baseball since 2018. That while using just Hand and an otherwise rather endless supply of other guys
And the last time they won fewer than 91 games(/.560 win%) was 2015, the year before they went to the World Series. That despite their having removed every star/semi-star except Ramirez from that AL Champion team
Their team also still has the 2nd most wins in baseball since 2013, trailing only the Dodgers
Results speak for themselves
SodoMojo90
I screamed every time they bought this guy in last year for the Mariners. And Scott Servais continued to use him in leads (they didn’t last with Shaw in) even after he got rocked every outing. But Scott Servais can’t manage a bullpen to save his life so go figure. Have fun Cleveland. This guy is done.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Roller coaster scream? As in whee? Or Friday the 13th scream as in Jason?
Roxman
Cleveland must be be super desperate for relievers because Shaw basically is terrible. I can’t say the word I wanted to say
sufferforsnakes
Have you watched him this spring? His stuff looks really good. He’s a better option than a few others they’re looking at.
