Cardinals Place Yadier Molina On 10-Day IL

By Connor Byrne | April 27, 2021 at 3:37pm CDT

The Cardinals have placed catcher Yadier Molina on the 10-day injured list with a right foot tendon strain, Zachary Silver of MLB.com tweets. The team recalled catcher Ali Sanchez in a corresponding move.

Molina suffered the injury last Friday against the Reds, forcing him to leave early and miss the Cardinals’ games over the weekend. However, he did return to their lineup Monday in Philadelphia.

The Cardinals’ offense ranks a middle-of-the-pack 14th in runs scored and a less-than-stellar 23rd in wRC+, though Molina has certainly done his part. Re-signed to a one-year, $9MM contract in the offseason, the career-long Card has batted an excellent .323/.366/.631 with five home runs in 71 plate appearances. Behind the plate, the nine-time Gold Glove winner has thrown out an above-average 29 percent of would-be base thieves.

With Molina landing on the shelf, Andrew Knizner will handle the primary catching duties during a grueling stretch in which St. Louis will play 13 games in 13 days. Knizner has totaled 21 PA this year and hit a respectable .263/.333/.368.

    Love Yadi and Cardinals baseball.

That being said they let him come back to catch Waino last night and then put him on IL after leaving the team basically short a player over the weekend.

    Team first!!!

I’m sure he will be back after 10 days, Yadi’s a real baller. Unlike overpaid bum George Springer, who doesn’t care at all about his team as he collects his money sitting in a hot tub. Jays need to try and void the damn contract. Springer is done. One of the most selfish and lazy players I’ve ever seen.

Where does George springers laziness appear anywhere in this article about yadi and the cardinals? Lol

That’s quite the conclusion you’ve reached less than a month into the season.

What is really baffling is that it somehow got two upvotes. C’mon fellas. Tighten up.

Unless there is a thumbs down button it doesn’t tell the whole story. It’s like politics say something crazy enough someone will like it.

          Yeah, @Peterson.

          I get that.
I recently received half a dozen or so upvotes on a comment that two posters – rightfully so – absolutely shredded.

In the end, it was all a little embarrassing.

But: Springer is a MLB ballplayer. He definitely wants to play. To assume he doesn’t want to get back on the field & would rather, “collect his money while sitting in a hot tub” strikes me as nothing other than a personal projection.

I get your frustration but this really comes off as a childish tantrum. You’re reacting to the first person you see, George Springer, when there are several others also making the call on this. It’s to early in the season to risk making the injury worse and cost even more of the season.

The catchers of the generation! Realmuto and Grandal are good catchers in their primes but nothing comes close to the duality of prime Posey as a hitter and prime Molina as a defender.

          What are you talking about?

          Molina: = wRC+ 100, DRS = 168, fWAR = 55.4 in 2044 games
          Posey = wRC+: 122, DRS = 117, fWAR = 53.4 in in 1273 games
          Perez = wRC+: 100, DRS = 28, fWAR = 12.4 in 1000 games

Its a little harder to compare Yadi to Salvy due to twice as many games, but Salvy is a fraction of what Yadi is defensively while being on par offensively. Posey blows him out of the water in both categories. You are saying Perez is better than two HOFers? Don’t say dumb things we can easily refute.

Check Molina and Realmutos stats the last 5 years. For one thing Realmuto has twice as many errors and Yadi has also out hit him. No doubt about it Yadi is a first ballot hall of Famer wether you like him or not.

          Yadi (2016-2021): .279/.326/.438, 65 HRs, 102 wRC+
          Realmuto (2016-2021): .283/.339/.467, 87 HRs, 115 wRC+

Yadi’s my favorite player, but he has in no way, shape, or form outhit Realmuto over the past five years (same if you take 2015-2021, or 2015-2020, or even 2014-2019). Realmuto is and has been a better player—certainly offensively—in recent years (catching defense is very difficult to measure, and Yadi is a stellar defensive catcher while Realmuto is merely a good one by most standards; I won’t try to figure out whether a good catcher in his prime is better than a stellar one in his final seasons).

Wouldn’t be surprising to see Eli Marrero get a shot if Sanchez doesn’t perform.

The baseball gods weighting in. I don’t wish an injury on anyone but he deserved at least double Castellanos’ 2 game suspension for being the agitator and the only one that got physical in that aktercation.

Let it go man. What’s done is done. It was a messed up situation all around and could have been handled 50 different ways. And we as fans only know what part we get to see on TV.

Yep because Castellanos definitely wasn’t stupid for flexing over the pitcher. Yadi was just protecting his teammates and doesn’t take any of that crap. Enjoy the sweep!

He didn’t instigate. He just put a stop to it. The reds always think they are a big rival and the past 25 years they can’t come close to the Cardinals success. It’s laughable really.

Sigh, Cardinals fans. For being “the best fans in baseball”, they sure can’t stay on task to the topic at hand nor can they stay bipartisan and engage in meaningful baseball dialogue.

BadAcid: you don’t even dignify a reply. Insults are mature. Either grow up or get some meds man before you hurt yourself or someone else. Nice short-sided view on the “sweep” though. By that logic, the Reds are the best team in baseball because we just won 2 of 3 in LA!

The Med: The whole was over if Molina calmed down. Castellanos was walking away and wasn’t even going to get kicked out of the game, much less a suspension, until Molina took it to the next level. The point is if it was reversed and Arenando was in Castellanos shoes, you all would be outraged about the way it all shook out. Cards fans can’t be objective though, I get it.

Neither of you need to worry about replying, I won’t be checking the thread for your immature and biased “opinions”. Good luck the rest of the year…

It’s becoming more clear with each veteran going down in the NL Central that the Pirates are a team of destiny!

Beat the Royals quite handily tonight despite the 2-1 score line..

Why do the Cardinals swing at so many low pitches? Sometimes the ball will hit the plate and they still swing at it. Where is our hitting coach?
