Latest On Giants’ Rotation

By TC Zencka | April 14, 2021 at 9:14pm CDT

Alex Wood will be activated from the injured list to make his Giants’ debut, starting Sunday’s game against the Marlins, per Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports. Wood’s contract has a unique incentive structure that will pay out an additional $150K after 12 games of recording 10 or more outs. He receives more bonus cash after 14, 16, 18, 22, and 24 such games. Starting games certainly gives Wood the best chance to hit those markers, though health will be the biggest factor for the veteran southpaw.

Because of injures, Wood hasn’t been a regular rotation arm since back-to-back 150-inning seasons with the Dodgers in 2017 and 2018. Per Spotrac, Wood has seven career trips to the injured list, twice spending more than 100 days on the shelf. Arthroscopic debridement surgery on his left elbow limited him to 60 1/3 innings during the 2016 season. A back injury tanked his lone season with the Reds. He made just 7 starts covering 35 2/3 innings that year. Wood’s back has again given him problems this season.

With Wood joining the rotation, Logan Webb will head to the bullpen. Webb earned his rotation spot with a strong spring, but he’s off to a rough start. The 24-year-old has allowed 15 hits and five walks in just 10 1/3 innings in his two starts. While the move certainly may seem like a demotion, Pavlovic points out that Webb will be just the third right-hander in the Giants’ bullpen.

Of course, given today’s apparent injury to Johnny Cueto, the Giants may need to keep Webb in the rotation after all. Cueto left today’s game with a tight lat, per Kerry Crowley of the Bay Area News Group (via Twitter). Cueto has been excellent on this young season, tossing 8 2/3 innings of one-run ball in his season debut against the Rockies. He got his second win on the season today against the Reds. The veteran logged 5 2/3 scoreless innings before being removed because of the injury.

Cueto was looking so good, man. Shame to see him banged up. At least DeSclafani and Aaron Sanchez seem to have regained previous success, though. This rotation is sneaky good.

That is correct; this was his third start. Cueto went 5.2 and left with a no decision vs the M’s in his debut on Apr 2.,. He then went 8.2 ip vs the Rox in his 2nd start on Apr 7. Today was obviously vs the Reds… Hopefully the lat turns out to be minor and he was just being extra cautious. He’s been superb so far, and it’s big fun watching him pitch.

If the old guys at SFG can stay healthy and string together a season it could be a great way of keeping the contest between the Padres and Dodgers honest down the stretch. Cueto is one of the most fun pitchers to watch in my view. Hope he gets back on the mound quickly.

If the cueto injury turns out to be worse than it seems, tropeano who looked great in spring is on the taxi squad and behind him there is kazmir and Menez but even at that, wood is the 6th man in the rotation so depth is pretty good right now even if none of the starters are superstars

Giants have some 50 mil in payroll space. They can afford to use every cent too. If they become buyers – it’ll make deadline much more interesting. A Blackmon/story package would be a good fit

The Rockies and Giants had one of the most impactful trades in Giants history. The Giants gave them Charlie Culberson for Marco Scutaro just before the deadline in 2012.

Scutaro went on to have a 144 OPS+ season with the Giants and then won NLCS MVP.

        Ahh, fun times.

Gigantes FO have always been cheap. Now they look at the attendance so far at their ballpark and they look up at the Padres and Doyers and ask themselves, “Whats the point of bringing in more expensive free agents and trying to compete?”

They can operate currently at 20% capacity, or about 7500. They had 3600 a few nights ago. Bay area people are very cautious…

    Giants = Overachievers

Where has-been’s go to be stars….then fall off the planet when they leave SF….gotta hand it to the Giants though for getting everything out of their players….

Talent wise they are just inside the top 20 probably in between 15-20 yet they play like they are a top 10 team….

This is also how they won 3 WS in a 5 year span when they weren’t even the best team in their own division….and they were outmatched on paper in each playoff series in all 3 of their WS years….facts

Just goes to show expert analysis and predictions mean jack squat. Still need to go out there and play the game. Get hot at the right time. That’s baseball. It’s unpredictable.

Which is why teams who go out and trade for a bunch of players/sign a bunch of players and get people excited, almost always fail and end up being the laughing stock, which is what the Padres are on track and will be this year. Facts.

Who cares about matchups on paper. What matters is who wins ball games. And the Giants have 3 rings to show for that. That won’t ever be taken away. FACTS.

well the problem with the projections is that they aren’t nimble so you take an older player and take last years stats and project down and then you reduce that based on ballpark effects when actually all of the players even those that have been scuffling on the giants have had huge benefits from player dev and ballpark reconfiguration – the uptick didn’t come out of nowhere

That must be news to guys like Will Smith, Mark Melancon, Drew Pomeranz, Tyler Anderson, Kevin Pillar, and Tony Watson,

And the reason they won those 3 WS titles is because they had great pitching staffs, both SPs and relievers. Great pitching with average hitting will win more titles than average pitching and great hitting.

tad2b13….Halladay Lee Hamels Oswalt was better than anything the Giants had plus they had Howard Utley Burrell and Rollins and Rolen and Victorino while the Giants had maybe 2 good hitters….and worse starting pitching….

Melancon is done….Smith getting hit hard in Atlanta….the others Pomeranz and Watson and Anderson are average players at best….but on the Giants they were stars….as was Aldrete in the playoffs….and Cody Ross and Renteria….

I’m simply saying these guys seem to have their best seasons in SF….

Take that scrub 3B for instance that nobody wanted Gillespie….hero on the Giants….crazy thing is the Phillies and Tigers were far superior on both sides and couldn’t beat the pesky Giants….

How about the Dodgers or Astros juggernaut teams winning 2 WS between them in the past 10 years yet the Giants who would be a minor league team to both won 3 WS in 5 years….

It wasn’t that they had the best starting pitching because the Phillies did….and it certainly wasn’t they anemic offense….

It was timely hitting from scrubs that no other team wanted until after they played for the Giants and then they bombed….

Winning the WS takes a ton of luck….but finishing the season with the best record takes tons of talent and skill….

Unfortunately the best team doesn’t always win….

You just sound bitter. Did the Giants beat your team in the WS?

The Giants were the best staff in 2010. They led all of baseball with the lowest ERA and the highest ERA+.

Saying they had maybe 2 good hitters is a gross exaggeration. They weren’t a great hitting team in 2010, but the team OPS+ was better than league average. In 2012 they had the 4th highest OPS+ in all of MLB, and the second highest in the NL, 1 point behind the Cards. They were above league average again in 2014

Aldrete? Get your facts straight. Mike Aldrete last played for the Giants in 1988. Calling out individual players, like Gillaspie is purely anecdotal and does support your case whatsoever. Plenty of teams had similar players deliver, like Dave Roberts for the RSox.

tad2b13….not Aldrete….I meant the other scrub 1B Travis Ishakawa who was a hero for the Giants in the playoffs but never had 1 good season his entire career just as Cody Ross and Gillaspie….

Scrubs that played far beyond their capability in the playoffs….pure luck really….they were outmatched in every playoff series every year they won the WS….

They were the underdogs in every playoff series as well….without Bochy they win 0 titles….

Lincecum Cain MadBum (before he became really good)

          Or

          Halladay Lee Hamels Oswalt

Most would say that the Phillies had the better rotation….and 100% would say that the Phillies lineup was twice as good as the Giants….

Look it up go ahead….top 10 wurst lineups to win a WS….

The Giants are in there all 3 times they won the WS….they had a weak lineup compared to the Phillies snd Tigers and Rangers….and their pitching was good but not the best rotation I mean the Phillies had 4 aces while the Giants had 2….

I’m not butt hurt over it but I don’t like when a 9-7 team wins the SB….and that’s exactly what it felt like when the Giants won the WS each year they did….

They weren’t even the best team in their own division much less the entire MLB….

What sucks is that teams like the Astros and Dodgers the past few seasons make those Giants look like a minor league team yet have 2 WS between them while the Giants won 3 in a span of 5 years….mostly by getting lucky hits from scrubs that no other teams wanted….

Sure they won 3 WS but in none of those years were they the best team in the league….top 5 yes but not the best….they weren’t a juggernaut or your typical dynasty team….

I knew they would fall on their faces because they simply weren’t that great to begin with….

The Yankees and Red Sox and Dodgers have down years sure but u never see them in the cellar….they are mediocre for a couple of years and then contend again….

That’s not the Giants….they were bad for years and then won 3 WS in 5 years with weak hitting they became God like in the playoffs….I knew they wouldn’t sustain that success because they kept their old players and didn’t unload them in time….

I called their collapse a few years back….and I’m calling it again now….they will fall on their faces and finish in 4th or 5th place for the next couple years until they unload some bad contracts and reload their system….

Why they didn’t sign Rosario is beyond me as he would have been their best player….that’s how bad they are….

Do they have the most surprisingly successful (and probably unsustainable) pitching staff in baseball right now?

This isn’t necessarily unsustainable. Gausman pairs a high 90s fastball with a devastating split. He’s legit. Cueto looks a lot more like 2016 Cueto then 2020 Cueto—command often returns a year after Tommy John, and this seems to be the case for Cueto. Disco has been a good major league pitcher in the past and looks great coming off a 2020 season derailed by a fluky injury. He doesn’t look like he’s just getting lucky. Aaron Sanchez is rediscovering the success he once had and he’s doing it with a low 90s fastball after hitting 98 in his showcase—there could be even more to come from him. Webb has one of the best changeups in baseball and might be poised to breakout. Wood has had plenty of success when healthy. There are lots of question marks because of some of their injury histories but I wouldn’t assume it is unsustainable.

Can Evan Longoria continue to play like he’s 26 instead of 36? Solano also hitting out of his mind.

The holdovers from the Evans era and some of the work Harris has done has proved to look good over the first few games of the season.

Well, maybe not. But on the other hand will Yastrzemski, Belt, Dickerson, Flores, and Dubon continue to maintain their slow start numbers? Those 5 have OPS+ numbers between 6 and 75. If Longoria and Solano cool down, surely it should be offset by at least some of them heating up.

Besides, I think the Giants early success is more from the success of their pitching, than it is from Longoria and Solano’s hitting.

That is obvious. That is why I stayed away from mentioning the pitching as it’s what Sadler already mentioned, and I replied to it.

It’s definitely a result of their pitching, which as Ezra notes may not cool down. If that pitching stays relatively intact (and Cueto can return quickly), with McGee anchoring that pen, all they need are for the bats to come around to make things interesting. Even when the pitching gets lit early like Gausman the other night, the bats got them back into what became a win.

Will they win or even be 2nd in the division? Of course not. Could they crawl into the postseason? Probably not, but let’s see who’s healthy and peaking at the right time.

You do realize that it’s April right? Like , only 12 games of 162 have been played.

This Giants team is mediocre at best. They will not finish above .500….They just don’t have the talent

This is an old team ( oldest roster in MLB) and if history has taught us anything , it’s taught us that old teams Always get worse ….Never better

TonyGwynnSD19….hit the nail on the head….pretty much the same thing I was saying above….they don’t have the talent and didn’t really have much talent even when they won 3 WS titles though they were better then than they are now for sure but they weren’t by any means a powerhouse team or juggernaut team when they had their WS run and I wouldn’t call them a dynasty either….

They had 3 years where everything went right for them and they beat far superior teams in short playoff series as opposed to the long season of 162 games where they weren’t even the best team in their own division….(Dodgers were)….

I think a full season of 162 games tells more of the picture than a short playoff series that can be won by the hottest team at the time….the years they won the WS 2010, 2012, and 2014….they were like the pesky 10-6 team in football winning the SB over the powerhouse teams that finished 13-3 or 14-2….

Most juggernaut baseball teams that created dynasties like the Yankees and Dodgers and Red Sox of the past had deep lineups and rotations and a decent farm system too….

The Giants weren’t even the best team in their own division and one of those years they got in on the last day of the season needing 2 other teams to lose and they needed to win and all of that happened and then they went on to win the WS beating far superior teams even though they were underdogs in every playoff series….

But with a good but not great roster and a mediocre farm system at the time they weren’t your typical dynasty powerhouse team….a lot of their success was due to Bochy and a lot of it was also luck….

I always say the best team will usually win the most games during the regular season while the hottest team will usually win the WS….I also always say that it takes skill to have the best record while it takes more luck to win the WS….a lot has to go your way to win a title in any sport really….

I called the Giants collapse back in 2015 saying that they weren’t your typical dynasty team that would be good or great for years….they were a good team that got hot at the right time….but without Bochy they would have walked away with 0 WS titles….

Now they are old and have barely any talent and they are playing above their heads right now….they will be lucky to win 81 games….

Also note: if u Google the worst lineups to ever win a WS….say the top 10 worst lineups u will find all 3 Giants WS teams in that search….they won with pitching and timely hits from scrubs….

Now take the Astros and Dodgers as examples of how a powerhouse team should look….both are stacked yet between them they have 2 WS titles in the last 10 years whereas the Giants won 3 WS titles in a span of 5 years with half the talent that the Dodgers and the Astros have….

Take the Phillies for instance when they had Howard and Utley and Rollins and Halladay and Lee and Hamels….yet the Giants beat them in the NLCS….

Take the Astros with Verlander and Cole and Greinke and Bregman and Altuve and Correa and Springer….yet they only have 1 title with that roster….it’s crazy….
