Padres Activate Fernando Tatis Jr.

By Connor Byrne | April 16, 2021 at 5:15pm CDT

APRIL 16: The Padres have activated Tatis, Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets. They optioned infielder Tucupita Marcano to make room for Tatis, per Dennis Lin of The Athletic.

APRIL 15: Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. suffered a catastrophic-looking left shoulder injury on April 5, though it doesn’t appear he’s going to miss much time. Tatis had his day “as far as his at-bats” go on Thursday, according to manager Jayce Tingler, and Dennis Lin of The Athletic tweets that the Padres are “expected” to activate him from the 10-day injured list Friday.

Tatis will be back in time to face the Dodgers, the reigning World Series champions and the NL West leaders who are the biggest obstacle standing in the Padres’ way. San Diego entered 2021 with championship hopes of its own after going 37-23 a year ago, thanks in no small part to Tatis. The 22-year-old wunderkind slashed .277/.366/.571 with 17 home runs and 11 stolen bases last season en route to a fourth-place finish in NL MVP voting.

Tatis could find himself in the thick of the MVP race for a long time, which led the Padres to sign him to a historic 14-year, $340MM extension in the offseason. They and their fans were undoubtedly filled with concern when Tatis went down in their fifth game this season, but he appears to have dodged a significant injury.

With Tatis out, the Padres have gone with Ha-Seong Kim and Jake Cronenworth at short. Both Kim and Cronenworth are versatile enough to play multiple positions, so they should get plenty of time on the field for San Diego when Tatis returns.

It’s the Padres World Series. Dodgers will probably run out half their starters and still win the series. Meanwhile SD has to send Tatis out there with a torn labrum because they are desperate.

Dodgers reposition their rotation all the time. They didn’t want the Rockies to see Kershaw twice. Padres are not that special. It’s nothing compared to letting your franchise player out there with a tear in his shoulder. Absolute desperation just like they did with Clevinger.

You do realize that it is not the Padres choice right? It is up to Tatis. I wanted him to get the labrum trim surgery right away but it wasn’t my choice either. If you want to try to force Tatis to have surgery then good luck with the MLBPA.

@hudson i agree it is his choice for better or worse, and if the docs okay’ed and said no more serious damage will be done then fine. what i worry about tatis playing with his issues that he runs a high risk of getting hooked on pk’s. now i or that’s not the case the kid is electric and is fun to watch and would hate to see his career derail because he forced an issue played while hurt and gets hooked on pk’s.

@ BMcCourt Your logic is what is wrong.. It’s Tatis’ choice, as well as the medical team of experts, not to have surgery (until off-season as preventative measure) which is in effect a decision to play because he has no pain/restrictions, and playing won’t impact his long-term health. The Padres have zero reason to force him to sit on the IL needlessly, just as the Dodgers didn’t sit Bellinger on the IL during 2019 season while he managed his Shoulder Joint Laxity Syndrome. If you followed sports, you’d know that hundreds of professional athletes play through joint laxity issues, and may elect (like Bellinger did) to have corrective surgery off-season (as Tatis might have to do).

Here’s the difference between Bellinger and Tatis that all Padre fans seem to ignore. Tatis hurt himself swinging a bat. He does that 16 times a game. Bellinger hurt himself playing 1B, which he no longer does, and celebrating.

Tatis can destroy his labrum on a single swing. That’s not the normal case for most players with shoulder issues. The risk for Tatis to hurt himself by playing his normal game is exceptionally larger than it was for Bellinger. Because Bellinger’s swing wasn’t the problem

But hey. Who needs to actually look at legitimate comparisons? Cody also had no labrum damage. Honestly aside from it being a shoulder, Bellinger’s injury and recovery has no impact on Tatis. They’re different injuries

This is huge. If he’s going to be playing on that huge contract (which he deserves), there’s an obligation to play through certain types of injuries, so it sounds like he’s getting a little bit more grit and perseverance going.

On top of that, if we’re going to market him as the leader of the “swag” youth movement in Major League Baseball and let players “express themselves” — gold chains, throwing the bat, celebration dances, building a brand, TikToks and things like that — we need Tatis out there EVERY DAY!

Otherwise the youth of the world will play basketball or football.

    GO TATIS!

So many older people who decry “soft” MLB players of today don’t realize that it is the team that is putting the player on IL and keeping them from playing. The players aren’t soft, there is just so much more money tied up in players that teams try to be risk averse

Players today are incredibly soft. Guys sprain a toe nail and they are coming out of games. They are like the younger generation of today in that a lot of youngsters are soft and don’t want to work hard.

Sort of right, but younger players today also are working on their brands, so there’s plenty of other work for Tatis to do. Look at Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes. The veteran destroyed the “next big thing” and what does Mahomes do? Instead of worrying about boring, old-fashioned crap like getting ready for the season or getting revenge on the Buccaneers, Mahomes is building up his brand and working on his investments. This is the cool thing to do, and since Tatis is the face of baseball now, his work on TikTok, Instagram, and Twitch is just as important as his work on the field. MLB needs more swag, not boring players.

          Maybe, @realtime.

But the reality is I – an “older people” -remember not all that long ago when playing 162 games in a season wasn’t really a notable accomplishment. Most regulars typically played in 140+.
& innings pitched is not even comparable to a just a decade ago.

Now I don’t know if it’s necessarily about being “sawft”. However, it is a noticeable & significant change.

          Ok.

It WAS different for owners AND players. Teams did not even fraternize with each other. Came in hard at second and home. Was the way it had always been taught, Players also all had off season straight jobs. Did not earn the big bucks so were not considered as much to be protected as assets financially,

Swag and tiktok? Are we now banking on teenage fans with after school fast food jobs to float the sports future? The younger fans prefers highlights and daily gambling. Not the sort of attention required to wrangle in a sincere generation of fandom.

Baseball will never be “cool”. A well done bat flip is as Sinatra as it gets. I imagine it eventually moves closer to the NHL in terms of general interest.

          @Egon ….Slippery slope here

Baseball is a game of fundamentals. I worry the next generation will take shortcuts and never learn them if all they want to do is hit 500 ft hrs and strike everyone out on the mound-

“Apps’ “Swag meters” etc etc does not teach you the fundamentals of baseball. You learn to field grounders the right way by taking um off the chest in practice, you learn to hit a curveball by hanging tough in the box during live batting practice (even wearing a couple), you learn to slide the right way by tearing up your knee and learning from experience

Instagram, apps, twitter, Tik Tok is not going to teach these things; in fact it will probably push them further aside .

There is a problem with how baseball markets its players no doubt –
Kiki Hernandez sold more jerseys than Mike Trout last year, that’s incredibly stupid
Another gripe I have is the local broadcast systems and blackouts in home markets- Dodger fans went years without being able to reasonably watch there own damn team down the street ….thank goodness for piracy huh !

I dont have all the answers but I dont think the answer lies in Tik Tok or social media . At some point its going to come down to the parents just taking the damn phones outta the kids hand and bussing them to practice

Again baseball is a game of fundamentals, w/out them the game becomes unwatchable no matter how many bat flips occur nightly

”… a lot of youngsters are soft and don’t want to work hard.”

Every generation says that about the generation following them.

As for ball players not being as “tough” as they once were, advances in sports medicine mean that players, trainers, physicians and ball clubs are better equipped to decide the best course of action to deal with inevitable injuries. Elite players have longer careers than they once did.

Just to bring a little perspective to guys playing 162. Since MLB expanded to a 162 game season in 1961, there have been 269 instances of players playing a full 162 games, or about 4.5/season. Over the past 3 seasons, it’s happened 17 times, or 5.67/season.

Just looking at a couple of random seasons I pulled out of the air to compare games played to today’s players. In 1965, 84 players played in 140+ games. In 1972, 65 players played in 140+ games. In 1984, 94 players did it and in 1996, 122 players did. In 2019, 92 players, in 2018, 104, in 2017, 108.

A small, random sample, but nothing there to indicate that players were tougher or played more back in the day, then the players today.

Not a lawyer! I’m an actuary. That means I quantify the cost of risk. I work with data. So when I look at numbers or dollars over a period of time I know that the “base” might have changed. In the case of player numbers, there were 20 teams in 1965 and 30 teams in 2017. So the 1965 number of 84 and the 2017 number of 108 actually indicates a drop from 4.2 players per team to 3.6 players per team. To get an accurate measure you would need to look at every year’s numbers, normalize them for the number of teams at the time, then look for trends over time. There would be fluctuation from year to year, so you could maybe look at five year periods and see if there’s a trend. It would possibly tell you something about the players but it might also tell you something about traveling in baseball. For example, some of the new teams are in places near to existing teams making for less travel but some teams are in new places which creates more travel. I really think that is part of the impact on players being able to play as many games as possible. I know this is way more information than you need on a Saturday but it’s what I do in my spare time. I delve into statistics. They fascinate me. So, basically, I’m a numbers guy.

But when the children of San Pedro de Macoris or the inner-cities of America tune in to see charismatic superstars with swag, they need to see TATIS standing on shortstop!

If they see Ha-Seong Kim (I had to look his name up since he isn’t as popular or has as much SWAG) instead of Tatis, it’s going to be very disappointing and they’ll tune back into the NBA.

We need the children watching MLB to save the game for future generations!

Perhaps MLB can add a Swag Rating when a cool, hip pitcher is on the mound — maybe one with a big following on Instagram or TikTok — rather than some old veteran who doesn’t care about the youth.

“OMG BLAKE SNELL!!! He won’t pitch 5 innings but OMG I follow him on Twitch!”

The doctors have said here is no way to make the injury worse by playing, so I don’t know why you want the team to be a bunch of pansies.

I DEFINITELY wouldn’t fault the Twins for postponing their ONE game after the Wright shooting. What I DO fault the players on is that they aren’t out there protesting themselves and sitting out INDEFINITELY, instead of one little game being postponed. Hit the team where it hurts, and hit the city where it hurts until actual changes are made.

Steve, I can say with caution that I somewhat agree with you, I’m no doctor, (but I do work right next to them) but have been injured with a very similar injury. Although damage may not get worse, him continuing to play through it will only prolong the injury as it can’t get better. I think this isn’t going to end well for the young star imo

@egon why should the players go out and protest, my of them most likely don’t live in minnesota other than the season, and i’ll bet at least 1/4 of there roster lives out of country in the offseason. now if a player wants to go and protest then go for it but as an owner i wouldn’t want them to. pro athletes are an investment and if they get hurt because for whatever reason why the protest went south. as an owner i’m not going to be happy because of the fact of your position what i invested in you and you put yourself in a bad position.

To think you cannot go from a partial tear to a larger tear doing the exact activity you originally hurt yourself doing is hilarious

Tatis went from a separated shoulder, to a separated shoulder with a labrum tear in just 3 weeks. All from basic baseball activities. He’s already shown the injury can worsen!

Every report I’ve seen on this topic has stated he’s risking further “instability” by playing without surgery. You do realize instability is what will lead to a more substantial tear, right? I would bet money that any doctor that has said he does not risk further injury heavily qualified his statement and you likely are misquoting them

For ex, the CBS article that started with “if this is his first time having the issue” which it isn’t. So everything that doctor said about first time injuries doesn’t apply. Isn’t that amazing!? And I’m not taking aPreller quote as justification. He’d be the biggest liar in a room full of politicians

It’ll take more than grit to hold a shoulder in socket, especially swinging a bat with Major League caliber violence on the joint. Hopefully, for him and for baseball, he’s good to go.

That is kind of sad. Tatis had an injury that cannot heal itself in that amount of time and once there is a tear, something the Padres have said happened, it only gets worse without extended rest and rehab or surgery. So to get him back to shore up an anemic offense they are going to risk serious season ending surgery.

BJ Upton had this same type of injury and rushed back from it. After that he was never the same. Hope the Padres are not shooting the gift horse in the mouth so to speak by rushing Tatis back.

Medical professionals say a partial shoulder subluxation with no tear of the labrum require a minimum of 4 weeks and up to 8 weeks. With a tear, no matter how small, they do not heal at all without prolonged rest and rehab or surgery. So I will take the word of medical professionals.

The Padres are not required to bring Tatis back now and doing so risks serious, season ending injury. Worse case scenario is what happened to Upton. Superstar to also ran for the rest of his career.

The labrum tear was “slight”. The bigger problem is shoulder joint laxity syndrome (Bellinger has this too)., which increases probability of repeated subluxations. To correct this he’ll need surgery and that’s likely to be done at seasons end. Until then he can play, manage any pain, and hope additional subluxations occur during season.

Why bring your religion into this? He hopes for no additional partial subluxations because he wants to play the present season and not have another IL stint. But there is a higher probability for another sub flux, statistically. At this point I don’t expect you to understand the logic of the decision, nor the science of risk assessment, but your boy Bellinger was also knowingly playing through the same medical condition until he opted for corrective surgery in the off-season. Key word, off-season. Try to enjoy the game and chill, launder the your spit bib.

          Praying? Because I said hope?

Bellinger had a separation (dislocation) and it also revealed a minor tear. They didn’t do surgery to repair the tear (or the dislocation), they did corrective surgery to stabilize the joint because Bellinger (like Tatis) suffers from Shoulder Joint Laxity Syndrome. Tatis will likely opt for the same corrective surgery off-season. Thus the connection between Bellinger’s laxity and Tatis’. This is probably the 29th time I’ve tried to explain this and I gather you won’t get it this time either. Best do some reading?

No no. There was no tear for Bellinger. You are making things up to make your point. Please quote your source that said Bellinger had a labrum tear they didn’t fix. Not an opinion of a guy who never saw Cody 10 minutes after the game. An actual doctor who saw Cody or did the surgery. Omg you are amazing! Get over it. Bellinger had no labrum tear. Tatis has a small tear. they are different. Why is this SO HARD!!??

You have NEVER “proven” this. Because you are making stuff up

Labrum tears NEVER heal on their own. The dodgers didn’t just say “nah leave it”. Get an actual credible source or stop with your BS claims. You have proven NOTHING by repeating a lie over and over

Not sure what the policy is, meaning if the “lucky” fan gets to keep the arm. Probably could get a lot for it on eBay. Tatis himself will probably bid.

The thing to remember is that most MLB players have some sort of tear in their rotator cuff or labrum. Overhand throwing is not a ‘normal’ motion for a shoulder, so there is some sort of fray or small tear in these muscles in a lot of players. I’m sure Tatis’ issue has been looked at by some of the best shoulder surgeons in the world and if he is coming back now, they are not concerned by it. He went down because the tear ‘plucked the nerve’ in his shoulder. So long as the tear is small and not frayed to the point where it will continue to irritate the nerve he should be fine, especially since the tear is in his non-throwing shoulder. He should be able to play through this issue without causing too much discomfort or pain and continuing to strengthen the surrounding muscles will prevent the tear from getting worse. Relax Padres fans; he will be fine!

This shoulder thing has been an issue for a couple years for him, and seems to be getting worse and injured more frequently. I’m not claiming to be an expert by any means, but I bet his shoulder doesn’t make it through the season. I really hope I’m wrong as he’s so good for the league, and fun to watch.

Well to be fair I disagree with everything the Cubs have done in recent years too. I try to call it as I see it, regardless of fandom.

Imagine rushing your 340M investment back in year 1 because you’re worried you play your rival 7 times in 11 days

A 9.5 game deficit for SD by the last week in April would be pretty embarrassing I guess. Hey. It’s just a 12-18 month recovery from a full labrum tear recovery. What risk!?!

Imagine thinking additional rest is a palatable treatment for Tatis’ injury.

Never said it was Lazing. Nice lack of reading comprehension

Now imagine thinking you can’t injury yourself further doing the same action you hurt yourself the first time? That’s the entire Padre fan base right now

Sorry @brewer, it’s not a mis-narrative when this is exactly what is happening.

They say Tampa rarely loses a trade but Croenworth sure looks like the one that got away so far.

He looks even better this year than last, but he needs a nickname.

I thought it was a good trade for Pads at the time because of Pham (who’s really disappointed), but it goes to show that trades need to play as it’s the hidden gems that often surprise. Edwards is still a wildcard.

        His nickname is Rake Cronengirth.

Trade will come down to who has the better career out of Crone and Edwards. And no, I don’t care if Crone produced sooner than Edwards.

Let’s see how Edwards does before declaring Tampa losers in that trade

Rays got what they wanted. They have Lowe at 2b. Diaz at 3b and wendle and brosseau. They got an upper tier prospect in Edwards and most importantly paid only $3 mill for 1 year of renfroe instead of $17 mill for 2 seasons of pham. So JC really cost SD Edwards, $14 mill and an extra season of Pham. I think that’s much closer to a fair trade than an outright win for SD. Considering pham’s continuing struggles the rays are still good on the deal.

Padres didn’t have to tender Pham for 2021 so paying him that money isn’t a negative for them and losing him wasn’t a positive for Tampa in and of itself. Nice try tho.

Trade will come down to Edwards and Crone.

You sure? Not paying Pham was certainly one of, if not, the reason for TB to make the trade in the first place. That was a positive for them even at his production value at the time. And if Pham doesn’t recover his production how can that $ spent on him not be a negative? How can Pham not be be a factor? TB got what they wanted (payroll relief and a solid prospect risk). SD wanted a util inf and starting OF and instead got a starting inf and floundering OF.

No StudWinfield. You’re wrong. If not paying Pham was seen as a positive for the Rays he would have been non-tendered. Losing a player who is still is arb in never a positive. The Rays didn’t see losing Pham as a positive, they saw it as the cost of doing business. And saying that it was a positive based on his production post-trade is simply an ex ante vs. ex post logical fallacy.

          @StudWinfield Yeah, that’s what I thought.

Losing a player who is still in arb is never a good thing. If it was, he would be non-tendered.

Hardly. He’s played 3months in SD. He’s had 2 strong months and one horrible month. And he disappeared in Oct

Amazing how many people make proclamations without even a years worth of at bats. Meanwhile the prize for TB hasn’t even debuted. Let it play out

Obviously we don’t know from the inside of the organization … but this feels like a rush back to action to justify the contract and the team buzz. It wouldn’t shock me if he got hurt worse and this move backfires badly.

How about this kid going yard in his first game back from the IL from what appeared to be a very painful injury. What a stud!!!

And then he takes less than 6 innings to dive against doctors orders and further losses the game twice with his defense trying to be the guy on Quick Pitch. He’s already got 7 errors in a season thats 13 games old and he missed 10 days!

Tatis looks like a 22 year old 340M future DH. What a stud! Oh wait that’s bad
