The Padres have placed right-hander Chris Paddack on the injured list and selected the contract of fellow righty Miguel Diaz, the team announced.
“I can’t really disclose a lot of information,” manager Jayce Tingler said of Paddack’s IL placement (via AJ Cassavell of MLB.com).
Tingler’s comment suggests Paddack is out for reasons related to COVID-19. Regardless, he’s the latest Padres starter to go on the shelf in the past couple weeks, joining righty Dinelson Lamet (forearm) and lefty Adrian Morejon (Tommy John surgery).
Paddack was a standout for the Padres in his debut campaign, 2019, but hasn’t been able to match his rookie production over the past season-plus. The 25-year-old hasn’t lasted more than 5 1/3 innings in any of his five starts this season, and across 23 1/3 overall frames, he has recorded a disappointing 5.40 ERA. However, some of Paddack’s other numbers – including a 3.22 FIP, a 3.66 xFIP, a 3.98 SIERA and a 6.7 percent walk rate – have been much more favorable.
Diaz, 26, appeared with the Padres in each season from 2017-19, but he could only muster a 6.61 ERA during that 66 2/3-inning stretch. The Padres non-tendered Diaz heading into the 2020 season, but they quickly brought him back on a minor league contract. They re-signed him to another minors deal prior to this season.

Ok. Something’s up with MacKenzie Gore
oldmansteve
Paddack doesn’t start until May 3rd. Lamet is expected to fill that spot in the rotation. Padres are gunna run extra bullpen arm until then. No need to call up a starter.

Lamet’s arm is not attached to the rest of his body

You got a source for that claim?

Hes struggling with control.
This is from Fangraphs.com yesterday
“I’ve spoken with a couple of scouts who have seen some of Gore’s starts at the alternate site in Arizona and they’ve seen what I saw during his first two spring outings: Gore’s heater remains in the 93-96 range and is capable of missing bats in the strike zone because of its combination of velocity and ride, but his command is still not good. Because of its action, the fastball has margin for error in this regard but Gore’s two breaking balls do not, and he needs to find more consistent feel for locating those to his glove side to be the kind of pitcher it looked like he’d become as an amateur and throughout his remarkable 2019 season. He could probably scrap his way through a big league start right now but hasn’t looked dominant yet this year.”
DarkSide830
yes, if what you mean is he’s barely played above A+ ball.

Didn’t stop them from calling up Patiño, Weathers, Campusano and whoever else they called up
I Beg To Differ
To pitch out of the pen? Patino was called up to throw 100+ out of the pen. Weathers was called up for playoffs cause of injuries to Lamet and Clevinger.
Different circumstances than Gore.
Deleted Userrr
They still had barely played above A+ ball when they were called up.
I Beg To Differ
They were still called up for different reasons. Padres don’t seem interested in using Gore out of the pen.
Deleted Userrr
Never said they weren’t. Was responding to @DarkSide830 saying that they aren’t calling Gore up because he’s barely pitched above A+ ball. That’s never stopped them before.

Paddack has been so bad the Marlins are probably over trading him. 50/50 chance he is even on the Padres by 2022.
Deleted_User
How is Fernando Rodney doing for the Marlins?
amk1920
I said they are over it, not that they won the trade.
I Beg To Differ
Chances are they shift paddack to the pen.
Stammen (option), Kela, Johnson free agents after the season
Stammen, strahm, Melancon after 2022
Fastball and changeup in the pen have worked for guys like Joaquin Benoit
Hudson6
Joaquin Benoit was successful with just a fastball and changeup? Wasn’t Fernando Rodney, the guy he was traded for, a closer with the same arsenal? I seem to remember another closer who was pretty successful in San Diego with just a fastball and amazing changeup. What was his name…? Hoffman?
I Beg To Differ
Yes. His teo most used pitches were fastball change-up.
Also, I brought up Jouaquin Benoit for two reasons.
1. I don’t see Paddack being the closer next year or the year after. I see him being a set up man, which is what Jouaquin Benoit did for 12 years full time.
2. Benoit’s first 4 years he was a starter/swinging for Texas with middling results before making the switch to pen full time at 28.

What does so bad mean?
I think his struggles have been overrated.
I mean, he’s not an ACE but he is a solid number 5
VegasSDfan
1-3, 5.40 era, I predict he improves once he returns from the IL.
CNichols
There was a single stat correction that took his ERA out of the 3s and into the 5s last week too. He hasn’t been great by any means but he’s certainly a passable rotation option.
Brew’88
Paddack hasn’t been very good since 2019, we keep waiting for him to regain his fastball location and I’m not confident he’ll figure things out. I sense that the organization isn’t either.
Speaking of wait-and-see, the Padres’ bigger problem is lack of hitting (team-wide) and it can no longer be explained by the competition they’ve faced. Too many unprofessional ABs, taken 3rd strikes
mlb1225
Do the Padres swing a trade for another starter at the deadline? I don’t mean make another big Snell/Darvish/Musgrove trade, but like the Pirates are likely going to trade someone like Tyler Anderson who’s been doing pretty well and on a cheap 1 year deal. Not a bad option for a back of the rotation arm who gives you 5-6 solid innings every 5 days.
Baseball 1600
Anderson seems like more of a lowkey under the radar pick up for a team like KC or maybe Anaheim. Padres probably don’t have room for him on a playoff roster
mlb1225
Any lefty who can go 5-6 innings while getting a handful of swings and misses is bound to get a decent amount of attention this trade deadline. I do admit I see more of a fit on those teams than the Padres, but it’s not like the Padres need to make another deal for a big-time starter. They have a handful of young pitchers already. Darvish, Musgrove, Snell, Weathers makes a very good 1-4. Next year, they should have guys like Morejon and Gore getting starts at least semi-regularly. Anderson is far from the worst #5 starter when your 1-4 starters are as strong as theirs are.
Brew’88
Morejon’s TJS likely keeps him out until late next year
CNichols
Clevinger is coming back too next year and in theory Lamet should be throwing in games again soon. Everyone is controlled through 2022 so if a rental makes sense.
I wonder if Cole Hamels has anything left in the tank. A pro-rated deal for him likely wouldn’t be too bad, but there’s also probably a reason that he’s unsigned right now…
Brew’88
Clevinger has to overcome 2nd TJS, which is 50-50. If Lamet doesn’t come back fully, and with Morejon down for some time (hopefully not Weathers too), I would not be surprised if the Pads go after another high end SP through trade, dangling Campusano..
I Beg To Differ
Yes. Probably a rental or 2.
Danny Duffy, Corey Kluber, could bring back Zach Davies.
Depends where they are at.
oldmansteve
If the Royals are smart, they would move Duffy ASAP. His value will never be higher than right now.
DarkSide830
man if they trade for a whole rotation within a year…wow.
VegasSDfan
Yes, I believe they are looking.
bbatardo
Def Covid, we were trying to figure out who Wil Myers came in contact with to be bumbed from their game Wed.
BeforeMcCourt
I don’t know, teams claiming they care about player privacy yet we instantly know why someone is missing, because their description is so out of left field
Why not just say general soreness? That’s a heckuva lot more vague than “can’t discuss it, but there’s only 1 thing I have to answer this way”
And yea, I know this is an mlb gripe, not team specific
I Beg To Differ
Teams can’t lie about injuries or health status of a player.
They can’t talk about it, but they can’t lie about either.
DarkSide830
they should just always be ambiguous but that probably annoys fantasy people and we know these leagues are sellouts to fantasy.
gbs42
Going on the IL for COVID-19 reasons, such as a reaction to the second shot, allows a player to come back after any period of time. Going on the IL for “general soreness” would require a 10-day stint. It’s seems an odd exception, but teams can’t disclose COVID-19 info without the player’s permission.
VegasSDfan
Agree, this is likely a reaction to the vaccine.
CrikesAlready
Paddack is Andrew Cashner part deux. Love the personality, useless as a pitcher.
Brew’88
not a bad comparison

Anyone notice Lauer beat the doyers last week ugh.
