Jacob deGrom Dealing With Right Lat Inflammation

By Connor Byrne | May 4, 2021 at 6:12pm CDT

6:12pm: The MRI revealed inflammation in deGrom’s right lat, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. While deGrom will take a few days off from throwing, the Mets don’t plan to place him on the injured list.

4:25pm: DeGrom will undergo an MRI this afternoon, manager Luis Rojas announced (via Healey).

4:04pm: The Mets have scratched ace Jacob deGrom from his scheduled start Tuesday because of “right side tightness,” Tim Healey of Newsday was among those to tweet. Righty Miguel Castro will take the ball against the Cardinals in deGrom’s place.

A major injury to deGrom could have a crippling effect on the Mets’ chances of contending for a playoff spot, but it doesn’t appear this is an especially serious issue, Jeff Passan of ESPN hears. Rather, deGrom may miss just one start, per Passan.

After a highly active offseason, the Mets have come out flat in 2021 with an 11-12 record, but deGrom certainly isn’t to blame. The two-time National League Cy Young winner is in top form at the age of 32, having pitched to a major league-leading 0.51 ERA over five starts and 35 innings. DeGrom is also pacing all starters in strikeout rate (48 percent) and swinging-strike rate (23 percent), and his K-BB percentage (44.7) is second only to the Brewers’ Corbin Burnes.

Sorry to interrupt this program, but JAVY BAEZ WALKED TODAY!!! His second walk of the year! Good job! He has a long way to go before he gets to the likely contracts that Corey Seager and Trevor Story will get, but it’s great to see Little Javy knows how to do something other than striking out.

With the way they’re wording it, it seems like this is a precautionary thing. If they were in the playoffs, I assume he’d pitch through this. This sounds like the Mets just protecting their ace.

Seriously. To say this man has yet to throw anything other than a quality start this season would still understate what he has done. Just two runs allowed in 35 IP. I wonder if he allowed those 2 runs only to keep his cover as a mild mannered baseball player rather than be revealed as an advanced, cybernetic android sent from the future to take over the world.

Wow, And Gausman and while not suggesting injury, Kershaw lasted 1 horrible inning today. As a baseball fan these injuries seem to be way out of proportion. I read a post where it was suggested that the teams are being over cautious and some of these injuries are more routine but the short season issues is causing caution everywhere. It’s a shame that these quality arms are faltering. Hopefully not as bad for deGrom though – good luck.

He never looked comfortable with the mound in his last start. You could see he was having trouble getting loose, even stretching after pitches late in the game. I’m guessing he is just erring on the side of caution.

What IS concerning is that this is two starts in a row that he needed extra rest. That goes back to his complete game in Colorado. He may have pitched through something in that first game after the CG or felt something in his off day regimen, left over and just isn’t feeling “right” yet. He’s in great shape, so I’m going with “Let’s not strain an oblique and give it another day or so.”

Kind of surprised they didn’t call someone up, though. Yesterday was long reliever day, so that basically eliminates three guys in Lucchesi, Reid-Foley and Gsellman. Diaz may not be available and Familia?

    Tarpley, Eichkoff (sp) or Yamamoto?

72-53 lifetime for deGrom. The Mets have a losing record over his career. There is only so much a starting pitcher can do for an otherwise bad team. .

The same Mets teams de Grom has been on has had pitchers with better winning percentages than de Grom, every year.
Also, look at some of the names of pitchers that “outpitch” him… In his Cy Young year of 2019, 5 of his 11 wins were against those mighty Miami Marlins.
Losses to Kyle Gipson, Paddock, Teheran, Chase Anderson, Soroka, Lester…

We all know how the Mets handle their injury information….
    1. The player gets hurt. Pulled from a game
    2. The team says the player is fine, just “dealing with something”.
    3. An actual MRI is done
    4. The team says the player has a minor injury but no IL will be needed.
    5. Days go by… reporters ask about player.. player is “fine”
    6. After a few days he is put on the IL retroactively but only for a “few days”
    7. Player has surgery but expected to be back in a “couple weeks”
    8. Player misses the rest of the season. Team fails to acknowledge this
    9. Hitting coach gets fired.
    10. Mets fail to make the postseason.
    11. Spring training

DeGrom won’t get his 100th win until sometime in the 2023 season… when he’s 35. Seems unlikely the HOF would stretch that far south, but he might consider jumping teams by then… probably looking at 5-year contract, maybe 150 M. Yankees? Dodgers? Red Sox?
