Angels Select Phil Gosselin, Designate Scott Schebler

By Connor Byrne | May 4, 2021 at 6:24pm CDT

The Angels have selected the contract of infielder Phil Gosselin and designated outfielder Scott Schebler for assignment, per a team announcement.

This is now the ninth straight season in the bigs for Gosselin, whom the Angels signed to a minor league contract over the winter. The 32-year-old has appeared in the majors with six teams, most recently the Phillies, and put together a .261/.314/.361 line in 749 plate appearances. Gosselin has experience at several positions, including third base, where he’ll start for the Angels on Tuesday. Starter Anthony Rendon will sit because of a knee contusion.

Schebler, another of the Angels’ offseason minor league additions, had his contract selected in mid-April. The two-time 30-home run hitter has failed to impress since then, however, with a mere four hits (three doubles and a single) in 27 plate appearances. Schebler struck out 11 times while recording no walks during that span.

Gosselin was a pretty fantastic player in limited action last year.

He won’t be here long. If Rendon hadn’t fouled a ball off his league he wouldn’t be here now.

Pretty sure Schleber has hit 30 or more HRs only once.

Yeah I think he may have him confused with Duvall

Correct. Schebler hit 30 in 2017 with the Reds.

Schebler didn’t hit. I feel bad for him, but you earn your chances and he didn’t earn more. He could have run away with that RF job, he just didn’t do what he needed to do.

Was pulling for Scheb… I don’t get it. That 30 hr year with the Reds he was a beast. He hit the ball harder than I had ever seen, line shot layers with serious authority, and all over the field. smh

67 RBIs on 30 HR is an amazing feat, and not the good kind of amazing.

Did Ned Schebler get canned by the Angels? Or was it Dewey Finn after John Cusacks sister discovered he was a poseur and had no ball skills at all?

Who cares? The Angels have the third worst run differential in baseball with negative 25. They have allowed opposing teams to score 156 runs, which is second worst in baseball. Without fixing the pitching, any other move is just white noise.

Also, team ERA thus far is fourth worst at 5.04 along with fourth worst WHIP at 1.407.

I understand, vizion, but I am not a fan of making predictions, especially when none of us are in baseball. However, now that we have a 28 game sample size and see the results, we should be acquiring pitching and making some immediate changes. If this trajectory continues to the ASB, we will be out of it and any pitching moves will be irrelevant.

I know a lot of people have been critical of Moreno. In the last several years we have had 3 GMs and 3 managers trying to build and manage this team with no success, even with the best player in baseball and other greats in the line up. The only constant over those years is Moreno. Insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result. No pitching = no post season. It’s a proven fact.

I can’t recall one other poster who was on my side when I wrote Quintana was a bad signing. Maybe there was one. And you were one of the few who backed me when I was so upset with the bullpen moves.

Completely unfair to Schebler, especially after his seamless replacement of Trout in every way (except hitting, defense, baserunning and plate discipline)
