Astros Place Alex Bregman On 10-Day IL With Quad Injury

By Anthony Franco | June 17, 2021 at 3:19pm CDT

TODAY: Bregman has been officially placed on the injured list, Dusty Baker told Mark Berman and other reporters.  Outfielder/catcher Garrett Stubbs has been called up to take Bregman’s spot on the active roster.

JUNE 16, 10:29pm: A more specific timeline for Bregman’s return will become clearer tomorrow, but it seems he’s looking at an injured list stint. Manager Dusty Baker told reporters (including Berman) the expectation is Bregman will be out “for a while.”

7:53pm: Bregman departed due to a left quad strain, relays Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle.

7:37pm: Astros star Alex Bregman left this evening’s game against the Rangers in the first inning. Bregman appeared to suffer a lower body injury while trying to beat out a ground ball (video provided by Mark Berman of Fox 26). Robel García replaced him at third base.

Bregman is amidst another very strong season, albeit not at his 2018-19 MVP-caliber level. The 27-year-old is hitting .275/.359/.428 (121 wRC+) with seven homers over his first 262 plate appearances. At 38-28, Houston sits three games back of the Athletics in the AL West, so a significant injury to Bregman would be a devastating blow. Of course, there’s no indication at this point he’s facing any sort of long-term absence.

If Bregman were to miss time, García and Abraham Toro would seem the likeliest options to pick up the slack at the hot corner. Primary utilityman Aledmys Díaz is out until at least late July due to a hand fracture.

IKR? But he’s prob on a short leash, like when they dfa’d Straw & Tucker a month ago sub .150 BA’s – I think both those guys are playing indy-ball in Yugoslavia now.

Astros front office horrendous judges of talent.

They are such bad judges of talent they lead MLB in average, hits, and RBIs with many regulars missing two weeks due to covid and are 7th in Pitching even with the loss of Verlander for the year and Framber for most of the season.

Seems to me that they haven’t missed a beat, and decisions are still being made as brilliantly as under Luhnow – rarely seen a team for whom EVERY personnel move seems to work out well as much as they do for Astros

No, I don’t, but not for the reason you may think. The only astors players I have some disdain for are Bregman and Correa. They were the only 2 who were really unapologetic about what happened, expressed no remorse. I’ve gotten over the rest (Altuve, Springer, etc) honestly

Like I’m okay with hating cheating, I just want people to hate all cheating. Don’t pull for Springer just because he’s in Toronto now, or let Alex Cora off the hook because he’s in Boston, AJ Hinch in Detroit. Btw, notice how quickly Hinch and Cora got jobs in baseball? Day they were eligible I believe. Mets and blue jays fought over Springer and when Correa hits FA, teams will line up to pay him. Baseball execs don’t care about the scandal and fans only seem to if it’s current Astros guys. So I truly don’t mind the boos, I mind the hypocrisy. Additionally, Altuve didn’t even use the trash can much, certainly less than Marwin, Springer, or Correa, yet he gets the brunt of the boos and doesn’t complain. Other people around the league may hate Jose but we love that guy and I’m proud to call that guy an Astro, even if he got caught up in some bad stuff.

I think a large part of that stems from how Jim Crane reacted to the scandal. The man is out of touch and took very little accountability. Not that that attitude doesn’t apply to many other owners across sports. I don’t care if he was aware of it or not. Cheating has always been part of the game. Remember corked bats? Then ash bats became the rage for a hot minute. and now it’s the norm.

100% agree. That PR team should have been fired for that awful press conference. They owned up to the cheating (yes they apologized, maybe not as apologetic as other fans wanted but they did), but to be naive that they were the only team cheating is just dumb.

We have an entire league of pitchers that we have factual proof that their RPMs have plummeted since they stopped using sticky stuff. The MLB was well aware the Astros and others were sign stealing with technology. As they were well aware of most the pitchers in the league using foreign substances on the ball. The MLB wanted to just use the Astros as the example so ppl like you would just dislike them and think they were alone in the sign stealing. It’s a league full of cheaters in every way they can imagine.
