Braves Outright Victor Arano

By Steve Adams | June 6, 2021 at 2:59pm CDT

JUNE 6: Arano has cleared waivers and been sent outright to Gwinnett, per David O’Brien of the Athletic (Twitter link). He doesn’t have the requisite service time to reject a minor league assignment, so he’ll remain with the Stripers and look to pitch his way back onto the 40-man roster.

JUNE 4: The Braves announced Friday that they’ve designated right-handed reliever Victor Arano for assignment. His spot on the 40-man roster will go to right-hander Ty Tice, whose previously reported acquisition from the Blue Jays has now been formally announced by the Braves.

The 26-year-old Arano has been excellent in the big leagues when healthy, pitching to a combined 2.65 ERA with a 26.3 percent strikeout rate and 7.6 percent walk rate in 74 2/3 innings for the Phillies from 2017-19. Unfortunately, healthy innings are far from a given with Arano. He missed the vast majority of the 2019 season due to elbow surgery, and he’s also missed time in the past due to a rotator cuff strain in his pitching shoulder. He spent last year in the Phillies’ 60-man player pool but wasn’t called to the Majors. The Braves claimed him off waivers back in February.

Arano was a starter early in his minor league career with the Phillies but moved to the ’pen on a full-time basis in 2016. He racked up 79 2/3 innings out of the ’pen across two levels that season, but he’s managed to throw just 126 1/3 innings combined since that season drew to a close. He’s appeared in eight games with Triple-A Gwinnett in 2021, during which time he’s yielded four runs (three earned) on seven hits, four walks and a hit batter through seven innings. He’s punched out five hitters along the way.

It seems as though the Braves weren’t enamored of what they saw in that brief stretch of games. They’ll now have a week to trade Arano or to attempt to pass him through outright waivers. He can still be optioned both this year and next, which could lead another club to take a chance on the talented but (at least recently) oft-injured righty.

I’m fine if the jays acquire arano, but the Braves keep the soul patch.

Weird. I just thought about Arano a couple of hours ago, was wondering if he was still with the Braves. Be cool if Philly would re-sign him to a minors deal…

Who would you kick off the 40 man for him?

Only interested if he clears and gets released, then signs on a minors deal, in which case he’s off the 40 man…

Dayton, Webb, maybe Tomlin even. Arano has nice stats from Philly, a team will grab him quickly.

I don’t understand. The article states he has options, he’s pitching ok ish in the minors. I don’t see why would we DFA him. Idk. Something more to this that we can’t see or I don’t understand.

Full 40 man roster. Braves like Tice and 39 other guys ahead of Arano. He could still end up staying with the Braves in AAA, though he’d be off the 40 man…

I gotcha. For some reason I thought getting optioned took you off the 40 man roster. Nvm. Thanks

It’s sad that the Marlins are the only NL East team with multiple World Series titles SINCE they went to three divisions per league.

Brian Snitker shouldn’t make it to the all star break for still not knowing how bullpens work after being in baseball for like 50 years. Pathetic.

Maybe they should designate Newk after that showing tonight against the Dodgers. 27 year old who can’t throw strikes or strike people out.

Sad that the two runs he walked in with three straight free passes went against Anderson. The only good thing that happened was Dayton coming in and allowing all three of Newks walks come around to score on a couple of hits .. so that Newks ERA would suffer.

So many Braves fans trash on Luke Jackson, but to me he is a far better option than running Newk out there. And I actually thought he had a chance to be something a few years ago. Silly me.

Unfortunately Newcomb seems like a head case. He’s made it well known over the years he wants to be a starter. He should embrace a bullpen role. Guy needs to throw strikes. Dayton is horrible as well. I’d be at least send Newcomb to AAA to figure out how to throw strikes but Dayton needs to be DFA….

What is he doing in such a high leverage situation to begin with? You’re going to bring a left hander that can’t throw strikes in against a righty heavy lineup starting with Mookie Betts? That’s on Snitker. Pathetic management.

Grant Dayton strikes again!!! Newk is a wash. I’ll say it again, your strength in 20 was your bullpen yet you let Melancon go who btw has 18 saves. You wait until late May to sign Shane Greene who you traded for and is a former closer. It’s no surprise that these guys are getting rocked.

It’s amazing how bad the braves have been managed this year from a personal standpoint. They seem to think that they can bring in any Ole guy and make him an all star and when it doesn’t work they get another regular guy and try again. How about they redesign their development program and change how they teach/train players in the minors. It’s not working. Especially how they are teaching young pitchers. It’s insane how bad braves pitchers are with 0-2 counts, next pitch right down the middle and it’s hit for a home run. Braves pitchers across the board would rather throw balls and hope the batter chases than to say to themselves. I’m gonna throw my best pitch in the zone and he isn’t gonna hit it. No confidence, no swag. NO CLUE how to do their job successfully. The braves system is very flawed and serious chnages need to be made pronto. They are wasting service time of their young core players and guys like Acuña and Albies will sign elsewhere where they will get paid their true value when their contracts are up. If I were Swanson or riley I wouldn’t re-sign with the braves when I could get twice the amount elsewhere. Braves expect “homegrown discounts” but if players sign for less they wanna see that the rest of the money goes to making the team better by getting other quality free agents. Not directly into Liberty’s pockets. I have serious concerns that Freddie has/is considering not re-signing with the braves and that’s part of what’s going on with him. He will get more money elsewhere and can go to a team that commits to him that the are all in on trying to win a World Series. The braves FO isn’t acting like a team that was 1 win away from winning the World Series last year. Look at Tampa Bay. Lowest payroll and yet they make trades for key pieces. Draft extremity smart by getting very good quality players. Than they take the time and effort to work on developing them into very good major league players. The braves have had more of their “top prospects” be busts than almost any team I can think of. I could list all of the pitchijg prospects they had about 3-4 years ago and maybe 1-2 of them have panned out TJ be average. The rest have greatly underachieved. The city of Atlanta and it’s huge fan base deserves bette and Atlanta’s young core of good players deserves better. Pitiful existence this organization is right now

I pretty much agree with you Russ. I will say I was quite impressed with Tucker Davidson in his last start. We will see if Ynoa comes back and continues what he was doing. I am a little worried though considering he broke a bone in his pitching hand…. Riley is looking good. Hopefully they at least get a bat to get them through this year. I think everyone knows Ozuna will be suspended probably the rest of the year so that should free up some cash.

I don’t understand why the Braves didn’t give an apportunity to Arano. The bullpen is horrible and can’t get outs, any new arm in the pen is an upgrade

Trade Pache and co. to the DBacks for Marte already….but why do I have a feeling Soroka ends up going to Arizona as well. Hopefully not!

Braves still have like 3 years of control over Soroka even after losing him the rest of this year for cheap. I would be shocked if he was traded.

My dream trade. I love Ketel Marte. One of my fav players to watch in MLB. I’ve been praying the Braves could find a way to go get him and play him in center beside Acuña. Offensively he would be just what the team needed. High contact guy who also has plenty of power and speed. Now AA needs to go get it DONE

Enjoyable to see the Dodgers bandwagon fans help pack Truist park to see the Braves win the series. And Luke Jackson didn’t pitch today. Doesn’t get much better that that for this Braves fan.
