Diamondbacks Place Ketel Marte On Injured List

By Anthony Franco | June 28, 2021 at 5:58pm CDT

The Diamondbacks announced they’ve placed center fielder Ketel Marte on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to June 27, with a left hamstring strain. Righty Humberto Castellanos has been recalled from Triple-A Reno to take his place on the active roster.

Marte left last Tuesday’s game with hamstring tightness. After resting for three days, he attempted to return to action on Saturday. Marte almost immediately aggravated the injury upon his return, pulling up while jogging out a first-inning single. He departed Saturday’s game and was sent for further testing today.

There’s no reason for the Diamondbacks to take any chances with their franchise player. At 22-57, any hope Arizona had of competing this season has long since gone out the window. That’s through no fault of Marte, who has a fantastic .370/.419/.556 line through 148 plate appearances.

Marte’s performance and the D-Backs place in the standings has led to some speculation he’d be a potential midseason trade candidate. That never seemed especially likely, though. Marte is under affordable team control through 2024, and Diamondbacks GM Mike Hazen has pushed back against the notion the team needs to undergo a full-scale rebuild. Marte’s trip to the IL only seems to reduce the possibility he changes uniforms this summer.

Hey get better Marte! I got you being traded to the Yankees at the trading deadline.

The Yankees don’t have enough talent on their entire roster to get Marte. The Dbacks don’t need any slow footed always hurt outfielders, or pitchers that can’t throw without stickum.

@Yep it is- you sound so salty. The Yankees got plenty of what the Diamondbacks want. Arizona isn’t getting Dominguez, Garcia, Schmidty, Medina, or Peraza. Shortstop Prospects like Anthony Volpe/Jason Smith would definitely interest the D-Backs. And pitching prospects Luis Gil and Alexander Vizcaino could likely get a trade done.

Yankee-4-Life Not salty at all. Yankee fan thinks everyone is available to them for little to nothing at all most of the time. Yankee prospects are over-hyped in NY and the rest of the baseball world doesn’t value them like Yankee Fans do. Playing in a large market with plenty of media doesn’t make a prospect good. I can’t think of combined 2 the last 10 years I would trade straight up for Marte, and please don’t bring up 4 game in a row Aaron Judge.

@DarkSide830- no it wouldn’t. Try Frazier/Andujar and Abreu/Nelson not much more then that. Besides isn’t Marte hurt right now? The Yankees might turn their attention to Adam Frazier on the Pirates. Whoever will be cheaper. Dominguez isn’t going to be traded and neither will Deivi or Schmidty.

@ Yankee-4-Life75 I don’t think you understand that it takes two teams to make a deal. Why in the whole world would the diamondbacks trade away a very talented player in marte for Clint Frazier who right now can’t hit for crap and Miguel andjuar who hasn’t hit for 2 years

Yank 4 life Marte is going to the best outfielder available and he is controlled through 2024 with affordable team options. It may not take Jasson and Devei but it’s going to take at least one of them plus to get Marte.

Honestly Yank 4 life your trade proposal is laughable. Hey Arizona take all of our failed players and give us one of your best players and assets I guess you could ask but you would be laughed off the phone.

You’re EXTREMELY over valuing your prospects and extremely undervaluing Marte. “They’re not getting any of the top 5” and this nonsense notion Andujar or Frazier have any trade value needs to stop. You don’t get talent for free lol

The Braves!? Lmfao! That makes no sense. Braves are done, under 500 and lost Acuna! Sellers at the deadline. They should trade Freeman, give him a shot to chase a ring, with the understanding he’ll be resigned in the off-season. And Dbacks aren’t trading Marte while he’s injured and his value is low

Just a thought, but is there a relationship between the high increase in injuries over 2019 and the Covid vaccine? A possible unidentified side effect?

It’s possible, but there’s a much larger, and already scientifically-verified link between getting Covid and reduced ability to play baseball (see Eduardo Rodriguez, Yoan Moncada, and Freddie Freeman, to name a few)

I’m 68, and I haven’t been able to throw a fastball 100mph since I got the vaccine. Must be a correlation.

they didnt care so they signed the guy who nearly won a triple crown last year to a big deal.

Yes, that 60 game worth of triple crown production negates his inferior career production.

Now our man is in jail and the Braves trying to figure out what went wrong. I solved that case a while ago. My only option is to wait patiently for AA to be gone.

but it does sadden me that you brought up last season (like most people). Probably the most success the Braves will have in the next 5 years…beating the Reds and Marlins to finally break NLDS curse. Then collapsing against the Dodgers to continue a different curse.

This is why I never buy into the “there is always next season” BS. The Braves (like the delusional fans) think they will be fine in 2021 because they were one gm away from WS.

Matte is a nervous wreck and will end up in a booby hatch one day. Let somebody else worry about him. Trade him for a new infield. He will bring a ton in exchange.
