The Indians are signing Zack Godley to a minor league contract, reports MLBTR’s Steve Adams (Twitter link). The veteran righty elected free agency after being designated for assignment by the Brewers last week.
Godley made a pair of appearances for Milwaukee this season, working a combined 3 1/3 innings of seven-run ball. He was far better with the Brewers’ Triple-A affiliate in Nashville, where he pitched to a 2.40 ERA with a strong 28.6% strikeout rate across six appearances (five starts). He has the third-lowest ERA and thirteenth-highest strikeout percentage among the 94 Triple-A hurlers with at least 30 innings pitched this season.
A one-time solid mid-rotation starter with the Diamondbacks, Godley hasn’t found much success at the major league level over the past three years. Nevertheless, it’s easy to see the appeal for an Indians club that is particularly short-handed in the rotation at the moment. Shane Bieber, Zach Plesac and Aaron Civale are all on the injured list. That’s left the Indians with an unproven starting staff of Cal Quantrill, Sam Hentges, Eli Morgan, J.C. Mejia and Logan Allen.
Despite the injuries, Cleveland remains in the thick of the AL Central mix. The Indians trail the division-leading White Sox by two and a half games. In addition to Godley, Cleveland added veteran righty Brad Peacock on a minor league deal last week, and Plesac is getting closer to returning. The 26-year-old is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Akron tomorrow, Zack Meisel of the Athletic was among those to note.

NOOOOOO

i mean, they kinda just need innings at this point

No matter how big a splash fans want to mark, you still have to field a team. That’s all this move is. A guy who can throw the ball.

I figured the Tribe would go out and get a SP this week, and my expectations weren’t exactly high, but this is a disappointment. Been a while since Godley has been effective. They’ll probably just muddle through with him until Plesac comes off the IL, so I’m thinking 2 starts, and then it’s back to the dumpster for Godley.

It is a minor league deal so there is absolutely no harm. If they can straighten him out, great. If not, no harm done. I never can understand why people get upset with minor league signings.
layventsky
Unless they’re that concerned with the minor league team’s ability to win games. But that’s not the point of the farm system.

Well if you have paid any attention to the team you might know the indians have had pitching injuries in rhe minors plus all the call ups. They need to eat innings at several levels

The problem is that this is Cleveland, so this will probably be their big mid-season acquisition.

Godley isn’t getting on the major league team. He’s there because Columbus is down 3 starters who have been called up, plus Scott Moss who is also hurt. Theyve been running multiple bullpen games every week. They just need innings thrown.

Chesterbridge – Yeah, it is clear to see the stress put on the Indians pitching staff but you kinda forget about the AAA staff.. I am surprised they haven’t called Hillman up to AAA yet. Great to get some depth arms like Peacock and Godley to help take some of that workload.

Getting a SP takes a some time and trade bait…..we have been losing players left and right so maybe they are working on something but need more time

What happened to the Anibal Sanchez rumors? Why is no one signing him even though there were reports weeks ago suggesting that he’d be signed quickly after his showcase?
Rsox
He’s pitching for Team Venezuela

Well, they need some bodies to pitch at Columbus.

i hope that’s all it is

These guys are finding work due to the record number of injuries. This was somewhat predicted before the season started due to the 60 game season in 2020. Also have to believe the number of throwers vs pitchers has something to do with the pitchers injuries. Are any of the notable soft tossers on the DL with TJS? Grip or lack of grip causing some of this stuff? The number of hamstring injuries is inexcusable. Got to believe could be much lower with hydration and proper training/preparation.

A God-ly signing.

I can see the rotation like this: 1. Plesac 2. Peacock 3. Quantrill 4. Godley 5. Mejia

Thank you Indians, I thought the mets was sure to sign him.

Good depth signing. There’s really no down side to this move.
