East Notes: Turner, Familia, Nimmo, Sale, Moreno

By Mark Polishuk | June 30, 2021 at 10:16pm CDT

It was a banner day for Trea Turner, as the Nationals shortstop celebrated his 28th birthday and tied a Major League record with his third career cycle.  Turner joins Adrian Beltre, Babe Herman, Bob Meusel, and Long John Reilly as the only players since 1890 with three cycles on their resume, putting Turner in good position to claim sole possession of the record before his career is over.

Unfortunately, the achievement wasn’t without some pain for Turner, as he jammed his left middle finger while sliding into third base for the triple that completed the cycle.  Turner told reporters (including Mark Zuckerman of MASNsports.com) that his finger was “pretty sore,” and manager Davey Martinez said Turner is day-to-day for the time being.  Turner’s big day (which also included two stolen bases) only continues what has been a big season for the shortstop, who is now hitting .318/.367/.513 with 14 homers, 18 stolen bases, and an even 50 runs and 100 hits over 341 plate appearances.

Some more injury news from around the NL and AL East divisions…

  • Jeurys Familia is expected to be activated off the 10-day injured list this weekend, Mets manager Luis Rojas told reporters (including Mike Puma of the New York Post).  A right hip impingement sidelined Familia on June 21, so he’ll miss only slightly more than the 10-day minimum.  Despite an ungainly 14.3% walk rate, Familia has a solid 3.63 ERA/4.31 SIERA over 22 1/3 IP, with a 58.5% grounder rate and a lot of soft contact helping offset his lack of control.
  • Brandon Nimmo could also potentially be back on the Mets roster this weekend.  Nimmo hasn’t played since May 2 due to what was initially called a left index finger contusion, then re-diagnosed as a potential nerve problem, and then as a small ligament tear.  This confusion led to a couple of stops and starts in Nimmo’s rehab, and an initial thought that he would be activated off the IL yesterday was held off since the team wanted him to get a bit more prep work in the minors.  Given all the setbacks, it probably shouldn’t be considered a sure deal for Nimmo until he is actually back at Citi Field, but things look promising for the outfielder.
  • Chris Sale threw live batting practice today at Fenway Park, tossing two simulated innings and reaching the 94-95mph threshold with his fastball, Red Sox manager Alex Cora told The Boston Globe’s Julian McWilliams and other reporters.  Sale is slated for another live BP session at the team’s Spring Training facility this weekend, and a rehab assignment could be the next step for the left-hander.  Sale underwent Tommy John surgery in March 2020 and has been projected to return by late July or early August, so he certainly seems to be on track with that timetable.  The Red Sox are leading the AL East despite some struggles within the rotation, and those issues could be greatly mitigated by a Sale who is healthy and anywhere close to his past superstar form.
  • The Blue Jays’ injury woes have extended to the minors, as GM Ross Atkins said that star catching prospect Gabriel Moreno suffered a “minor fracture” of his thumb after being hit by a pitch.  Atkins told Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith and other reporters that Moreno will “most likely” miss several weeks, and surgery hasn’t been ruled out.  Moreno has a whopping .373/.441/.651 slash line and eight homers in 145 PA at Double-A New Hampshire this season, and Baseball America ranks the catcher 32nd on their top-100 prospect list.  While this injury certainly hampers Moreno’s trade value, his development had seemingly made him more of a cornerstone piece for the Jays than a potential trade chip as Toronto approaches the deadline.  Any of Danny Jansen, Alejandro Kirk, Reese McGuire, or Riley Adams could be more likely than Moreno to be dealt as the Jays look for upgrades on the trade market.

The more time goes in the more it seems like Jansen or kirk is the guy going to traded, at least in a package for something bigger.

      Jansen has no trade value.

Trading Kirk would leave them thin for this year in major league depth. only guy they could move now would be Adams.

the science is clear that sliding into 3rd carries a greater risk of a career threatening contusion (or boo boo) than rolling dice to determine number of bases, then placing a ghost runner there. Atlantic League at the behest of MLB cash is running labs on this next summer – looks like it could knock 42 seconds off every game, less the additional 30 second beer or allyship message = net 12 seconds saved.

Another method that analytics leans toward is, batter seeks sufficient launch angle against pitcher who is smarter than box of rocks (iqWAR+ > zero) and inevitably returns to dugout without having to run anywhere, or slide.

Pure guess is that he will be a good to very good pitcher for about two more years, then above-average for one year. The 4th year is a team option at $20M. Depending on the next CBA, that could be a decent number.

JB – Pure guess? You aren’t certain yet you are very specific. Can you tell us how many more good pitches he has left in his arm? With your precision you must know and I thought I’d write Sale and let him know!!

Sale’s age suggests he has at least 5 more years based on how well Verlander and Scherzer (peers of his) have done after TJ surgery. That’s how you frame an opinion so there is at least acknowledged logic behind the statement. It’s great that you have gut feelings but for anyone to care about them you need to provide WHY you believe the absurd things you write!!

        SJKinMD – Outstanding point!!

So many have criticized DD’s deal with Sale because they don’t comprehend his greatness. Two straight all-star starts and they choose to point out that his second halves aren’t as unworldly as his first halves. Most people count what a player does for the year unless they are trying to unfairly judge him. His numbers speak for themselves as do the decisions by DD. Everyone hated the Eovaldi deal, now that he’s an all-star does $17M seem like too much money? DD paid him on his skill and his health has been his only downside and NOBODY predicts health accurately all the time.

Heck, 5 all-stars all from the DD 2018 World Championship team and none from Bloom says volumes about the effectiveness of the new GM. The team’s greatness this year is all about DD picking studs and paying them to win championships. How’s Mookie doing? An all-star yet again. Verdugo once again not an all-star. What about all the great farm guys traded by DD are there any in the all-star game? NOPE. Not Moncada, not ANY!! Would Sale be there if healthy? History shows he would be.

So when people brag about what a great job Bloom is doing, rest assured the winning is coming from DD not Bloom. The stars are all from DD not Bloom. The current and future success will be from DD not Bloom for many years to come!! Meanwhile, guys that Bloom pissed away like Betts, Price, Benny and even JBJ will continue to outshine the utility guys Bloom has acquired!!

Ownership has done it before so if the Red Sox win a ring it’s definitely time to fire Bloom!!! They did it to the best GM they ever had, it makes sense they do it for the worst GM they have every had!!

Check out The Athletic article. There may actually be legit criminal charges here. He allegedly hit and sexually assaulted a woman after choking her to the point of unconsciousness. She allegedly had bruises all over and possible skull fractures. And they may have him admitting it in a phone or text conversation.

Even if the woman asked to be choked out and hit in the face hard, Bauer is a complete idiot for engaging in such activities. Nothing good could come from this and as a successful businessman, he should have known better than to get involved in this situation and take it this far. Even if he avoids criminal charges, he looks like a complete idiot for willingly participating in something so dangerous and demeaning. He may end up getting suspended by MLB even if no charges are eventually filed. #Baueroutage

If what his attorney says is true, it’s not an open and shut case. He claims to have messages showing what she requested, and that she stayed the night both times. What I don’t understand is after the first time, why did she continue the relationship and drive back to his place for a second time? I agree that requested or not, his actions were incomprehensible. Let’s wait and see what the evidence provides.

He shouldn’t be suspended unless the police arrest him. The dude is crazy, I have no idea how he associates himself with someone like that, But the freedom to have whatever type of s*x you want is what the LBQTIXYZ is all about.

A temporary order of protection, which she got, is different and easier to get than an order of protection. It means little, but temporary orders are generally given without intensive scrutiny. A lawyer doesn’t even need to be present.

Your prayers are a compassionate action but its highly likely she will find a new companion (if she hasn’t already) who seeks similar behavior because that’s her passion.

It’s easy to assume and to be judgmental of Bauer if you would never do what they did but since all the facts haven’t been documented publicly its premature to conclude any wrong doing on Bauer’s part whether you would do that type of activity or not. Facts need to determine guilt not opinion!.

Many people preach about tolerance and are quick to shout systemic racism, male dominance in society and other diversity based comments but everyone who does that needs to extend the concept to things that aren’t part of their passion issue. Diversity is not just about skin color. It’s about lifestyles and behavior too.

You don’t have to condone someone with green or purple hair you simply have to accept their right to it. The same is true about personal activities conducted by consenting adults. Until she proves that the actions were not consensual, this is just another diversity issue being judged by the masses because it’s not something they believe in. You can’t straddle the fence with regard to diversity. Either you believe everyone should be tolerant of people that are different or you don’t. It’s an all encompassing concept.

Bodily harm seems to trigger people to conclude this was against the law but if they agreed to it, it wasn’t. Picture your best friend saying to you go ahead and hit me and you saying no I’ll hurt you and he says come on I can take it and you hit him and he ends up in the hospital because he was wrong and he couldn’t take it. Are you guilty of a crime for doing what your friend asked? Not if it complied with his wishes. Was it stupid? Incredibly. Who created the problem? The person asking for the punch. If Bauer acted within the boundaries of the agreed upon engagement then both parties are equally stupid for endangering the life of the woman. If he acted outside the agreed upon parameters then the woman will clearly win in criminal court, civil court and the court of public opinion.

Is this an unusual situation for an athlete, public figure or religious leader? The details may vary but this is not uncommon and often is fixed without it becoming public information. Public figures live with a double edged sword. They are targets for people looking to gain from their notoriety on the one hand, and they often feel they are above the law and do things expecting not to be punished on the other hand. Until the facts are known, we don’t know which side of the sword Bauer is associated with. We just know that the public frowns on this behavior in general yet a portion of society condones this type of behavior just like other choices related to sexuality and gender.

So which actions are fairly deemed taboo when diversity and acceptance are the words of the day? I would think all actions that are legal but that’s just one person’s opinion.

With all the training athletes go through with respect to public behavior, I find it irresponsible of Bauer to have taken these actions without a witness to the agreement and the activity. This is yet another reminder of the many poor choices made by public personas over time. So many public figures have been embarrassed including great basketball players like Jordan, Magic and Kobe to Bill Clinton and other high ranking public officials. Bauer is simply the latest in a very long line of poor choices. I hope for his sake that he did act within the parameters of the agreement but either way his reputation will be tarnished for the immediate future. Time will tell as to whether he can recover from these actions in the court of public opinion.

You are oversimplifying it. Does the accused have text messages from the victim saying ‘I want you to smack me in the back of the head as hard as you can’?

Yea – that makes it ok,. Sorry. NOT. Let me rephrase it in even more simple terms for you: The victim has further brain damage because she asked to be ‘smacked in the head’. and beaten unconscious. The accused graciously complied. . Well in that case the accused is exonerated. Makes sense…

        • Cosmo2

JoeBrady: in general a request for an illegal act doesn’t protect the perpetrator. If a person requests you assault them in a way that leads to injury, that can be prosecuted. Point is, at some point you have the responsibility to say, “no, I will not injure you upon request.” That being said, none of us really know what the exact situation was yet; judgement is best deferred.

        • LetGoOfMyLeg

Hey, the guy in Texas with a head in his freezer got off, so anything is possible. That being said, it’s very stupid and risky, even if consensual. If you have watched any of these sports you mention you will see that there is/are referee(s) enforcing what is legal and what is not. Unfortunately for this young victim, there were no referees present.

        • GASoxFan

@joe – with the sporting references you also have contracts, people acknowledged their rights and ability to have counsel, are evaluated to some extent for their mental capacities and diseases, injury protection protocols, and as mentioned, 3rd parties monitoring for safety should anything get out of hand.

Regardless, a pillar of the code of law, at least in the US, is that you cannot consent to an illegal act.

The principal of assault is a threat of a harmful or offensive act upon one’s person (loosely defined to extend to include objects in close contact with the person such as a plate you hold.)

Battery is defined as the actual contact.

Now if players are understood their limits of what they consider offensive, and, an understanding of what is a possible accidental outcome that’s one thing.

Even rough intercourse, asking to be hit about the head does not imply fracture my skull. There is common sense as to the strength you would expect, and, a skull fracture requires some pretty serious force. It’s not like getting a leg trapped or an awkward angle on the gangly human physique resulting in accidental injury.

But, as they say, we shall see.

        • KD17

LetGoOfMyLeg – Young victim? Bauer or the girl? Was there already a court case that I missed? What if she is a young perpetrator who clearly got what she asked for? Does that change your verdict? Are you aware of facts the rest of us are not privy to?

Clearly, you don’t believe in violent acts and you don’t understand an entire world of unusual behavior between consenting adults. The rest of the world accepts you and your belief systems. How about opening your mind and allowing others to follow their own belief systems and behave as they deem appropriate as long as it’s not against the law?

Next, MANY fighters have died in the ring with a referee in a sport that condones violence. It’s not against the law. Referees don’t guarantee safety they promote it. Most importantly, you don’t have enough facts to definitively say that there was no referee. Maybe there was a third party and the information has yet to come out during discovery.

Don’t jump the gun. Let the facts be determined and presented then draw your conclusions.

        • KD17

GASoxFan – Nice clarification on the concepts. Isn’t there also a need to prove the actions which caused the fracture ACTUALLY happened during the time spent with Bauer? Without the facts, everyone can jump to whatever conclusions they want to jump to but that doesn’t make any of them correct.

Think about means and motive. What if the person got mugged on the way home from the latest encounter with Bauer and her skull was fractured during that encounter not Bauer’s? She goes to the hospital tells a story on purpose so she can make money from a rich baseball player or simply can’t remember anything after the mugging so her last memory is her time with Bauer? Does that exonerate Bauer in your mind?
I’m not suggesting that happened, I’m stating that we don’t know what happened yet and there is a process in place to discover all the evidence and present it to decision makers who will render a verdict.

That’s why concluding ANYTHING about this situation is true is unfair to both parties. Forensic evidence needs to show that it was something Bauer did that created the injuries. There needs to be more than circumstantial evidence to conclude that Bauer is at fault. That’s why it’s too early to be voicing strong beliefs against Bauer. The strong beliefs can be voiced in general against violent acts but it’s unfair to Bauer to state that he did it until it’s proven to be fact.

I take no issue with Bauer haters. I take no issue with people who detest violence against women. I simply think facts must exist before conclusions can be drawn with respect to guilt or innocence.

Yes, Happy Bobby Bonilla Day! He’s one lucky individual. He gets paid by NY to be able to fish on his yacht off the coasts of Puerto Rico and Miami…where he get’s free everything just by showing his championship ring from the 1997 World Champion Marlins.

Rumor has it that he and Pat Riley park their yachts next to each other so they can share memories on how they left NY and ended up in better situations in Miami.

Rumor also has it that Bobby Bonilla jokingly says to Pat, “Go ahead….make your move.” Pat responds, “I did. I faxed it in from my yacht.”

Fans on a Mets’ site were predicting this idiocy was coming today. Peons don’t get that deferring money is a good business tactic; the lol Mets narrative is only parroted by naive trolls. Unoriginal and boring.

Are those the same Mets fans that were knocking the Marlins for trading Corey Dickerson and Adam Cimber….when Jesus Sanchez is being given the opportunity to play everyday in LF and Cimber has been part of the problem with the Marlins bullpen?

The marlins are just a bad organization. Everything they do back fires. Who cares that Sanzhez is getting more at bats. All your doing is giving a scrub more at bats lol.

Nope. Not at all. Never read anything like that. More of an analytics crowd, very little childish bashing of other teams.

          @MetsFan22

Yeah, the Marlins are the franchise that has everything backfire.

What day is today in Mets history?

So much irony in @MetsFan22 aka “Captain Backfire” and the believer of Mets Hyperbole saying this.

See above. It’s like @MetsFan22 knows when he needs to appear…like sitcom cues.

Heh yea. There’s some Marlin bashing here, on cue. But not all fans are like that. There’s another site I go to where you’d never see that sort of thing. To each their own I guess. Personally my support for the Mets doesn’t interfere with my opinion of the Marlins.

Huh? Maybe I’m a bad fan, but I can barely recall those names. I don’t know a single Mets fan who said that. Now getting rid of Ozuna, Stanton and Yelich…that was stupid.

I wish the Mets would wear Bonilla jerseys to celebrate the day. If you are going to have such a dubiously absurd thing to celebrate you might as well have some fun with it

Trea Turner is easily the most underrated player in the game – not that no one thinks he’s great, but no one has him in their top 5, and he might need to be there.

I dunno about top 5 but he’s a great player. I’d rather have him on the Mets than Lindor.

Sale was hitting 95mph with ease. If he’s able to comeback in early august he would certainly be the best deadline acquisition the Sox (or anyone else) can make

A decent Sale is exactly what Boston needs, it’s starting pitching sucks and will be the reason they lose to Houston in the playoffs. If E-Rod, Sale, and Evoladi have a good second half, this team has a shot at a World Series. It is up to how E-Rod and Sale perform the rest of the pieces are there…..
